First: It WILL be thinner.

Second:"first impressions could underwhelm."

Leave it to Apple to get the first thing second and then allow it to underwhelm.

My prediction for iPhone 2016- UNDERWHELMING. Look I know that the phones are mature and there's not much that can be done to improve, I'm the one that has been saying that for the past 3 years. But this year the boo's are going to be deafening.

Bigger phone has more hardware. No duh. Big deal.

This is like people expecting a huge V8 engine in a subcompact car.

You can't expect a sub compact car to have an engine as large as a full sized car.

Same with phones. A large phone just has way more room to put more hardware.

iPhone 7 Pro - 5.5 inch screen, 32GB, dual camera's $750
iPhone 7 - 4.7 inch, 16 GB, single camera $650

I see no problem with this lineup

A lot of people are going to be upset about this but stop and think about it for a second. Do you REALLY need this feature? o_O

It's not necessarily always whether or not you "need" a feature, it's the fact that you are buying a top-tier, state-of-the-art smartphone (and paying a premium for it, mind you). When you buy a brand new smartphone, you shouldn't be missing out on features right out of the box.

So... iPhone/iPad innovation at Apple today: or you pay more for a "Pro" label or you pay more for a giant device.

Same thing with the 27" iMac. A retina iMac? Sure, great, awsome, yay! But WTF happened with the price?

I don't mind having some exclusive features, but that's a deep cut to the folks that like the small phones.

And as someone has said already, Apple shouldn't slowly march their way to fragmentation. Just because iOS is solid across the board, doesn't mean that feature fragmentation should be ignored. The iPad Pro is a glaring example.

So the bigger phone that already has a better camera than the smaller phone will continue to have a better camera. And this is surprising in what way exactly? People don't have to like it but they shouldn't be surprised by it. Of course assuming this rumor is true.

I've always chased the models with the best camera specs, abandoning my beloved iPhone 4 for the better camera of the iPhone 5s.

I'm done. I'm disgusted--at the rumors and I'm going to just pretend they are true--of course I'm not stupid and will revise my opinion and options when the reality reveals itself in the future.

But pretending for now these predictions are accurate, I'm not thrilled. Two models now, I've had to put up with a size I didn't really like to get the better camera specs. WTH, it's still a crappy cell phone camera when all is said and done. I got a nice DSLR for Christmas. I'm crap at using it, but I'm learning.

I feel I'm done chasing camera specs and need to start thinking about my satisfaction with a given model in its entirety. Which for me, means thinking more about downsizing someday from this 6S Plus behemoth. It's the best iPhone I've ever had but it reminds me of my days hauling a baby around.

The rumors so far are not exactly exciting. I am fine with the current displays. I even am fine with the old displays. So the rumors of the new screens aren't even enticing me away from my iPhone 6S Plus. It's kind of sad it's the humble SE that was making me drool.

Oh well these are just rumors. It's all in good fun to speculate and complain. Especially before my caffeine fix kicks in. (Shh...don't tell my doc I'm sneaking some real tea!).

I bet you'll get people trading in their iPhone 6 and 6S for the new SE as they want that small phone design, and at the time the only option for the latest was a 4.7" device.
And here is a rumour Apple will stick only flagship camera features on a giant phablet that I would argue is it's lowest selling iPhone.
Meh most people don't use 3D Touch, so this new camera could end up the same, people won't buy the Plus for the camera, but for it's big size.

They took a slice out of the battery for a haptic engine on the iPhone 6s (which isn't all that useful), so no one dare defend Apple on this matter and say dual cameras won't fit the smaller model.

This is so frustrating, as I actually considered the iPhone SE but didn't "downgrade" because of the inferior FaceTime camera.

Apple needs to stop with all this fragmentation. The only thing that should be exclusive to the 5.5" model is the 5.5" screen size. 3D Touch, dual lens camera, A10, etc. need to be uniform across all models from 5.5" to 4" screens. Same with iPad sizes and Pencil, etc.

what a mistake. the fragmentation is nasty. that 5.5 is WAY to large for active people.

Apples move and im sure i won't hurt them as a departing customer, but if the S8E builds off of the S7, that'll be my next phone.

You know that the S7 Edge is 5.5 inches right? I guess it's possible that they could make it smaller like 5.1" like the S6 Edge but I don't see that being very likely.

Dude its about basic geometry.

You can fit more stuff in a large phone then in a small phone. So of course the big phone will be able to fit hardware the small phone can't.

Guys consider the possibility that this new camera technology is likely to be in limited production. Apple may not have a choice. Beyond all of that we don't even know if the tech is worth it.

Everyone is assuming that this is a huge step forward. We really won't know until the hardware ships and the software is stable.

Could be due to limitations, maybe the dual camera simply doesn't fit in the 4.7 inch iPhone.
Or it could be that Apple is trying to keep the "plus" meaningful, I don't know!
I'm personally going to skip the iPhone 7 no matter what it has, I will wait for 2017.

I'm thinking the same thing. But if Jobs was still around he would've said to figure out how to make it work or don't use it at all. I don't believe that fragmentation is something he wanted.

What a silly statement.

This is like expecting a Honda Fit, Honda Civic, and Honda Accord to all have the exact same engine.

Dude every heard of geometry? You can't expect a small phone to pack in all the same hardware as a much larger phone. Just as you can't expect a sub compact car to have the same engine as a full sized car.

While I agree in general with your sentiment, other than the camera is there anything else different about the 5.5" model? Marketing departments will always come up with ways to get people to spend more money. With iPhone Apple decided the camera would be that thing. How is this different than other companies that have phones with different specs at different price points? Nokia didn't bring its 41MP camera to every phone in its lineup. My guess is Apple marketing felt they wouldn't get enough people to spend $100 more for a slightly bigger screen so they decided to give it a better camera. I'm not arguing right or wrong just my guess at Apple's thinking.

While y'all complain about the 5.5-inch iPhone having dual cameras, I am more concerned about Apple not shrinking the ridiculous bezel!

And where exactly is the home button and Touch ID supposed to go? If new technology that got rid of the physical home button was available to be manufacturer en mass and Apple was working on it we'd know about it by now.

I'm thinking the same thing. But if Jobs was still around he would've said to figure out how to make it work or don't use it at all. I don't believe that fragmentation is something he wanted.

Right because Jobs could wave a magic wand and make whatever he wanted happen. There are 3 possibilities here: it's an engineering issue, it's a marketing decision or it's a bit of both. Or their might be a 4th possibility: supply constraints and the 5.5" model doesn't sell in the quanitity the 4.7" model does. Anyway I think Steve Jobs did a pretty good job of getting people to spend more money. Remember the black plastic MacBook that was more expensive than its white counterpart?

So you are done. And disgusted.

Because of rumors.
That might not even be true.

WTF. LOL. Grummpy Mom

Yeah tbh it seems like gimmick central ;) Just kidding, but the chances that I'm actually going to change the focus from the foreground to the background, or vice versa, after taking the shot, is based on a very rare occurrence. Also same with "optical" zoom. It's very nice to have the ability to have those features, but it certainty seems like a "power user"/"pro" thing to do, whereby most people would hardly be using it. People will whine and cry all day though, because two camera modules seems like such an upgrade when compared to one.
