Installed my 6800 Ultra in the Dual 2.5GHz G5

I sure hope 10.3.6 brings some improvements in the Nvidia drivers because my newly installed 6800 Ultra doesn't really show any improvement over the stock 9600xt. My composite XBench score was actually lower with the 6800U and the Cinebench scores were about the same for the GFX card tests. Anybody do some Xbench or Cinebench tests with the new card??

HA! Apple US, allready brings out refurbisched Macs, while I didn't even receive mine ordered 4 months ago. tsss

Well, I've just spent a few hours trying to set up my new REPLACEMENT 2.5 DP and of course the migration tool failed because the old one suffered a (now predictable) Thermal Runaway and shut down!

After a few minutes I (finally) notice that this new machine is humming a steady frequency like A (440hz) or something. I've yet to play my keyboard against it to find out -- but the whole purpose of my buying this new baby was to do music with Logic, and I can't have any unncessary noise in the room!

I talked Apple Support into letting me change all the moving bits between the two machines (hard drive, internal fans) but: no. Still humming like a hummingbird. Now we're in talks to receive a NEW replacement.

Let's hope the saying is true: 'third time lucky'...

Just ordered

Dual 2.5Ghz w/ Radeon 9800XT
2GB RAM
160GB SATA HDD (was going to go for the 2x250, but I already have a bunch of external > 120GB HDD's)

23" Aluminum Cinema Display (which arrives today...)

Fortunately, I already have a dual 1Ghz G4 MDD Windtunnel, which I can use with the display until the G5 gets here.

... estimated ship date ... on or before 11/24/2004. I am not holding my breath.

Actually the saying is, "third time is a charm." I wish you success. Thought that Apple tested the computer prior to shipping. Unless the shipping process is doing damage.

Yes, grebo, I really hope you get a functioning G5 soon!
It's been way too long already, you can come over this weekend if you like, england isn't that far from bruges

good luck!

all the best , grebo !!!

Can you FEEL the love in this room?

Wow, I'm touched, everybody, by your selfless wishes to see me get a computer I'm happy with. Yeah, this thing is making a tone not too dissimilar from the tone accompanying colour bars when you wake up in front of the TV in the middle of the night. It really is disappointing -- and I doubt they could have detected this noise in a crowded factory. It is readily apparent in a small room. (Question: can anybody else feel a vibration when they touch the top of the extruded handles on the chassis? I can on this one, but not on the last one -- perhaps that's why it was overheating!)

Oh, and I have to take exception though to being corrected when I don't think I should be corrected. If you search on google for the phrase (in quotes) 'third time lucky', you'll get over 32,000 hits whereas 'third time's the charm' only yields about 9,800.

Bruges, eh? I love that beer, I really do! Never been to Belgium. When I'm on Eurostar I usually go to Paris.

Thanks again WD, Klaus and a.

Apple 23" Cinema Display

Just got my 23" HD cinema display set up and hooked up on the 2x1Ghz MDD G4 until the 2x2.5 CTO G5 arrives. I have to admin that OS/X really looks ALOT better on an LCD with lots of horizontal resolution. 1900x1200 is absolutely stunning.

I have worked on a lot of flat panels, but this happens to be the most beautiful display I have ever seen. Even better, I have *no* dead pixels (yet).

If anyone is on the fence about whether to get a 23 or 30.... do it. I might just get another one...

I feel your pain bro - I ordered mine 6/17 and haven't heard a word about it from the reseller - every time I speak with them they don't know a thing. I'm thinking that getting a 2.5 isn't worth it anymore and a 2.0 might just do the trick! Steve Jobs should at least issue a statement to all of us waiting endlessly explaining what is happening.. or give some kind of compensation in RAM or something else.

You shouldn't give on your dream of a 2.5. From other posts the resellers are getting the 2.5 already. Have you ask to speak to a supervisor? Your wait of over four months just doesn't make sense.

Sense ? - since when did that matter

I have been waiting for 3 months and my reseller still can not get Apple Australia for even confirm a delviery date for my BTO 2.5. I have called Apple directly to confirm and yep... after 3 months they can not confirm when my box will be delivered. Now that is just sad !!! and the worst customer service.

In comparision I bought 2 by 4 way SUN Servers the other day, within 24 hours I knew when they were being delivered (within two weeks) and they arrived right on schedule.

Hmm, give me the extra cash and I'll take the 30" :)
I just have a problem paying more for a monitor than the computer. Ah well, I'll be ordering my 23" in about a week. That'll have to do it till I win the lotto

I just received the 6800 yesterday ... No Xbench or Cinebench, but a simple Diablo2 test :)
Previously, with my PM7500+G2/266 card+Voodoo3, I got around 10 fps (sometimes 1 fps, hard to play :D )
With the G5 + 9600, I got around 100-100 fps.
With the 6800u, I reach 210 fps ...

Seems like some performance enhancement ...
Maybe useless yet ( can't see the difference between 40 and 200 fps) , but as I use to keep my machine several years, I'm ready for the future). And some 'modern' games are eating much more ressources.
And video editing is going to be more comfortable and funny.

Hi, grebo

Sorry too you can't get a 'true' G5 ... I hope your troubles are soon over !

Mine is nearly ok. Just some fan noises (i called applecare, but they are as fast as the delivery service :) ). Alim fan and graphic case fan (second from top) are always on, and a bit too noisy for my opinion. Bearable, but I think it's not a 'normal' situation ...
Received yesterday the 6800 ultra. So bigger than 9600  ...
Installed without difficulty. Don't notice more fan noise ... but maybe other fans are hiding any new noise ?

I wish you can soon give us good news about yours ;)

Just 14 days till shipment!?

Hi there,

I ordered my new G5 2*2,5 (2,5 GB RAM, 250GB HD, NVidia 6800) and the 23" Cinema Display two weeks ago.

Well, my dealer told me that time, according to Apples SAP system the computer should be shipped TODAY :) That means only 14 days :) :)

No confirmation yet ...

Perhaps it was just a joke and I'll also have to wait a few weeks longer :(

Lets wait and see ...

Ciao,

Andreas

Well I have been waiting since 20/7/04 for my 2.5 with 6800. I ordered through an Apple Australia reseller too and Apple won't even say when it is coming. They confirmed it had shipped two weeks ago, but now they cannot even confirm where it is or if it truly did ship.

This is a nightmare! Where is my 2.5!!! I hate apple australia, why are they so secretive with their info? I thought they would care enough about a $9500+ setup enough to at least tell me if it truly has shipped.

I wouldn't mind waiting a few more weeks if only I knew for certain what day it would be here. (What's a few more weeks when I have waited this long?)

I feel sorry for my poor reseller, the best they can say is "just one more week"...... I've been told that since September.

Anyway; I plan to raid the Apple australia offices and demmand my G5!! Who's with ME!!!?!?!?

i ordered from a uk reseller on August the 18th, stock 2.5 +6800+bluetooth.

They can't even give me a ship date either. I figured i'd have to wait, but i thought i might get it this month. Now that's not looking so likely...If i only get it in november and they update in january, i won't be mad, but i guess i will be a bit disappointed.

I have the 23 inch already, which they said would go on the applecare of the desktop, so i won't change my order now.

Here's waiting and hoping, and i know plenty of you have been waiting longer...

<ps Klaus, glad you finally got yours!>

Ciao,

benefits of patience I guess. I ordered late June, and finally closed out the order with the arrival of my 6800 two weeks ago.... parts have been trickling in from the first week when my MS office and iSight came..

Oh...Mars attacks!!! These little green pixels...

Strange...

I received my dualie 2.5 + 6800 + 30" about a week ago

And yesterday I had one of the strangest experience... Little green pixels disseminated on the screen.. Plenty of them... Some were blinking and some where not... From the many posts I have read in this forum... Seems like I have some "Dead pixels"...

Can anyone share experience... In the meantime I call Apple Care support...

Thanks for sharing

Michel

same as you... X-bench doesn't really tax the OpenGL however either... so the drivers aren't all to blame.

I am however convinced that these drives are a last minute rush to get the card in our hands... we won't see them optimized for months.. Nvidia gives Apple all of the code for the card, and it's all up to Apple to code the drivers... I wish Nvidia did them myself, that we we may have gotten more control over the card... however it's not the Apple way (which is fine if they're stable, which is why Apple want full control I guess).

Updated spreadsheets

180 G5 orders have been confirmed as received.

41 unconfirmed deliveries from users who have not posted a update as far back as August.

60 units are without a shipping date. Again most of them are from users who last posted a message as far back as July.

Value of spreadsheets deminishing with lack of input from these users, however I will continue with the updates for now.
