Threads like these boggle my mind. Let me put it in terms everyone can understand.

You buy a new car and did not get insurance. You wreck it. You then ask people what your options are?

Get insurance after the fact or return it?

Really?

I don't get why people ask these questions. Lots of options are available to you BEFORE and DURING your purchase. Even AFTER you have case options. You mucked up your phone, suck it up and move on. Learn from the lesson.

Agreed.

Sorry, OP, but you broke it so you should pay for replacing it.

Thanks all again for your suggestions/opinions. After a whole morning of bad mood, I walked to an Apple store after lunch and got a silicon case. It fits surprisingly nicely and I think I'll just be done with it. The scratch is no where to be seen.

To those moral lecturers, there are worse things to do than returning a cosmetically imperfect yet fully functional phone to Apple, who just made $500 on my phone and would have spent very little to recondition it had I returned (if they even allowed me to).

This morning I dropped the new phone on concrete ground and one corner had some fairly deep scratches. The phone seems to work properly otherwise. What are my options if I don't want to live with these scratches? Can I return it? Is it possible to buy applecare+ with these dings? Any advice would be appreciated!

Are you aware that there are cases for sale that aid in the prevention of such damage. Can you return it? I certainly hope not. Man up !!!

They would have allowed you to if you were within your 14-day period and it doesn't really matter because they remanufacture all returned iPhones with a brand new case, screen and battery, even if returned opened but unused.

You can't see the scratches but you and I know that they are present. They will always be present. They'll be a reminder.

How is it any different then buying a new car, driving it off the lot, smashing it up and wondering if the dealership will pay for the repairs.

That's what insurance is for folks.

It never hurts to ask.
I dropped a 5S day three.
It was replaced new box for new box.
The apple employee said it was my lucky day.

For Applecare+ if you pay the $79 replacement cost, you can just ask for a replacement even for just a tiny scratch no questions asked. Is this really true? Seems too generous

IF you pay the $79, there doesn't have to have ANY damage to get a replacement, as long as you want one and are willing to spend the $79 (and burn one of your two incidents).

It is total BS if anyone says they won't. I have literally watched it happen (on a device I wouldn't have, but hey, it's their $79), and also CONFIRMED that information with the store manager right after.

If you have AC+ and $79, you can swap for a cosmetically new device any time during your 2 years/2 incidents. PERIOD.

It would be supremely moronic if they didn't allow it, because all some idiot would have to do is go outside, drop their perfectly good phone, and then go back in to swap.

THEY DON'T CARE. As long as you pay the $79.

It's all the fraud outside of that that's the issue (like adding it AFTER a drop, or trying to convince them there's another issue so you don't pay the $79) that drives up the deductible...

Yeah, because a cell phone and a car are very similar... cost no where near the same, don't have similar functions, laws require car insurance, plethora of body shops to repair damaged cars, unlikely to have a 30-day return policy with a new car, but other than that, I can see your point, great example.

Now you're being unfair. You asked a specific question whereas you received specific answers and your end game is to mock those people?

Oh don't use logic with some of these people here. You'll upset their argument against Apple. :)

I know you didi not want to start a debate but this IS the iPhone forum.

Honestly you dropped your phone and damaged it. You should be responsible for your actions. Is that not correct?

In all fairness, I was asking a question about what options I had. If the only option is to suck it up, I accept it. But some people seemed to have misunderstood my question and started lecturing others. That's a bit uncalled for too.

Wrong. If they had a policy allowing replacement at any time when paying the deductible, the deductible would be priced higher than $79. I am well aware certain Geniuses go against this policy and allow you to replace anyway. But policy is policy.

This is exactly why I bought a dual layer case, before I even get my phone.

I really do not see any option to have the phone replace for dents and scratches. The only option is to make an appointment to the Genius Bar, and walk in and ask how much does it cost to replace with a very sad face, and explain how it happened, be very humble, and just maybe, the genius will feel sympathy, and replace your phone.

Just you know, karma works in its mysterious ways. Don't be surprised when you receive no sympathy when misfortune happens to you.

you should get otter box with zagg shield.

You're obviously referring to me because I'm the only one that was against the advice of you cheating Apple by calling over the phone to hide the scratches. What's uncalled for is you talking about me in the 3rd party as "Some People". You can talk to me up front as I am you. And you started a thread of discussion. Things lead to other things. That's what a discussion is about. Suck it up.

Yep, 2 days after I bought a macbook air I dropped it and there was a huge dent in the screen. Went back to my local apple store and they replaced it with a brand new one for free.

It's not a lack of sympathy, I do feel for you. We've all had moments we wish we could just rewind.

In short it's not Apples (or any manufacturers) responsibility when their user drop or drown their electronics.

Two options come to mind, if you paid via credit card check to see if they offer a replacement warranty (some do), or drop by an Apple store and see what they say, be honest and post your results. You never know.

If they do offer you an OOW replacement get AppleCare+ for it on the spot.

Call apple and add applecare via phone. Say you bought your iphone recently and forgot to buy applecare and was wondering if it could be done over the phone. They'll run a quick diagnostics and get you underway
