Must... resist... urge to be drawn into debates on the Intertubes regarding rumored hardware specs of a product I don't intend to purchase... :D

Seriously folks, Apple wouldn't be pushing the product if it wasn't good. If it was Retina display but couldn't support decent framerates for apps, they wouldn't have released it. Simply far too much money at stake to botch something so simple.

(And unlike most of the competitors, they aren't so desperate to keep their name in the press that they'll release anything they can just so they won't be forgotten...)

I wouldn't be surprised if there were new Time Capsules (and Airports?) tomorrow or soon given the demands of HD video AND the 1-2 week shipping estimates for Time Capsules as of last night.

I just bought a 3TB TC last month...

But 720 suits me fine. Hardly watch big screens anymore.

I like the sound of this! (except the last sentence about listening to his wife - where tech is concerned, forget Tony Danza, I'm the Boss).

You don't understand - she has the conceiled carry permit - she has the 38 Special with water shock hollow points and lazer pointer - can't outrun a shell of that even with Siri navigation  - don't worry, she wouldn't shoot me; she would shoot both of my iPads (1st gen, iPad 2), my computer (AMD Phenom II 1100T, 16GB RAM, Radeon HD 6790, 2 monitors), my iPhone 4, my Laptop (yea, she's seen the video of that dad shooting his daughter's), my netbook, my XBOX360 (Black Edition 120GB with Kinect), and she will probably find some other things not worth it to risk just to have one more geek toy.

It sounds to me like the iPad 3/HD will just be a higher resolution iPad 2 with the A5X being needed to run the higher resolution screen at the same speed as the iPad 2. It could actually be called the iPad 2 HD.

I really hope Apple works it's magic tomorrow as it's got some competition to contend with in the next year with Quad Core Tegra 3 devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and lets not forget Windows 8 tablets!

I'm really hoping that A5X is in the Apple TV and they give it the App Store as this would be a great way for Apple to enter the games and media console market :)

Read over A5S very quick, what does it say? Exactly. ;)

(Hint: your rear end)

Guess I missed something - which is possible because I have ADHD :D - what is the A5S? And what does that have to do with Apple calling the chip on this logic board A5X? Besides, it might be the logic board for the new Apple TV or a revamp of a cheaper iPad 2 line for whatever we know.

Little dissapointing but not surprising.

I have suspected international markets would only see 3G models. Most of Europe won't be getting 4G till 2013 so it makes sense that way.

Dual core will be OK if it's spec bumped.

It seems iPad 4 will be all about the 4's (quad core)... Which again makes sense as a roadmap for the iPad. If they gave us retina, 4g, quad core, better cameras, where would they go with iPad 4?

The one thing I'm not looking forward to is the massive Android Fanboy attacks that are going to erupt because it's not quad core. (even if it turns out peformance is close - matching tegra 3)

I think it's just marketingterms. They obviously are not going to call it A5S, so they're calling it A5X for that reason. My guess is that the A5X will feature in the iPad 3, and that it is a higher-clocked version of the A5. Also, it will have more memory, presumably 1GB.

You might be right on that one. I was just hoping. I guess in about 24h, we will know a little bit more and the day it is available, Ifixit and that other page which tears down processors will tell us who speculated right. ;)

Does this mean iPhone 5 will be dual core also?

The Internet is going to explode with fanboy tirades in about 24 hours....

Which begs the question: why the carrier specific models? I thought they were trying to get away from that.

I was hoping for an iPad that could work with either Verizon or ATT. Decide month by month based on where you are.

My guess, if true, is that they need to leave things available for an "S" model in a year. With all the updates rumored, they need to leave things for another model before the next major version.

re original article

i have a feeling the maggots at att and verizon will suck more profit out of the user and envoke more lame data cap restrictions

I'd guess that they will also support each carrier's 3G bands. I'm an AT&T customer so I'm not that familiar with Verizon but don't all of their LTE phones also work on their 3G network?

The iPhone 4S has support for both 3G technologies in the US (ATT and Verizon).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Do people not realise that a Double-Core A15 chip is better than a Quad-Core A9? Which is hopefully what Apple will be doing

If most apps never make use of more than one core at 100% usage, a faster Dual-Core Cortex A15 will always run faster than a Quad-Core Cortex A9. Quad-Core A6 chip would only be faster if the current app in use would use 3 or more cores. An ARM Cortex A15 is faster than a Cortex A9 at the same clock rate.

The only thing that I've seen is some impressive Games that do use all 4 Cores, but again, if the Video on a Dual-Core A5X really is 20x faster than on the iPad 2, I would think that a faster Dual-Core CPU would be overall better than a slower (per core) Quad-Core CPU.

Verizon - much larger LTE footprint; slower 3G speeds (CDMA) when not in LTE service area. Likely wont work overseas (presuming it's a VZW-only CDMA/VZW-LTE band chipset).

AT&T - much smaller LTE footprint; faster than Verizon on 3G when not in LTE service area. Should work overseas on any GSM 3G network (presuming a GSM/AT&T-LTE band chipset)

For my decision making, there is also the following facts:
I have one of the early unlimited data plans on ATT, though I haven't gone much past 2GB on my worst month yet. If this transfers to the iPad 3, I could have unlimited. And, sometime in the next year or so when LTE comes to my area, I could use that here. Until then, maybe when out of town.

Verizon has LTE where i live. And better support for 3G when traveling. 3G is slower, though, than ATT 3G. And the other limitation of 3G, no voice/data at same time, doesn't apply in the iPad.

No quad core = no sale for me unfortunately.

If they release an iPad with only a dual core processor in 2012, the Android trolls will have a field day on this board.

It seems that LTE chip being used won't have the support for both 3G technologies, the faster GSM and the CDMA. LTE isn't widely available and I think I would want an iPad that would fall back to a faster HSPA+ GSM 3G, plus it would be more compatible worldwide.

Though currently Verizon has more 4G LTE regions, still once you fall outside of the 4G support, then the Verizon iPad would fall back to a slower 3G CDMA network. (Again, it appears that Verizon has faster ping, so loading pages may be not be 3 times faster as the simple speed tests consistantly show)

(Where I live, the only 4G support is Metro PCS, and my iPhone 4S on AT&T's HSPA+ is still 5-10 times faster than any of the 4G Metro PCS phones around here, though I've only tested this several times)

True, but I doubt any Android Tablet would be faster than a Dual-Core iPad 3 in 99% of the time. Only specialized Apps, such as a few games, may run faster on all 4 cores, but if the video on the iPad 3 really will be 20 times faster, who knows?

i really feel that apple is dropping the ball not going quad core. there are already quad core android tablets out there, and many more coming. if they plan on only releasing one iPad this year, they need it to be quad core

Can't wait to see how fast the LTE is.

Battery is taxed massively when you tether on iPhone. (At least on mine it is)

That being said, this time around, I'm probably going wifi anyway (for that lack of disposable income). lol

Curious did u ever use the 3G?

Having cellular data built-in to the iPad is, IMHO, better than tethering off the iPhone. For occasional use it's one thing, but for any substantial use it'll drain the battery of the iPhone along with the iPad. Having the cellular modem in the iPad - along with its huge battery - is better if you're using a lot of data on the go.

And wifi isn't available everywhere.

I agree wifi isn't everywhere and my iPhone battery gets hit hard but is it enough to sign on for a month of paid service?

I mean are we talking a day of usage on vacation ? Or u need a monthly data plan on top of your iPhone data plan

Thanks - just to be its overkill for normal people. For business this is great!!

Data protocols, yes.

Frequencies, No
Activation, No
BS bureaucracy, No
Obscene fees, No
I was really excited about the LTE model until I realized they'll have it locked down like that. I travel a lot worldwide and wanted the flexibility to buy data from different carriers in different countries as I need it. If this isn't possible, I'll stick with the Wi-Fi only model. Disappointing such a great technology is limited by such ********.
