Mac Connection Update

I called Mac Connection this morning. The latest word from Apple to them is that they will receive enough G5 2.5's to fullfill all 3 waves of backorders on Aug. 27th. Mac Connection says they should ship out that same day, as well.

I am wondering, whether these will have been assembled in China or Ireland as Mac Connection is in New Hampshire. Will there be Guinness in the liquid cooling system or water from the Yangtze river?

Oh well, I'll have another 20 days to ponder these thoughts as will my many 2.5 GHz-less comrades. However, chin up as they say.

:D

G5 2.5 arrived

My G5 2.5 arrived about an hour and a half ago. I was surprised at how long Setup Assistant took to copy my files etc. from my TiBook 500, given that it only needed to copy about 6 GB. It took about an hour total. But now the G5 is up and running, and it's wonderful. As a "feel" test, I just loaded up GarageBand with a "song" I'd "composed", and it was lightning-fast to load and to edit tracks, compared to the TiBook. Anyway, it's great. It's still funny to have received mine so quickly relative to others---I only ordered on 7/19, so it took three weeks and a day---but good for me as it's my work computer and there's plenty of work to be done for the classes beginning next week.

Congrats crunchy! Thanks for the speed observation. Any other insights are definitely welcome. --E

Makes sense... :)

Personally, it sort of annoys me when people give America a bad name by becoming so morbidly obese. I dislike burgers and fries, myself...

1- it's everyones own responsibility
2- forbid all "all-you-can-eat restaurants"
3- Take Homer Simpson as a Bad example instead of a rolemodel
4- Please do not order 2 double cheesburger with extra fries, and a DIET-COKE
5- My sister went to the states 3 weeks ago and the only thing she indeed noticed was that you have 3 degrees of people: The ones with photomodel body's (rather rare), the ones who pass through as "normal" but are according to worldwide healthcare still overweight, and then.. well yes.. a catogory with .. well you know.. cargostuff..

6- keep in mind that if we europeans continue to do as we do now, predictions are the population will have 7 out of 10 having overweight by 2030

7- Let's go and do some exersise with that black G5 box.. and up!!! and down.. and up!! and down.. but hey! wait! it's empty!!!!

APPLE YOU SHOULD FILL IT WITH HEAVY G5's!! the health of the world depends on you!

On the setup assistant, can one choose what they want to copy over to the new computer? I want my work and stuff but I don't want anything else... I want to start out new with this G5.

It's terrible that, only 2 hours later, I can't exactly remember: all such a blur on the excitement of arrival (after a little FedEx confusion, phone calls, etc.). But I think that the answer is NO, that you either choose to copy over everything---basically your network settings, users, applications, and files and folders---or nothing. I too would have preferred to be able to choose, in particular to choose not to copy over my applications, but this is ok. It didn't copy every app either, as I had to install iTunes 4.6 on the G5, but had installed 4.6 a long time ago on the TiBook.

Now I'm in the process of consolidating my iTunes library from my external hard drive...all 83.17 GB of it...even a DP 2.5GB G5 can't make this quick, unfortunately...

I've been wondering the same thing.

Gosh I'm excited... The wait until Friday will be difficult, but at least I now have a TRACKING NUMBER!!!!

My extra 1.0GB of RAM from Crucial arrived yesterday, and my second hard drive (300GB, 7200RPM, 16MB cache) was just ordered from ZipZoomfly.com and should arrive on Thursday or Friday.

It was nearly a year in coming, but this upgrade will REALLY be nice.

I remember seeing screenshots of setup assistant that let you choose whether you watned to copy users/apps/librarys/etc.

but i haven't used it first hand so i could be wrong.

found these links:

Well, I don't have a 2.5 yet, but in the Tiger Preview you could choose a few options: Nothing, Preferences and Home folder, and then also Applications. I'd assume it's the same migration tool used on 10.3.

Crunchy, I've another question about the assistant. Does it also copy data from a second harddrive or different partition? Or does it copy the boot drive only? I'm asking because I have a second harddisk in my G4 and the main HDD is divided into three partitions. Maybe someone else can answer this, too.

Thanks,
WOA

MY STATS WITH 10 DAYS TO GO:

134 total orders

Of those, 16 have arrived in the last 8 days.

I ordered on 6-26

There are 48 orders in front of mine. And thats NOT including non-USA orders and reseller orders, but that includes estimated shipping dates beyond 8-20.

Using only the estimated shipping date of 8-20, there are still 26 orders (including non-USA & resellers) ordered before mine that have an 8-20 shipping date.

Subtracting the 6 shipment announcements from europe that came in today, that leaves (just for this forum-including non-USA and reseller orders) 38 total orders with an estimated Aug-20 ship date that need to be shipped in the next 10 days.

So.........the next 10 days will either be VERY exciting with lots of shipping announcements, quieter than expected with a few orders falling through the cracks, or sadly disappointing with another wave of shipping delay announcements.

HERE'S TO AN EXCITING NEXT 10 DAYS. Lets hope for the best!

1. True
2. HELL NO
3. But he's soooooo funny....
4. Yeah that's pretty stupid...
5. How'd she get in without being labeled a terrorist? :D :p

Fast Service!

For those that may be lurking and have not ordered yet I thought that I would pass on a recommendation.

There is a guy that I always order from at MacMall/PCMall/ClubMac (same company btw) that gets product to me faster than anyone else ever has.

I don't know how he does it, but it always works. I do not ask and he does not say how. I just give him my orders and he does the 'magic'.

For example, I ordered my Dual 2.5GHz G5 (stock) less than 2 weeks ago and I am expecting it to ship within the next week.

His name is Keith at (800) 555-6255 ext. 4970

Keith has done good things for me and I thought I would let you guys know about him.

Yes this is a plug but for the record - I have no association with him or the company other than as a customer and receive no benefit from this post.

Hopefully this is helpful to some of you.

I can almost smell it!

I never thought I would see the day where someone from Europe got their Apple product before someone in the U.S.

Better inform President Bush. He'll put this right... :D ;)

Yeah i think i spy some weapons of mass computing power in Ireland, come on hurry up and invade, we will make sure those G5's dont fall into the hands of terrorists!! ;)

(It shouldnt be that hard to convince Bush it is a just cause)

On today's call to Apple I was informed that my order has been recognized by the assembly plant and can no longer be changed, it could still be canceled but no longer changed. The guy on Apple's end of the phone couldn't say if that meant it would ship soon or not. Of interest, my credit card was pre-authorized yesterday. Maybe this is good. I'm trying not to get excited.

Next time any of you call Apple ask if you can still change your order?

Friday Afternoon (6/6): I rush home to set up my 2.5 Ghz G5.
Sunday Night: I leave my G5 on for the first time overnight because I'm copying massive files.
Monday Morning: I wake up and my computer seems happy. I start to make a disk image w/ toast and browse the net. The fans suddently kick into high gear, higher than I've ever heard before. Then it goes to sleep. I wake it up br pressing the space bar, but the fans kick up after a minute or two and seconds later it goes back to sleep.

Crap. My happiness is crushed.

Apple tech support couldn't figure out what was happening. They had me do all the basic stuff: Reset the PMU, reset the PRAM, wait in hold while they get a product specialist. Even worse, this forced sleep only happens when it wants to, some times it works for hours before showing up. They couldn't figure it out, so they sent me to my nearby apple store

I ran ThermographX, but the tempatures seem to be all normal. The Apple hardware extened test passed just fine. I left on Monday night just running Folding@Home and found it sleeping in the morning. (I double checked and all the sleep settings are set to never) When I woke it up, the clock showed ~3:30am before it set to the correct 8:54. At this point the computer should have been quite cool as the room was generally is in the morning. But after only haveing the computer on for 3 minutes, the fans kicked into high gear for 10 sec and then it went back to sleep.

The G5 is heavy. Carrying it to my car, no problem. Carrying it across a parking lot, around a construction zone , and through a mall made me a little tired.

The Apple store is currently holding me G5, running their better testing software.

What do you guys think?

LOL

As much as I would like to continue the Bush-bashing I think it's time we got back on topic..........

IT SHIPPED!!!!!!

Just kidding :D

OT : FYI - Good news for Cinema 4D users...

For those still waiting impatiently for the G5, you might be interested in a new development that occurred at Siggraph today! - Maxon revelead Cinema 4D R9, and amongst the enormous amount of new features (which are mind blowing to us 3D guys!) was the small fact that now Cinema 4D is G5 optimised meaning that those best figures done with the optimised Cinebench are no longer theoretical!

If like me, you are upgrading from a 1Ghz G4, you will be getting roughly 7x the rendering speed you currently do! :D if like some of you, are upgrading from G4 400s etc, you will be getting about 15-16x the render speeds!!
