I hear you GeckoHD! - mine is supposed to be on or before the 2nd of August in the UK, which if correct, is not long at all, but the waiting.....

Don't get your hopes up just yet. My order (ordered within first hour of anouncment) was orinally 19/07 was then put back to 3/08 and has just today been put back to 16/08. With Jigsaw in UK.

This sucks.

Ive ordered G5 2.5ghz. x2 250gb drives. 2gb ram. 9800XT card. x2 23" Cinema displays.

Hey GeckoHD - just curious. Given your later ship time and your upgrade already to the 9800XT, have you considered just waiting a few more weeks and coming up with just another $150 to do the 6800 upgrade. Seems like with all your spending, it wouldn't be too much more of a cost, and from the reviews of the 6800 that i've seen, it would be a very significant upgrade.

I wrote my reseller this morning to see whether he's gotten any update - i'm still waiting to hear back. Last word from him was "very late july." I will keep you guys posted with what i hear.

Yeah, although that would put his order even further back in the queue. :)

I know, but what's another few weeks to wait for a computer that you will use for many years.

I'm going crazy waiting for this thing to get here... but if i could afford to get a 6800, i would definitely pony up and wait another month.

here's one of the few performance comparisons for the 6800. Granted its only in one game - doom 3 - it shows a considerable performance improvement over the x800 - which is the latest generation of ATI card.

So if you consider that the 6800 beats the newest ATI card pretty badly, imagine how much better it will be compared to the 9800xt.

I just think that if you're going to spend 300 to upgrade, you might as well spend 450 to get the best you can.

Is the difference between the 9800XT and the 6800 really that significant? - I havent seen any benchmarks between the two - are there any?

i guess there is. but for what? doing alot of FCP & motion? - yes. gaming? i would say yes - but so what? what game do you need to run? doom 3. why wouldn't 9800 do the job well?

this card will drop in price by the time you NEED it.

I never understand the 3d card obsession with mac users. Isn't a true hardcore gamer on pc, where the games actually exist in robust numbers? for us video editors and compositors price is a non-issue. it's part of the deal and 6800 it is. otherwise it feels like overkill

I agree with you. Which is why I'm just getting the stock 9600xt. When that can no longer handle what i throw at it, I'll upgrade for much less money.

For someone who feels they need the power of the 9800xt now, it just seems like you might as well get the 6800. On a $3300 machine, $150 more is not that much. Plus, if you ever fall into some really large pile of cash, you can get yourself one of those 30" displays, and have all the power you need to run it.

At least now we are getting very close to someone posting that "I was just notified that my 2.5 has shipped. Still think that before the month is over some will actually have on on their desk.

i've been waiting for my new g5 since June 9th, when my machine's specs were sent to internal purchasing. This machine is considered a gift from work, a bonus of some sorts. Anyways, my point is I have no idea when I'm suposed to get it  seeing i didn't send in the order, it's comming with the stock video card so I imagine it'll be in one of the first shipments... You should all feel lucky you can look at your estimated shipping date...

Jeremy... waits....

Well I agree really - when I ordered there wasn't the option for the 6800 or else I probably would have gone that little bit further up the scale! - and in truth, had I know it was coming, I probably would have done the same - gone for basic stock card, and upgraded a little later on!, but right now, I need that faster machine, and the idea of changing the order for the first option (with 6800) and still waining another month or 2 is not an particularly appealing! :)

Well I have been waiting since the dawn of time, and only now am I growing impatient... :D

I mailed my reseller today, asked if he could give me a more specific date for my G5, and when my 23" display would arrive.

About the latter he said "tomorrow afternoon", about my G5 he said he didn't received a date from Apple yet, so he is as clueless as we are.. I just don't understand how the resellers and apple communicate, hell, even apple benelux sometimes don't know the simplest things, like that the displays were shipping for example, I called them that day, and they didn't had any clue when they would ship, two hours later, I see a dutch guy posting pictures of his new 20" and 23"ers.

The resellers can't be too happy about that themselves, cause they get the blame from their customers, like me, who has every reason to complain cause they stated our computers would arrive in july, and it looks like it's going to be mid august, if we are lucky.

it looks like there will be some compensation needed if that's the case..

btw : g5 orderd completely stock on june 13th, display ordered july 3rd.

Oh man. I dreamt last night that I actually went to my reseller to pick up my G5. As I held the box in my hand I was so excited. But then I thought : wait a minute they are supposed to arrive on Friday not Monday…
Hehe, even in your dreams you have to wait an extra two days ;)
Besides, everybody has been quoting a ship date of July 30th...Not a receive date of the 30th. :)

Clubmac now says first week in August - which I guess is next week. He said that it wasn't their fault, that Apple keeps pushing the date back.

I guess that someday we'll get our computers...

It's a new marketing ploy by Apple: Here's our product, order now!
Then they show all their investors their very impressive backorder log... ;)

Hmm, vaporware anyone?

You reseller folk will probably get yours in mid-August.

But for us Apple Store folks I'm gonna throw out that our powermacs will ship on or before 7/30 (this week) and arrive sometime early next week. :D

Woo! :D

Since, I have only had my macs ship on time... In the past, when there have been delays and pushbacks, do they really wait till the est ship date to notify buyers?

TIA

My reseller told me on friday of the week befre last, that my Dual 2.5 will be here somewhere between last week of July and 2nd week of August, it is completley standard, except for an extra gig of ram the reseller is putting in, initially the reseller thought they were going to get them in mid June.....i wasnt optimistic about that.........Hurry up

My question exactly.

Yaaaay!

Weeeeeee! :p
I just got off the phone with my contact at ADC (Apple Developer Connection).

She told me late August for my 2.5, even though I'm close to the front of the line!

I'll be in college by then!
