I know you're joking, but I think people who want the best possible iPad should actually want dual core not quad core.

Yup, i was just kidding. I will take Dual Core and better battery life than Quad Core with shorter battery life.

I'm a little disappointed. I'd like to be able to switch between AT&T and Verizon/Sprint for data to try them out. (Actually I really want to use the tmobile prepaid $30/month plan but that seems extremely unlikely-
edit: i know it will work but im not paying $30/month for edge speeds on a new ipad). This would help me decide later this or next year whether I want to pay an ETF and jump to sprint or verizon or just stick it out with at&t for another year when the newer iphones come out.

Maybe I'll get the verizon model regardless.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ... wasn't one of the upcoming ARM chips that everyone was all hot and bothered about a higher clockspeed dual core SOC?

Keeping A5X dual core and boosting the RAM and graphics capability will make sense if they are sticking to dual cores later on. Optimizing for quad core and then switching back to dual core wouldn't make much sense to me.

But I'm not an engineer, I just like to read about my shiny electronic toys on the Intertubes.

Anyway, consider me NOT surprised that they didn't upgrade to quad core, more RAM, more flash storage, LTE and Retina display all in the same model, lol  But when you get about 2/3 of your unrealistic wishlist, it can't be all bad, can it?

Saving my pennies for possible MBP updates and Time Capsule later this year :)

Seems like a suspect story. 1) It left my head spinning w/ all the options which is un-Apple like. 2) There are chips that support both LTE and 3G. I can't see Apple force users to choose LTE or 3G because the user experience would be horrible given that LTE is still really in its infancy in terms of roll out.

This SUCKS! So, if I buy for AT&T in USA I won't be able to switch to Verizon, I won't be able to use it on 3G, and I won't be able to use it at all overseas? WTF!

Talk about FRAGMENTED!

thats really the fault of the carriers.

Is it 2pm PST already?

usually there will be one more additional confirmed true accurate rumor :D once the stocks close for today!

:D

Damn, was hoping for one LTE tablet with choice of carrier.
Any obvious pro's and con's for either network? Price, performance, etc?
Or will I get screwed either way? :(

Verizon - much larger LTE footprint; slower 3G speeds (CDMA) when not in LTE service area. Likely wont work overseas (presuming it's a VZW-only CDMA/VZW-LTE band chipset).

AT&T - much smaller LTE footprint; faster than Verizon on 3G when not in LTE service area. Should work overseas on any GSM 3G network (presuming a GSM/AT&T-LTE band chipset)

And, if rumor is true, there may be a world-mode 3G-only model which would have a GSM/CDMA world radio like the iPhone 4S but no LTE mode.

The rumor suggests there's room in the iPad 3 for ONE radio chipset: A VZW CDMA/LTE version, an AT&T GSM/LTE chipset, or a CDMA/GSM chipset. I don't know if anyone yet produces a single GSM/CDMA/LTE chip.

I don't get it - u don't have wifi or an iPhone to tether? U must have a lot of disposable income

Battery is taxed massively when you tether on iPhone. (At least on mine it is)

That being said, this time around, I'm probably going wifi anyway (for that lack of disposable income). lol

Having cellular data built-in to the iPad is, IMHO, better than tethering off the iPhone. For occasional use it's one thing, but for any substantial use it'll drain the battery of the iPhone along with the iPad. Having the cellular modem in the iPad - along with its huge battery - is better if you're using a lot of data on the go.

And wifi isn't available everywhere.

Seriously, when does Apple really check everything off the wish list in one model upgrade? They never do. They always save something for next time, much to the disappointment of blogging sites. But they have record breaking sales anyway.
And that's not a knock on them because I have an iPad 2 and will be upgrading right away.

You forgot the rumored camera upgrades as well (even if you don't care for them, something to consider). This whole week I've been thinking OK something has to be held back, something has got to give. Either it won't be LTE or it won't be quadcore. Something is going to be held back... your guess is as good as any, we will have to wait and see.

Apple has to keep you wanting more, as long as its a faster dual core 1.5 ghz I'll still be happy but I will have a little envy of the quad core tablets.

I'm sure whatever happens, we're all going to do the usual silent 'OMFG' dance while sitting at our desks hitting the refresh button on the Apple store, just in case it's launched as available...'NOW' (we all know it wont be but we'll still be refreshing like mad).

Here's my predictions (disclaimer:these are most likely complete crap)

  • Retina Display
  • Slightly upgraded CPU, but not a Quad Core
  • More RAM (1GB? It's cheap enough now so I dont see why not)
  • I'd like to see a bump up in storage but dont think it'll happen
  • Better cameras
  • I'd like a sound upgrade, but given that we've seen that its still only got 1 speaker vent it probably wont happen.
  • New case that covers the entire iPad
  • A 'cheap' model of some sort. I just cant see the retina screen being cost effective on the entry model, so maybe we'll see the 16gig iPad 2 stay around for a while.

That is all. :D

I agree there. When I tether off my phone it kills my battery! I'm still on the fence here about to do if I should get the LTE Model? Do I really want to pay 30 dollars more a month for faster speeds when I'm already paying 45 with AT&T 4GB/Tether option? Or will those extra 30 dollars be worth the hassle of not having my phone die after usage and getting a faster download speed for web use?
