Been too busy playing with my new machine to visit since I posted my first impressions,time flies when you're having fun
Did my first bit of 'serious' multi-tasking today,and this machine can take whatever I've thrown at it easily.I've upgraded from a DP450,and the difference is enormous.I find it very strange that Grebo hasn't noticed much overall improvement,I hope everything's OK with your setup Grebo,or maybe it's just running itself in?
Anyway,hang in there Klaus and all,it's worth the wait!

Dropped off my Dual 2.5 for repair at local Apple Store
Hey all,
Last week my Dual 2.5 G5 that I had for 29 days crapped out. It looks as though the power supply was the culprit.
When I called Apple, they asked me to take it to my local Apple store (which isn't so local because it is 45 minutes away!). I dropped it off today and was sad to learn that the Apple repair/warranty states that Apple can install refurbished parts.
I hope they put in new parts if that's what's needed. This is my first Mac and the experience thus far has been horrible as the breakdown followed serious screwups with my order.
Have any of you ever had your systems repaired by Apple and is there a way to determine if refurbished parts were used in a repair???

I know it's worth the wait, otherwise I would've bailed out a couple months ago, and spend the money on clothes, dvds.. oh, no wait, I did spent a lot of money on clothes and dvds, to soften the wait.. oh well
Refurbished Parts
Hey Photo-Video,
I had an old iMac repaired once before and they asked me if I wanted a refurbished part or a new one. Turned out that if I got a new part it would take like two weeks to get it in. I chose that option because the computer still worked with out it but in your case I don't know what I would do. I would just ask them if they used refurbished parts or not. Good Luck!!!

Got my screen two days ago, and it´s really nice. But It has a magenta tint. Didn´t notice it at first but it got more obvious as I used it a bit.
I did fix it though with the apple calibration tool. But does this mean that it is a bad monitor? Should I send it back? I guess that If I have go at it with a decent calibrator then it will be 100% for color critical work.
Anyway, now just waiting for tha 2.5 G5 to arrive, man this screen is sweeeyt Made my 2x1.4 G4 feel new again!!

Got my screen two days ago, and it´s really nice. But It has a magenta tint. Didn´t notice it at first but it got more obvious as I used it a bit.
I did fix it though with the apple calibration tool. But does this mean that it is a bad monitor? Should I send it back? I guess that If I have go at it with a decent calibrator then it will be 100% for color critical work.

Good idea, but I still like to use eject.menu
You can find it in /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/eject.menu
when you double click it you get a little eject icon for the superdrive up in the menubar. There are some other cool ones in there too ( /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/)

Order cancelled, then reinstated
I just checked my order status again, and noticed that my G5 with 6800 had been cancelled, and a new order placed for it. Everything was exactly the same, and the EST is still 10/15. I think I recall a few weeks ago that others had experienced this, and it meant their computer was being built at a different assembly plant. Has anyone who has already received their G5 had the same thing happen, and did it affect your expected ship time? I know that others have been waiting longer than I have, but the last two and a half months have gone by really slowly.

How many people split off their 6800's and have received computer?
I'm wondering how many people have split off your 6800 card and since received your computer. I'm due to have my dualie shipped next Friday and if it didn't actually ship I was going to demand to have the card split off. I've heard that the offer was only good for a few orders but another poster here mentioned that he got his order split even though the offer wasn't originally extended by Apple. I originally ordered July 27th so it's been over two months.

Congrats on all all those who recieved their G5. Mine is working like a charm. I always like to get under the GUI and look around when I get something new. MAC OS is new to me and I have more questions than answers but it will take time reading and researching.

I dont think anybody has received the apple nvidia 6800 yet. And I dont think it will happen soon. They have big back orders on them. I changed my 6/11 order to include the 6800. Finally caved in on 9/20 and asked them to send the card later (I never got an offer to do this from apple) The G5 shipped 9/25!!
So absolutely try and get them to send it later, it could speed up the process. (And you get a free 9600xt to sell on ebay

Congrats, about your screen. I know there are many magenta/pink reports on the net about these 23" screens. But the pink can be calibrated out. Be sure your color profile stays selected, if you see pink again, then your profile will not be selected (probably because it's not in the right place).
I don't think it's a bad monitor, a bad default color profile maybe.

i called apple germany yesterday, to ask them why i got bumped with my iMac G5, they told me it would ship the same day, and it did. (yeah) But I also aked them what would be smarter...
a) cancel the order (G5 2.5) I made by a reseller here in my small hometown and to reorder the G5 at apple store germany, or
b) stay with my 2 month old order and wait ....
I found out the following:
If I reordered by the apple store it would take about 5 to 6 weeks until I can actually power up my new baby the first time ... what a crap
BUT: All the ( (he said) production errors ) I'm not sure how to translate it ... but I think he meant DOA and bad supply of someting --- so all the errors are over now, and my reseller should recieve the new macs within two weeks ... (sounds reasonable to me or maybe there is just hope)
Anyway ... in general I think apple is harming itself because for example my whole class is asking me if i recieved my Powermac EVERY DAY ... and they are really mad, almost as mad as I am, when I have to abnegate.
I just want my G5 ... that's all

Just my experience of the 9600XT ripple problem others have mentioned.
So far I've not noticed any ripple/scrolling problems at all,neither on web pages or playing games.Quite happy with this card,though I'm still looking forward to getting my 6800 Ultra!

I think the 6800s are not far away. I spoke to Apple yesterday and they said my 6800 would ship Wed 10/6 (ordered 8/8).

The good news is they are shipping from ONE source in the UK, and do not have to go to Holland, wait five days, then ship again.
I am sorry to cast a shadow of doubt on anyone else's expectations regarding the new machines, it's just that I really was expecting a bit more speed-wise, am disappointed with the amount of fan noise (I don't want that thing revving up when I'm recording a vocal with Logic Pro 7!) and I'm suffering a bit of buyer's remorse, which is natural when you've just plunked down over £5K on a hunk of metal - no matter how well-designed it is.
Am going to spend the weekend re-doing the drive strategy to see if that speeds things up a bit, and will wait for the extra speed of the 6800 display card before making my final judgement whether I send it back or not.

The downside to this is we're going to have a difficult time offloading these suckers on eBay if it's a known flaw. Do they work on Windows PCs too? Anybody know?ganders said:Hi all,

I actually don't hope that it this thread will last till post 6800.. that's 1300 posts away! Way too long.. If you told this at the beginning of this thread, I was optimistic. Then the cards would ship in 3 days.. but now, while things are slowing down a bit every day.. the cards might as well never arrive...
