communication is the key

Whatever is happening, why oh why does apple not give some basic information to their resellers and applestore buyers.

They seem to forget that some other people and factorys use there computers, maybe to earn their mony, who knows? It is very hard planning your work in this way.

no G5 - called apple belgium

No is has not. I have filled out the info correct, but on the site a date appears, while I had selected 'no date'. Dont know what went wrong.

On the other hand, I just called the Belgium department of the apple corp. (had the phone number becouse I worked at an apple reseller couple of years ago - I called the corporation, not helpdesk or store).

They told they dont have very specific information (no actual date, just a indication), but it should be the end of august. BUT (on a sidenote) they also told me they will not be there by the end of august! I said: "so it will be in september?" answer: "Most likely, yes, we apology...". :( :(

of course they apologize, but what's in it for us.. I ordered through a reseller, and I can't ask them for compensation, free memory or something, cause they too are a victim of the delay. They can't help it either, so what should they do, ask for compensation themselves and calculate that back into our price or something?

I'm getting impatient..cause i've ordered almost like 2 months ago.. glad I didn't pay a penny yet though.

Why go 90nm across the boards...

What I don't understand, is if IBM is having so much difficulty with their 90nm process, why would they move the whole PM line over.

There seemed to be no problem producing enough stock to meet the demand for the 130nm 1.8 and 2.0 parts. Why not leave that line alone and concentrate on 90nm for just the 2.5 chips. That way your fab problems aren't effecting the whole entire PM line, and causing delays accross the boards. You can also concnetrate all your efforts on binning just a certain speed, and any chips that didn't meet that 2.5 could be saved for future models.

I don't know, I don't claim to know anything about chip fab, but I find it terribly unlikely that Apple would change all the PM to 90nm without some serious, serious reassurances from IBM that its yield problems would not effect the slower models. They probably knew that the 2.5s would be limited - but not the whole line. That's why I find it hard to believe this new rumor. I don't doubt that maybe there is something wrong at apple, but I don't know if it's IBMs fault.

Apple seems to be having a lot of trouble getting stock out the door across almost their entire line of products, and it all can't be blamed on their subcontractors. Look at the iPod Mini - many have claimed that many other companies have no problem receiving mass quantities of hitachi 4gb drives... why is it just apple. And if you looked at the recent Appleinsider article posted here (http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=584), they suggest it was mainly heat issues that delayed the 2.5 up until its release.

That's just my 2c though.

A thousand thanks for implementing the G5 order database for us. It will be exciting to see them arrive. A few suggestions:

1. Correct the spellings of "receive" on the entry form.
2. How about a column to enter the "on or before" date?
3. Maybe people could post their FedEx tracking numbers in a column?
4. A column to enter what machine they'll be replacing would be interesting since there are quite a few making huge jumps.
5. A column to enter a link to a user's photos/reviews once they've received their Mac.

Thanks!

mactarkus

Okay, 1. fixed it... "i before e except of... uh.. what was that again?" :D
2-5. Good ideas, but everyone would need to go back and edit their info. If you guys want it though, let me know.

Edit: I noticed that there are other entries that say yes to receiving the machine without a date next to it. If you have received it, please enter a date for it or PM me or if you have not received it but it says you have PM me as well.

I'll edit mine. Only thing I'd add is a small column with Country. ie UK, USA, Fr etc. It seems america is getting theirs and i'd like to know if any have arrived in the UK

2.5 GHz not a proven part....

pooka said:
Furthermore, keep in mind that this isn't even an Apple part - it's a proven IBM product. Power 5 exists without Apple. So it's a revision, of a revision, of a revision.

Couple of points....

o the 2.5 GHz chip is not "proven" - it is a speed bump on the 90nm PPC970fx. The 90nm has been in short supply from the get-go - even at the "slow" 2.0 GHz point. (Check problems with XServe backlogs....)

The 2.5 GHz part doesn't show up in IBM's literature, or any IBM system. The fastest PPC970* that IBM uses in a sytem is a 1.6 GHz in the JS20. The 2.5 GHz is definitely bleeding-edge!

o The PPC970* chips are POWER4-based chips, they are not based on the POWER5 chips. The PPC970 (130nm) was more than a revision - it was a major rework of the POWER4 (removed second processor and shared cache, added VMX instructions....).

The PPC970fx is a revision of the PPC970 (130nm -> 90nm, some power management,...). The biggest change was the move to 90nm, which is the root of most of the supply issues.

(POWER5 chips are 130nm, by the way - they're built on the larger, more stable process.)

Question

Hello there ,
i've also been on this waiting list for a while as well. I ordered a dual 2.5 on 6/24 and NO shipping date yet.

I'm a web designer and i'm switching from a pc, but this eternal wait has confused me a little, i'm starting to look down to the dual 2.0 and just upgrading the video card, i already have 2gb of ram . I'll get applecare as soon as i get the machine.

My question to you guys is: Should i get th dual 2.0?? ,,,or should i wait for the magic shipping date of the dual 2.5??

thanks

Difficult to answer since you don't say exactly what you're going to do with you mac. ;)
A faster machine is always better, but if you're doing only some little Photoshop jobs (no big file sizes) and webdesign the Dual 2.0 will.

I myself do 3D works so I need all the processing power I can get from Apple.

Just my 2 Euro cents. :D

I don't know the current situation in the States but according to another poster, it's impossible to get any G5 in Europe. If you cancel your order, your wait will probably be longer.

In the spreadsheet I've been running I've had a column for the date people got a shipping estimate, one the estimated shipping date, and one for arrival date.

Also, anyone with a country other than the US had that country in their config. window.

With that info, not only can you see which countries have recieved their G5, but you can see which person/country is next in line to get theirs. You can also see when apple is sending out waves of shipment notices, and correlate the est shipping dates for those notices.

I felt all that info would help me figure out shipping trends easier, plus I can get exited for the next wave of arrivals, and with only a small handful of shipment notices going out last friday, we may be on the edge of another wave. Its all on the spreadsheet. (which I haven't updated for a couple days)

The legend also helps to abbreviate and make the config window smaller and the info in there easier to scan. --E

I Gotta Have More Cowbell, Baby!!!

It seems like once it starts to rain, it will pour, and the entire G5 line should start showing reasonable shipping estimates. If that is true, then the 2.5s shouldn't take too much longer to receive than the slower machines.

As Bruce Dickinson said, "I'm tellin' you, fellas, you're gonna want that cowbell on the track."

I personally would wait for the fastest machine possible. Even web design will take its toll on CPU issues as you find the need to run Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia and/or GoLive at the same time.

However, the question can only be answered by you. Do you need the machine right now or can you survive without it at the moment?

STATS:

According to my spreadsheet, all current received orders are USA. Belgium, Canada, UK, and Germany orders that I happened to read are scheduled on or before 8/20.

THere are 8 that are on the edge of receiving, or might have received friday and today.

I'm most curious about who has received a shipping notice in the last few days. --E

I find it a little hard to believe that anyone got one 2 weeks ago since they only started shipping last week, although the Apple Store in the Houston Galleria did get in a few late last week but they're gone by now though. They only had one left when I called last Friday afternoon.

They absolutely did if the lady on the phone wasn't confused or making a mistake, but I doubt she was. She said she was looking right at it as we spoke, but said that was the last one they had. They apparently only received a handful of them (either 2 or 4 she said) last Thursday and there was only one left by Friday afternoon. She said she wasn't sure why they would have received such a small shipment, but apparently for some reason they got a few anyway. None of the other stores I've called have had any yet.

My G5 arrived today.

g5unveiled.jpg

(I didn't get a shot of the FedEx guy since the computer arrived on my porch while I was in the shower.)

I had told myself I'd leave it in the box until I got home from work, but it arrived so early in the morning I fell to temptation and set it up. I even ran Setup Assistant for about an hour and now my G5 has all my mail, iTunes songs, photos, etc. Sweet.

I knew I shouldn't've started it up though, since now I don't want to leave!

The thought that the Fed-Ex guy just left your G5 on the porch is very scary. I think that I would hate to leave in your situation also. Hope that you won't be late for work.
