Stay away from the apple wireless keyboard. This thing is the biggest piece of junk I have ever used. It works great when it is working problem is if I put the computer to sleep it stops working and I have to restart the macine. I have done all the latest updates and they helped a little but overall I am very dissatisfied with this product. This is by far the worst piece of equipment I have ever bought that had a apple logo on it.

If anyone else is having good luck with this I would like to know what you are doing different.

As it stands I am going to try to return it and exchange it for a regular wired keyboard.
Hi, there is a tick box in the Energy Saver control panel OR the Keyboard control panel (can't look it up, as I'm on my PC at work now) and the setting says something like 'Bluetooth Activity wakes computer from sleep'

Maybe it's under Bluetooth?

Check it out. I'm happy with my keyboard -- it's only a problem when you've booted from CD-ROM and it may not have the wireless drivers in memory...

mine's at my dealer as well!! only one and a half hour drive...:( <i did a lot of driving yesterday...>

:p :) :D ;)

is this good news i hear on the way?

hey is this good news i hear? these machines are now hitting th uk a little but faster maybe just maybe i will get my machine in nov early i hope!!! anyone else ordered with computer warhouse and got there machine yet in the uk?

Hi all

I have been told that consumer G5's with Nvidia 6800 and 30" displays that have been ordered from a from a dealer in UK will not get their gear before 10th November.

The only people that may get theirs before this date are people that are connected with the Apple's development program or who have a direct link with Apple themselves.

According to a dealer in the UK, Apple has not and will not start shipping before the 10th November.

Does anyone else know anything different.

Thank you for posting a positive report on the wireless keyboard. It seems that the most posting is about a problem. I do realize that problems occur.

Steve can you post back when you receive your new G5, I am in the same boat as you with a Dual 1GHz G4 Windtunnel. I have not ordered the G5 yet, but I have the 23" Al Display on order. I would be very interested to hear about

1. How speed compares with the MDD, both actual and feel.

2. How much quieter the 2.5 G5 is compared with the Windtunnel. BTW did you receive and fit the fan / power supply mod from Apple ?

Thanks

James, I will definitely respond when I get the G5. I eagerly await it's arrival.

With regard to the fan/power supply mod from apple: Yes, I received it, installed it and it didn't make as much of a difference as I thought. The cooling design on the Dual 1Ghz MDD is just poor.

I originally had 2 120GB hdd's in the drive caddy near the CPU's, and found that if I took one of them out, and put it in an external firewire caddy, the fans were a little more acceptable.

I am really looking forward to a quieter computer.

I did that. The computer wakes up and then bam! It ceases to work and I have to restart to get it back. What a let down.

It is also useless if you ever have to run a fsck -y -f

Look out corded keyboard here I come! :(

clearly your bluetooth module is defective... get if fixed and all will be well. Or maybe you have radio interference in your area (unlikely).

Thanks, I hope you don't have to wait too long. I actually use my Powerbook in the evening as you can hear the drone of the PowerMac MDD all over the house, and sometimes wakes my daughter up, who is in the room next door! Modern houses with paper thin walls and noisy computers don't mix.

Well, picked mine up from reseller this afternoon.
Overall few complaints; once i'd plugged the antenna in the keyboard and mouse worked fine!

The fans do kick in just web browsing for a few seconds and then switch off again. Much quieter than my old dell desktop which bit the dust in Easter.
For anyone whose interested, to test out the 6800 Ultra i downloaded the UT2004 demo. At full res with all options on it was incredibly smooth. I did not note the FPS down, but it really really flew. I'll swear OSX actually looks nicer than it did when the 1ghz 12 inch PB drove this 23 inch. probablly psychological though. ;)

Anyway, good luck all you guys still waiting!

i cant wait its really killing me im a bit scared of leaving such a powerful machine online for hours. the fact is i live in student accomadation down in bournemouth and got a feeling i may wake up my room mates! the wait continues, does anyone think there will be a noticable difference from using my powerbook oldskool 1ghz?

Just arrived...

Been reading this thread for months, first post though.

G5 2.5 ordered middle of August arrived yesterday.

A few quick questions for those in the know:

1 - Is the internal HD connection proprietory as I cannot see how to connect my spare ATA hard drive?

2 - The 9600 card has two connectors - one DVI and the other I guess is ADC. I need to connect 2 DVI screens, is there a cheaper way than Apple's ADC>DVI convertor?

3 - How can I monitor the CPU temps as the fans seem to rev up very frequently.

Overall impression, loud when it's revving, but mighty fast.

Cheers,
Tom

1 - The G5's have s-ata, not ordinary ATA, so you cannot add your harddrive internal without the use of a special adapter or pci-card. You may want to use an external firewire-box or something.

2 - I think belkin makes sells them a little cheaper

3 - Hardware monitor, easily found on google I think

cheers

Tom

checkout post #5911 on this thread. (very cool app!)

usage recommendation:
1. customize to display two values in the dock and menu. (cpu a+B die temp)
2. customize using the full application, and later add the lite version in the User's "Startup apps list".

good luck.

You might also want to consider the OWC Mercury Elite. There external hard drive comes in Fireware. I have one it works great, it's quiet. Comes highly reccomended by many, such as Dr. Mac/Bob Levitus.

The internal HD connector is a standard S-ATA (Serial ATA) connection; older ATA HDs are Parallel ATA. While there are P-ATA to S-ATA adapters made, I'd recommend just buying an inexpensive Firewire enclosure (I like the ME-320 line; just search for this at NewEgg.com or another online store) and installing the ATA HD in there yourself (its very easy to do so).

Apple should have included an ADC-to-DVI converter with the G5. I'm pretty sure they did so with my system, but I ordered the ATI 9800XT, so that may be why I got the adapter...

I recommend Hardware Monitor (shareware; 7 €, or about $9 US when I bought it) or Temperature Monitor (freeware) from Marcel Bresink Software.

so what cable do you get with a powerbook? is that a mini dvi to big dvi? It's just that i'm sure OSX looks better through the 23inch when driven with the 6800 than bu my powerbook.

To Everyonew who received their new DP 2.5 system

I'm sure this was brought up before but i havent seen it recently..

If you have received a new DP 2.5 system in the past week or 2, could you post your est ship dates and also the actual ship date? I'm just currious (as many are) of the accuracy of apples ship date that they provide on line.

For me I Ordered:

2.5 DP CTO, 512MB Ram, 160GB HD, 9800XT video, No modem, no bluetooth.
with Educational Discount.

Ordered on 10/13/2004 (3-5 weeks shipping)

Est Ship Date Nov. 19th... (5 weeks, 2 days.) <---I hope not

Chris

Thanks everyone... I cant wait for my new system... I'm finally able to get rid of my DP 533 system...WOOHOO... should be a little faster :)

This isn't a 2.5 issue, per se, but since many of you have the 6800 here, I thought it'd be more appropriate in this thread. I was one of those who took the Radeon 9600 deal when they couldn't ship the 6800, and for 3-4 weeks I was quite happy with the performance of the 9600, especially for playing games like Diablo II.

However, since installing the 6800, it's like I've regressed in quality. Whereas Diablo was previously smooth, the 6800 absolutely butchers the picture with tearing and misaligned elements. Even on the Flurry screen saver, I can see where the image isn't being drawn properly, as there are broad flashing lines in the image that never existed before. I'd like to think that I paid $500 extra for something tangible, but it's very disappointing to have the most advanced card available and still have worse quality than the current low-end video card. Has anyone else experienced anything like this, or have any suggestions about what to do?

Ok, I ordered mine on 13th October (from the online UK store), Estimated Ship date is 17th November

2.5GHz PowerPC G5
2GB MB DDR400 (PC3200)-4x512
160GB Serial ATA-7200rpm
8x Super Drive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
56k V.92 Modem
BlueTooth Module
Airport Extreme Card-EURO

I Don't have a clue where it would be shipped from, i originally thought ireland, But the Isight I bought recently came from China, and a mate at work who ordered a new imac with the big screen 3 weeks ago recieved shipping notification yesterday, and that's coming from China.

I'm not that fussed about artifacts in the 6800 Ultra at the moment, as I know that just needs a driver update on the system.. which is due out any moment anyway.

Why am I checking the order status 4 times a day, i've turned into an order status whore!! :D

Yikes! I hope this is simply a driver issue and will be resolved. Have you seen they have announced a 6800-lite version of the card?
