Time for some G5 story telling

A non-descript truck pulls up to the back of an unidentified warehouse in Cupertino, CA. 3 Men roll up the back of the van and load 100 black boxes onto the truck. The van races to the highway where it is intercepted by Bill Gates and his fleet of body guards. The M$ Pentium 5 boxes are torn open, the PCs ripped open (because M$ didn't think about thumb-screws) and their insides switched with the 2.5 G5s in the black boxes. The Powermacs with the P5s are placed back in their boxes and sent back to the Apple warehouse.

I read that article about running the Apple Hardware Test and I was wondering, is that test what that "TechTool Deluxe" CD all about? Regardless, I held down the "C" key like the CD told me to and the machine just wouldn't run it. Basically it froze at the Apple logo with a small screen artifact and suddenly I could hear the system fans winding up. But the tools never booted. I had to hold the power button down so I could shut down the machine, wasn't sure what was going on but it was making me nervous.

Anyone have this problem? Or am I just doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Apple Hardware Test (included with your Mac) is different from the TechTool Deluxe CD (included with AppleCare). I suggest you run AHT and choose Extended Test in order to ensure nothing is wrong. As for TechTool Pro, I wouldn't run that just because the loaded OS on the CD is very old that I doubt it could properly run a rev B G5 with liquid cooling.

What better way to pass the time than by telling stories!

Apple's playing with our heads... A friend's dad has had his 30" HD and 2.5 G5 with the 6800 for over a month now. I changed my order the minute the 30" was announced, even before the sales reps could even locate the 6800s in their database. I was called back by so many supervisors trying to fix the problem. HAH!

Anyway, yet another day passes with no shipping annoucements (at least within the the macrumors group).

How about some proposals? A Mac Users' Union. So when Apple doesn't stick to their current wave of "on or before" dates, we all call up Apple and threaten to cancel. Call-Flooding, it's one way to raise awareness. At least a push towards more informed users, e.g. Apple must have known before 7/29 that the 7/30 date wasn't going to hold. It's not spamming, it's alerting them to our cause, and the need for action on their part to keep to their agreements.

Well, I just got off the phone with MacConnection and was given a status update of my order. It has now slipped to 9/17.

That's now a month away.

I am ready to buy the first one I see whether I pay the sales tax or not. Reading all these headlines on Macsurfer.com about more shortages due to IBM's continuing problems doesn't help either.

"For anyone that wants it stock and no student discount.
MacMall has 337 orders and 350 in stock! They are getting another order on the 20th and they will try to get you to wait for that shipment. Tell them you will get it from someone else and you should get one."

goodnight. Someone has to keep this forum alive, god forbid it should go more than 5 hours without an update.

I have one on order with MacMall and just called them. According to the guy I spoke with, they have not received their big shipment yet. Where did you get this info? Did they actually ship you one?

The card we've been waiting for...

Just found a nice image of the 6800 in a tech PDF about the Cinema Displays.

I don't know why nobody has thought of this before, but why not outfit FedEx trucks and the like with massive loudspeakers that play a catchy tune, such as the number one downloaded song on the iTunes music store? That way, anxious macheads around the globe would know from a mile away that their G5s were arriving on that wonderful white truck. They would jump up from their worn computer chairs and charge into the streets like a pack of ravenous children, armed to the teeth with digital cameras. The FedEx man would cruise nervously down the streets, ready to fend off over-zealous mac paparazzi with his electronic signature box, while onlookers would peer from a safe distance through their living room windows. Whenever the truck stopped, it would be promptly ambushed by a wave of eager macfiends. Having safely stashed their digital cameras in their pockets, they would clamber around the back of the truck, biting and kicking to get closer. There would be a short pause of anticipation before the back hatch of the truck rolled up, the FedEx guy cautiously holding his signature box doo-dad at arms-length in a gesture of peace. After reading from a list of names, the respective G5s would be handed to their lucky owners, who would snatch them up like foot rations and run home, laughing maniacally the whole way. The FedEx man would then back slowly away from the remaining unlucky ones who did not recieve a computer, before hastily leaping into his seat and throwing the truck into gear. The angry mob would slowly disperse and wearily jog home to their computers to view the new benchmarks uploaded by the proud fathers and mothers of the new G5. As darkness would fall, the only sounds heard would be the faint whispers echoing throught the streets around the world; "Just two more days...two more days..."

all tnx 2 U

HEY, long time reader, first time writer. WOW, what a ride.
i have been acting as a viewer and reading and refreshing this forum every 15 minutes in my spare time. i guess it made me feel better to see im not alone in this agony. i ordered the dual 2.5 with macmall + 2 screens + 3gb +wd 10,000 drive + 9800XT, about a month ago, needed it ASAP for a project due end of september. READ on this forum yesterday that the Tyson corner store had them in stock. called my aunt in MD, and 2 hours later... it is on its way here. be here by Thursday. i got the computer with what ever it came with, i will complete the rest with mac mall, give them at least that business. i know OFFICIALLY, that teksereve should have some by tomorrow, but VERY few, so if you are in NY, hurry there. the apple store in SOHO will not have them at least until the end of the month. if i am not mistaken TEKSERVE also has some 9800XT's but im not sure, will know tomorrow. i hope you get your machine fast and may it be free of trouble (mine too). i will run a hardware test on mine when it arrives, and shall report. later.

Found one in Walnut Creek!

There's a lot of rumors and heresay out there about resellers. My patience gave out. I called every store in the San Francisco Bay area this evening and only one store out of about 5 had a shipment of 5 units come into today. Other stores gave me this 3-5 week response. I jumped into the car and snagged the last one in Walnut Creek. Anyway this is what the sales guy said though earlier I was told there were only 2 units. I don't know what's the real scenario.

The box looked like it had seen some heavy transit. The tape was popped on one side but it was sealed everywhere else. Corners were crunched, graphics scarred, and there was even a hole in one side. When I bitched about that I was told this was the last one, did I want it or not. Spending $3K ain't what it used to be........

Thankfully, all appears well inside the box. I didn't have the foresight to get the appropriate firewire cable to migrate from my DP500 G4 so that will happen tomorrow. Its 10 PM here and haven't had any dinner yet. I'll at least plug it in and run AHT so I can sleep better.

If I bought from a reseller I'd have saved sales tax but also paid shipping. Two day was about $70 from MacConnection. Nevertheless, I lost the 1GB RAM bundle. I also would have the added pain of watching the tracking info "once" they got stock and that can be a time standing still experience.

Its been a long wait and I feel for all of you still waiting. I was slowly going postal. May you get yours soon. I have a feeling that in a couple of days they'll be everywhere. That's usually my kharma.

:)

...there will be a container ship...

The "containership stuck in a traffic jam" joke came up in the Atari days and came to my mind when I read your post.
Maybe I'm just getting too pessimistic and sarcastic over the waiting anyway.
I'm very curious if they really manage to make the 8/20 date, I'm loosing hope though with every day of silence.

cheers.

Engineers aren't people people

Earlier, I gave Apple a call. The salesguy I talked to used to be an engineer at Apple, and when asked if I could speak to someone who would know something about the 6800 cards, he replied, "I don't know anyone who would know, but even if I did, I couldn't give you their number. Engineers don't talk to people."

I couldn't help from being reminded of Officespace and the interview that ended with, "God damnit, Can't you see I'm a people person!"

STATS "report" 8-17 late night edition

Once again another whisper quiet day from those waiting "on or before" Aug 20 for a 2.5 to ship.

My spreadsheet has the latest news clips on shipments. Is your order technically a "pre-order" if the apple store down the street gets it before someone who ordered on the day of product announcement?

2 orders scheduled before 8-20 have slipped into September today. I've labeled them in red with white letters and attached comments. In the pie, the yellow slice is smaller, and the blue slice is bigger while the red remains at 55 orders.

So.....with shipments actually going out to all but those waiting for 8-20 here, its crunch time with us needing an average of 18 shipping announcements per day INCLUDING Friday. Thats just to ship the 55 "on or before" Aug 20 in this database.

Here's to a very exciting next 3 days!!

For some reason I can seeit now in my head, Steve Jobs in a Santa outfit, at bride on a barge coming into port on Friday, spreading the PowerMac cheer that we all so yearn. Bill Gates will be swabbing the Poop Deck mind you. Just wait, the day will be saved and all (or at least some) of us will be sane once again!

You know, it's funny, I DID talk to an apple engineer through 1800MYAPPLE the day the 6800 was released.

"Well the engineers aren't good at dealing with customers"

..

"I've got people skills! I am good at dealing with people! What the hell is wrong with you people!?"

MacMall Shipping!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I got my Fedex tracking info from MacMall today and mine will arrive on 8/19. I ordered on 7/22.

When I want something that is constrained, hard to get, etc, I call Keith. See this post:
https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=978040#post978040

This guy gets results. I do not ask how he does it but I always see results! I have been referring my clients to him and they are thrilled.

BTW, mine is a stock unit. I will add options once it is here.

-Roger

So let me get this right. You ordered from MacMall on 7/22 and got your shipment notification today? Less than a month after you ordered?

What's up with that? is MacMall sending out in reverse order as well? (just like Apple???) Or have MacMall already caught up with their backorders??????

damn, this is getting weirder by the day

Yes, it will work out to less than a month. Good thing as I really need it for work.

Apparently they got a good size batch in and are shipping them from the Memphis warehouse. They also put in huge orders when announced...

Apple can't sell DP 2.5's in its retail stores until it also gives them to macmall/connection/etc.

Apple is already facing law suits over their preferential treatment towards its apple retail stores, they can't afford more.

I'd recommend taking advantage of this if you can, no point in us all suffering.

Personally, if I had to listen to whatever horrid song is #1 on iTMS right now I'd have to get my gun and jack the driver's radio.
