I'm wondering how many people have split off your 6800 card and since received your computer. I'm due to have my dualie shipped next Friday and if it didn't actually ship I was going to demand to have the card split off. I've heard that the offer was only good for a few orders but another poster here mentioned that he got his order split even though the offer wasn't originally extended by Apple. I originally ordered July 27th so it's been over two months.

Tamtam, thanks for the fine spreedsheet. Maybe you could add a coloum for this??

And has anybody received a 6800 card installed?

I have a column for tracking which orders are with "6800" in the config. I Just did a sort and the results of all 6800 orders are as follows:

20 got their G5's
14 orders in transit
20 orders have not shipped.

But I really wanted the 5500th post as well! Oh, wait, no, that was that powermac dual 2.5 that I wanted but don't seem to get my hands on

apoligies accepted ge4-ce :p

I was fighting for post 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500 and lost faith a while in the 4000 post era, missed post 5000 and now really wanted post 5500.. I'm supersticious! For me this means, that I have spent almost 5500 bucks on a 23" display, a 6800 card, and a powermac 2.5 and 4 gb extra ram..

well isn't that a coincidence???

That is one post for every buck I spent! or one buck for every post in this thread.. whatever

My attempt at spreadsheet cleanup

CHILD810, CIR900, CMANDERS, CUBANPETE, DAVEL, FOREST, FUNCKYCHICKEN
GANSTEROFLOVE, GENERALANTILLES, GENTZ, GURURAFIKI, HARDCHEMIST,
HAZZA, HOOPY, JAZ, KASTEPH, LINX, MACOSSIE, MBISCHOFF, PUGH,

The downside to this is we're going to have a difficult time offloading these suckers on eBay if it's a known flaw. Do they work on Windows PCs too? Anybody know?

I thought that the ripple effect was supposed to be caused by poor ATI drivers, rather than an actual hardware problem with the cards?

I hope so anyway, otherwise like you say we may have trouble flogging the bloody things!

Congrats, about your screen. I know there are many magenta/pink reports on the net about these 23" screens. But the pink can be calibrated out. Be sure your color profile stays selected, if you see pink again, then your profile will not be selected (probably because it's not in the right place).

I don't think it's a bad monitor, a bad default color profile maybe.

Thanks, I really enjoy this huge crispy thing :D

I also thought that it could be a bad default color profile. Is there a thread discussing this anywhere?

Also no dead pixels!! My sacrifices to the dark lord of the dead pixels must have worked....

Thermal Runaways

Since the spreadsheet is still being maintained, how about adding a more interesting field (at least for me). How many people who have received their 2.5's or G5's in general have suffered from thermal runaways, how many have had these fixed? I had my G5 for just under 3 weeks, it's now sitting in the Menlo Park mall waiting for new processors (and entire liquid cooling system with two back fans). I won't get it back until early next week. :(

What are thermal runaways? Does your machine ever randomly go into jet-engine mode, then suddenly go to sleep? If you run a temperature monitor you'll see the temperature spike to around 215F just before it sleeps in a matter of <5 seconds. If you consult your system log (Apple menu -> About this mac -> More information -> logs -> system log) search for "thermal runaway." In a weeks time I had just under 40 occurances. After resetting the PRAM they ended up deciding I needed new processors. I'm not alone, and apparently this affects DP2.0's as well. Anyways, if you've had this problem why not fire off an email to this list and maybe TAMTAM or some other kind soul will update the spreadsheet.

Drive partitioning after the fact: SOLO ACT?

Hi, I'm tempted to try some of the drive paritioning tips before I give up hope on my new G5 -- but am afraid now that I've started personalising it, it's too late.

Are there apps to do safe partitions if you've already got data on the drive?

Also, have not checked the discs provided, but they only mention OS X Install -- as opposed to 'Software Restore' to return the G5 to its virgin state.

Anybody know? Is the iLife'04 app included on the software disc provided?

Cheers in advance for any tips.

Good day to all of you!

I am still waiting for my D2.5 + 30" + 6800...

I was discussing yesterday with a friend of mine who is a die-hard PC user and he surprised me by telling me that he looked at G5's... he also said "If I won the Lottery, I would buy one... These G5's are sooo expensive!!"...

I have to admit it is a true statement... (my config is almost 10K!). Especially when it comes to Hard drives and memory. My friend brought to my attention that I should order the minimum RAM and the Minimum HD and look in other directions to upgrade RAM and HD...

Can someone tell me what brand Apple is using for HD and RAM?
Can someone comment on the cost of buying RAM and HD from another vendor than Apple?

Thanks guys!

Michel

Yes, one of the reasons apple still sells a top model G5 with only 512 MB ram is because that's where they make the profit! overcharging for extra harddrive, and extra RAM..

Kingston memory is a good brand..
As for harddrives, I never actually had problems with any brand..

You have maxtor, seagate, Quantum, IBM, ... I don't know..

it's easy to add one yourselve. also the RAM, put it in there yourself and save a ton of money..

I bought 4 GB of RAM from Kingston straight from the distributor, and paid only 160 euros. or 170 $ I guess.. I did not need an extra harddrive (yet)

Check out http://www.subrosasoft.com/thestore/product_info.php?products_id=431

They have a product called VolumeWorks
"VolumeWorks enables you to resize and manage partitions (volumes) on your hard drives. Unlike traditional methods of erasing, and repartitioning the drive, VolumeWorks allows you to expand or shrink partitions without erasing them." I own a copy, but I have not actually used it to repartition yet. regards - joe40

This problem sounds quite troublesome. When this sleep occurs, does it mean that the G5 is unusable for a period of time?

I buy all of my memory these days from Crucial and usually buy hard drives and such from NewEgg (which, despite the odd name, is a legitimate and extremely well-run business with great prices and an excellent return policy).

Thermal Runaways

Thermal runaways result in the machine putting itself to sleep immediately. Fans stop. clicks off. BUT, it's only sleep. if you wait 5 seconds and click the mouse to wake the machien up everything comes right back. all your apps are running. even your network connections are unfazed since the sleep was soo brief. but if you are away from your machine then I'm sure ssh connections and the like would drop. If you try waking the machien up IMMEDIALTELY you'll get it to wake adn then sleep again right away. 5 seconds is necessary for the die temps to drop ~70F.

Someone has already suggested this, but check out NewEgg.com.
I purchased my RAM from them and was pleasantly surprised by the cost, service, and shipping from newegg.
I ordered Crucial RAM through newegg which are compatible with our G5s -- I emailed Crucial to verify and was told so.

They're also a great choice for other devices, like harddrives.

Cheers! (btw, SWEET set up!)

Here is a couple of pics of the STOCK hardware from a Dual 2.5

Stock Harddrive SEAGATE 160 SATA Barracuda ST3160023AS
Stock 256MB Memory HYNIX PC3200U-30030 DDR 400MHz CL3
ADD-IN 512 MB Apple Brand Memory from the Apple Store PC3200U-30031 DDR 400MHz CL3 (Micron Brand)

My understanding is you could get much better pricing on memory elsewhere as many others have noted. Also, there are MUCH faster SATA hardrives out there. www.barefeats.com and tom's hardware guide flush this topic out rather well.

I've had four EPISODES of thermal runaways already (sometimes it just keeps going higher in temp after waking up -- bad news for Ganders, Glassbathroom and Mfx possibly). I was reinstalling loads of software at the time (copying stuff over the network from the old machine, mounting .dmg files simultaneously, and installing something from the internal optical drive). System just shut down without any warning, or chance to intervene.

System logs say: localhost kernel: PowerMac7,3 Thermal Manager: Thermal Runaway Detected: System Will Sleep

Was on the phone with Apple Support and they had never heard of this before -- but have offered to try to fix it, and if they can't fix it issue a new machine. But they said I might have better luck talking to Apple Store on Monday because they might be in a position to send out a replacement machine so I don't have any down time.

I will only take the replacement machine if they will still honour the 10-day unconditional money-back offer once I get that machine.

Wonder what they might offer me as an incentive to keep it if I do try to send it back...

I doubt that there would be any incentive to just keep the machine. If there is a problem it would be best to let Apple either fix ore replace. Where are you getting the 10 day guarantee?

The UK policy seems a bit more 'flexible' with regard to CTO orders. The US policy specifically states:

Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:

Product that is custom configured to your specifications

*** ouch ***

The UK policy states:

7.1 If you are not satisfied with any Product or the terms of any entitlement to Services you have purchased from us, you may return the Product to us or cancel the entitlement to Services and obtain a refund of the price of the returned Product or Service entitlement if you contact us within 10 Working Days of delivery of the Product or the purchase of Services. However, you may not return a Product and claim a refund if the Product concerned is Software which (i) we supplied to you sealed and unused and you have broken the seal or (ii) which you have successfully downloaded from the AppleStore website. You may not obtain a refund for a Service if you have commenced use of the Service.

Does anybody in here think that the next revision of PM will be this backlogged and experience severe shipping delays?!

I seriously thought about cancelling my order and was willing to wait for a the next revision, but after a couple of hours on a rented DP 2.0 512 MB RAM running osX 10.3.5 + Protools TDM 6.4, I was convinced that the DP 2.5 is worth the delay.

just hope that the machine won't be DOA.

good luck to all.

I am sooooooo pissed at the moment. I went to Comp USA and they had about 7 dual 2.0 machines. I could have a G5 tonight.

However this isn't like the "old days" where you paid an extra $500 for 50 MHz. The extra $500 is buying a hell of a lot of power these days.

This wait is killing me. I know alot of people would say that since I ordered on August 13th that I haven't been waiting that long. That isn't true as I have been waiting since they were announced for them to show up in stores so I could just go and get one. Three months later that hadn't happened so I decided to just order online one the status changed to 3-5 weeks.

Now I am in the position that I have to wait on this unit to ship to me from apple because I ordered the 6800 (really need it for Maya). I can't see going and picking up a stock machine and cancelling my order from apple and paying $600 bucks for this card when I can get it for an extra $450 if I wait.

Man this whole ordeal takes the cake.

Speaking of cake I think apple should buy us one. :)

All the Apple reps seem to have a little flexibility when it comes to crunch time -- stories of people getting a further $200 off when they were about to cancel.

I think they'd try to rectify the fact that I (like all of us) had such a horrendous wait and then add insult to injury by having a 'DOA' machine delivered after the ordeal.

I also think as a business they could justify sending me a few hundred dollars worth of software (that I'll need to update in the future) vs. losing over £5K revenue.

I don't think I'm being greedy. I think I'm entitled to something 'extra' after what I've been through.
