I just called MacConnection about my order. The girl quoted me about the middle of September.

I mentioned that I heard someone was to get it in a couple of days. She said that they had received about 6 so far - I am number 40...

She also indicated that they had been having many problems with the new liquid cool - hopefully they will get this all straightened out before I receive my machine.

Hmmm...I know that they provide me with the free 1GB RAM upgrade (probably some really cheap brand)...I wonder if their RAM is having problems with the G5. I think MacConnection does the installation themselves, and I assume that they also test it first before shipping it out. If there is some kind of problem, then to keep their promise, they will have to install some more respectable brand...or delay shipment... I don't know. A little scared now.... But I won't be super happy until they actually ship it...because, all this is meaningless until I get the actual shipping notice. :(

CPU Monitor has been put into the Activity Monitor in 10.3.

Thanks. I haven't used 10.3 before, was still on 10.2.8 and not spending the money to upgrade knowing this was coming with it.

Hey invaLPsion! Thanks for posting those stats. I'm 8 hours away from being able to go home and play with my new toy. Can't wait. These next few hours are going to feel like days.

I was wondering if you've experienced any of the ripple while scrolling or fan reving problems that G5_medic has pointed out.

No ripple problems whatsoever. This must be a good batch, people! :)

It's so great to click an icon on the dock and have it open instantly! :D

Is it better to have your 2.5's processor setting at highest?

UT2K4 Demo: (1280 x 1024, everything maxed) low FPS: 25 High: 70 Avg.: 50s

AAO: (1280 x 1024, everything maxed, insugent camp) low FPS: 22 High: 115! Avg.: 40 - 60

Call of Duty 1.4: (1280 x 1024, everything maxed, single player) There is no command for FPS but I am a pretty good detector. The computer bottoms at about 15 FPS and avgs 25-20.

Warcraft 3: This game is no problem for the dual 2.5. Never dips below 30FPS.

Call of Duty:
/cg_drawfps 1

I think you'll find you guestimate is a bit off. I'm getting 60 ~ 100+ FPS.

/com_maxfps 0

This will remove the frame rate cap to get above 100.

Yay! This is the first i've heard of a CDW order shipping. I ordered from CDW as well (July 9th). Hopefully I'll get a notice sometime soon!

Yay! Mine shipped today! I ordered July 9th order. Its' 2 day shipping so hopefully I'll get it thursday. I'm going camping on friday so if I don't get it thursday, I'll have to wait until Monday to play with it. Oy.

Since I got the 9800XT, I really hope the ripple/revving problem has been figured out by then.

Man, I thought for sure Apple would have mine shipped by today. Everyone who ordered on 6/9/2004 I think has one already except for me.

I've got 2 games and 2GB of memory sitting at home waiting for this machine.

Did I say no ripple problems? I meant to say there are ripple problems. :(

Damn 9600XT...

It seems like that is what is making noise.... It's louder than the fans at times, and randomly kicks while folding... weird...

I strongly suggest that you guys try the included timedemo in Call of Duty:
Get into the console, type timedemo 1, type demo timedemo 1.dm_2 (BTW i think you can only type demo timedemo 1)
The results will be in the console after the demo.

I get 45 FPS average with Dual 1.25 FW800 Radeon 9800 Pro 1280x1024. high Quality

Show us the results! :)

G5 2.5 are NOW on display at Emmeryville, CA

Can you believe that? Not to add any more pain to the people waiting, but I am here right now at the Apple Emmeryville store just to check what I can get for my G5. I see so many vacant computers on display so I start to examine one with a 23" Alu display. For the sake of it I check the specs only to be surprised to find that it shows I'm using a 2.5 G5. Whoa!

Isn't that stupid? There are so many people waiting for theirs to be filled and the demand is clearly greater than the supply. So why the decision to use one for display? To generate more demand, of course but if you can't fill the present demand. Also I know each store is entitled to a supply, but if someone wants to walk in here now and buy one how can he if the only one remaining is the one they just opened for display.

Anyway, just a thought. And by the way the display here is even more pink than mine at home. They didn't even bother to calibrate it and it's so obviously off-color already.

This is starting to look like Apple treats their most loyal customers (those that pre order new machines) very very very badly........not good Apple, get me my machine NOW!

ahead of schedule? where have you been :D
no, seriously, when did you order?

Well, I guess it is behind schedule because I was originally told middle of July. So, it did slip. It's just nice when you're expecting to have to wait for another week and then have it ship that day.

In the long run though, I've been waiting for almost a year. Ah, it'll be nice to have it at home and not make my powerbook cry when I have 20 photoshop documents open.

edit: I didn't answer your question. I ordered 6/21.

Got it!!

My computer arrived today. Like an idiot, I installed my additional memory wrong... when in doubt, read the manual.

I ran Apple Hardware Test... Oh my god! The damned thing sounded like a jet engine... then when I though it couldn't get louder, another, whining, higher pitch fan kicked in! I was freaking! But when I restarted and ran the system, it sounded fine.

Everything tested good and I transferred all my data fine. I didn't transfer applications. I wanted to install them fresh.

I have gotten on Safari and didn't notice any scrolling ripples or anomalies. And the fans haven't revved up since the AHT.

Over all it is fast! but I am still in the process of installing all my software. I really want to "render" a FCP project I have been working on. I will be able to tell then.

Hang in there guys! I am still checking to see how you all are faring in this madness.

Got mine today

My G5 did arrive today, I am typing on it. Just turned it on. No hardware test quite yet.

Good Luck to all of you who are still waiting.

Maybe they'll get fixed with a driver update?

I've heard that Apple treats their bricks-and-mortar stores just like any other store or and other customer. So, if the Apple Store in Tyson's Corner orders 100 G5s right before I order mine, their order is processed first. That would explain the G5s showing up in stores while pre-orders are still waiting (since I'm sure the stores pre-ordered units as well).

It doesn't make it any less painful, but at least it might be some sort of (admittedly feeble) explanation.

Of course, this does nothing to expain the delays in the non-6800 6/9 orders like brykken's...

1.8DP to 2.5DP drive swap?

I'm posting this in this thread due to the number of new 2.5 owners present, so forgive the semi-off-topic nature.

My 2.5 arrives tomorrow (yeaaaah) and I'm considering the option of just swapping the 160GB drives (from a recent Rev.A dual 1.8) once I verify that the processor passes the HW test and that it isnt DOA, so I'm wondering if anybody here has tried this trick (ie is there any "special" post OSX 10.3.5 stuff on the dual 2.5's for the LCS).

Thanks

As a veteran of the "ripple problem"... It's an ATI thing and I think all ATI cards. Hopefully that means it's a software/driver issue. Apple says it's "within spec" but that's unacceptable. I finally got a 2.0 with a Nvidia and after three rippling G5's (with ATI cards) I was ripple free!

To all you folks waiting for those 2.5 beauts.... the wait makes the gettin' all the sweeter!

Of course. . .I would presume that the full hardware test would indeed run everything eventually at maximum (CPUs, various cooling systems, etc.) for efficacy. Don't sweat it - be cool!

If this is the extent of quirks with the 2.5, then Houston, we have no problem. Here's a quote from a post you may be interested in:

i've got the "G5 Ripple" too. usually about 3 inches from the bottom of the window. some times it's worse than other times. i spoke to an apple tech at the apple store and he said that OS TIGER will totally restructure the way graphics work, and that hopefully it'll fix these issues. anyone know when TIGER is due out?

I have a gut feeling that this will be the end solution to this and any remaining serial problems.
;)
