Best setup for drives?

recursivejon said:
What you do is store the files on your 250GB, but you use the 74GB as a swap or scratch drive. Whenever you're working on anything in any application, it is either loaded into RAM or onto the designated scratch disk. Using a 10,000 RPM disk as a scratch would noticeably improve the application's performance and most likely increase productivity.

I'm sorry, but I'm getting mixed messages from you and solo-act. What is more efficient, to set up your OS on the 10k rpm drive, or use the 10k rpm drive as your scratch disk? It makes sense that whatever is accessing longer drive reads would benefit from the faster drive. Are you recomending putting the OS and all files on the 250 gig drive, and then keeping nothing on the 10k but using it for a scratch disk? Where then should I keep my FCP .mov files?

Thanks for the help guys.

It's "In Process"!!

I called Apple and they said my G5 is "in process", so he said it should ship today or tomorrow!!! Whooeee! (but I'm not getting too excited until I get a tracking #)

FYI: Ordered 6/28 online (USA). Stock except for no modem, and added Final Cut Express for $99.

Hi Everyone

Hi Everyone,

This is my first Post Here. I live in South Florida and the Dual 2.5's are available in stores here. I picked up my Dual 2.5 and I am not happy with the Fan Noise. The Dual 2.0 i previously had was extremely Quiet to the Fact I couldn't even tell if my Mac was on or off.

This new Dual 2.5 Fans start Spinning faster (Very Loud too) when I'm just scrolling through Web Pages or sometimes when I'm just Idling *Fans Just Sped up when I edited this Post*. Forget about doing intensive Rendering, Fans have a field Day. I know the first releases of the New Macs usually have issues. I owned Several Macs since the beginning from the Apple II to the Apple G5. I owned a Dual 1.35 or Dual 1 (Forgot which One) that had the same Fan Issues which Apple issued a Software fix or Recall (Forgot).

Hopefully Apple comes up with a Firmware or Software update that controls the Fans from Keeping on Reving up. Is anyone else experiencing this issue with this new Dual 2.5?

PS the Cooling System is pretty much a Small Radiator from a Car. I thought it was going to be something much cooler.

Mr Mac

Sorry, just posting brief thoughts and not going into detail. Right now I'm just at the start of configuring my drives, but I plan on doing this. Any insight from experts would be helpful.

1. when the 10k drive comes in, decide if I need to run music and video apps on different partitions. If so, partion the 74gig with one for music and one for video, and install only the OS, and the applications.

2. Then I'll wipe the current 160 that came stock and put all my personal multimedia (music, photos, documents) and most frequently accessed business documents and graphics on that on that. Then...

3. I'm looking into putting all my captured audio and video files and projects on a RAID. That raid could be 10K drives in an SATA raid0 which is the best speed for the lowest price, but I have to back up constantly AND transfer only the projects I'm working on back and forth from my firewire storage drives. That can rack up a lot of time in the long run. The other idea is to run 7200 SATA in a raid, but there isn't software right now to run RAID 0+1 which lets you go pretty fast AND have mirrored backups. The other solution for me would be to run 7200's mirrored, but the speed will soon be eclipsed by newer technologies. One of the newer technologies I'm looking at is RAID in ATA drives, but with SCSI controllers -- so I get extremely fast mps out of normal 7200rpm ATA drives, but run in a RAID 3 where do don't lose data if a drive goes down because the raid can rebuild the data onto a new drive when you put it in (parity calculations etc etc -- I just read the stuff don't pretend to be an expert) I don't have the link to the product but its in one of my earlier posts. Problem with that raid is it runs about 3grand, but is long term, saves tons of time because it holds & transferes everything, and it can do 200mps if you want it to. --So....choices choices. Hope that helps.

BTW for those wondering about fans kicking in really brief, then down again. I have a couple konfabulator widgets, one of them is called CPU PORTAL. Every time it spikes and drops really fast, the fans do the same thing the activation point seems like 40% and up. Just an observation, not technical analysis.

If you already had a dual 2.0, why didn't you wait until you could test a 2.5 out? So you could hear the fan noise for yourself, before buying one.

How was I gonna do That, where do you test a Mac in your home or anywhere else besides the Apple Store? When you go to the Apple stores you Really don't hear anything (due to lots of commotion going on in the Store) so I figured with this "New Liquid Cooling System" that there should be even less Fan Noise. But Not. Very Dissapointing. Plus I was caught in the Big Hype of Getting one of these Bad Boys, cause I must always Stay Current. *Fan Revs Up again as I hit submit*

Also I picked up a New 23" HD Cinema Display as well, which I still haven't opened because I'm contiplating wether or not to return it. I am very dissapointed with the New Monitors as well. They Remind me of Cheap Aluminum PC Monitors with Plastic Formica on the Sides. But I picked it up because I sold my 22" Apple Cinema Display on eBay for $1,300.00. But it looks like the guy backed out at the last minute, so I may keep it and save $2k.

ok, maybe the noise is hard to compare, in the shop and at your home, but still. there are plenty of reviews available with people telling it's not quieter than the 2.0, and occasionely the fans turn on. (revving).

Why did you buy a display if it reminds you of cheap aluminium pc monitors? I don't understand, I never bought something I disliked from the beginning, better to save your bucks i'd say, no harm intended though

Cause I thought it would grow on me. *Still Looking at the Box*

Hi and welcome. I don't think (with the description you state) that the fan rev is normal in your case. My G5 is whisper quiet UNLESS I do some editing work or scroll up and down multiple time in a rather long page. In both cases, they will only rev for around 5 seconds and then come back down to being quiet. You said just by replying to the thread your fans kick up already, that should be an indicator of something you should inspect further.

Either you have placed the computer in a not so ideal location that is hot and with no air circulation or you will have to check and run your Hardware Test that came with the computer.

The cooling system looks like a radiator of a car because it was designed/manufactured by a car parts maker - Delphi, which I believe is owned by GM.

Sorry to hear that..

But maybe you suffer from the "just-spend-a-lot-of-money-and-that-hurts"-syndrome..

I had that often in the beginning! (not laughing here! it really exists!)

it's when you just spend a lot of money, the thrill of buying it is over, and you look at a bankaccount minus 5 grand or more.. And you are a bit dissappointed, because you cannot undo this without a good reason.. Then you start looking for tiny reasons to convince yourself that it was a wrong buy, and want to return the stuff..

BTW, how can you return stuff anyway?? Is that a US thing? Here, when you buy stuff, you can only return it when it is broken.. If you bought something, and change your mind, well bad luck!, the store is not gonna give your money back! Box opened or not!, sold is sold!

(there are exceptions if you have a good relationship to the store etc.. etc.)

Is it me, or is it getting awfully quiet on this thread..seams like either everybody is enjoying their new liquid g5, or are waiting for fedex, or are on the phone with apple negotiating for compensation ;)

wassup people! :D

Negotiating for compensation? I called ADC today and the only thing she offered me was to CANCEL the order! To which I said, "I've waited three months, another week shouldn't kill me" I can't believe the order they're shipping these in. I acn't believe it's almost september and no computer!

I have the Computer in the Same exact Spot as the Dual 2gHz. The Fan Revs up for like 5 Seconds then Slows Down to normal. It Periodically Revs up for No Reason as well. It isn't making any rubbing noises its just simply reving up. I bought More Ram Thinking that the Processor was overworking due to the Lack of Ram (512 megs stock) but that didn't Make a Dif. (Got 3.5 Gigs of Ram in there now)

Also Speaking of Ram, I don't Like the Fact that these Places try to Sell you the Same PC Chips of Ram for Higher Prices just cause its going In a Mac. I just Picked up 2 1 Gig Modules for $168 each and 2 512 Meg Modules for $89 each at Coast 2 Coast Memory and they were trying to sell me Mac Ram for $280 for 1 gig. I''ve been buying PC Ram all my Life for Macs and never had issues. So Just for Argument Sake if Anyone needs to buy ram for your Mac G5 go to coast 2 Coast and Order there regular PC-3200 DDR Ram and you will be fine (I tested it already).

I just sent apple a email asking why my computer has been delay twice with no reason other than "there is a high demand for this item". I ordered the afternoon of June ninth! I also inquired about why I wasn't upgraded to free 2-day delivery.

I don't mind the waiting too much, I just wish they would've told us up front that we'd be waiting three months for our computers.

I hope all these delays aren't because Apple is trying to push out iMacs so they can for once, ship computers within reasonable date after announcement.

Nah, I sold My Dual 2.0 on ebay and got what I needed to buy the New Machine. I didn't Splurge out my Bank account, simply sold my Dual 2 right before the dual 2.5 hit the Stores. So there was No Suffering buying it.

Hey I'm still Happy I own the Fastest Mac in the World!!! Noisy or Not.

I also Confirmed with my Friend in NY who said the Apple Stores in NY have the Dual 2.5's in Stock as well. SO why do all the Stores have them and Apple is making customers wait for theirs after Pre-Ordering. Man that Sucks :(

my G5 revs up alot too...but i assume this is quite normal, especially from having read the other posts where people had similar comments. I got the new 23 inch display, and if you can swing it, i would keep it; it looks fantastic.

What exactly is the "ripple effect" that people have experienced with the 9600XT?

Where have people been setting the processor speed to? highest, auto?

Yes, it sucks, but I can understand that they treat them as a regular customer, only this customer (aka apple store) orders about 20 each, or more. But they aren't treating resellers the same, as they don't get the machines as early as the apple stores do.. Not to mention the european resellers.. it'll be 3 months (as in almost 100 days) until I get mine.. my car was built and delivered in 2 months..go figure

sigh..if only there was something we could do about it..

ps : I find it funny that you type so many capitals in your sentences :D

Dust?

Does anyone think that one might be able to deter excess amounts of dust from entering the G5 by attaching dust filters to the front of the machine?

Delphi Automotive used to be owned by GM, but it was spun off as a separate company several years ago. I know because I own the stock.

Hot damn!

I just talked to the little old lady at MacConnection, and she told me the nearest for my Precious to come was... 9/17!!!!

Most stores in Canada and the US will accept returns within 10 or 14 days with the receipt. It's quite common to return something if it doesn't fit, you don't like, you weren't sure what size you needed so you bought one in each size, etc. You should see post-Christmas returns - some stores have checkouts just for returns. There are some exceptions, like you can't return underwear once you wear it, some stores won't accept software once it's been opened, etc.

Believe it or not but using nylons/pantyhose/stockings is one of the best dust collectors/filters around. I have seen them out perform expensive filters. The trick is mounting them obviously, but they shou;d work fine.
