I'm hoping for a souped-up PowerBook.

I need a more powerful machine so I can work from remote locations, but still have something powerful enough to do intensive Photoshop work on.

Because a new Dell and a new top-of-the-line Power Mac just doesn't suffice. :p

Yeah, I'm hoping for new PowerBooks too. The difference between the 12 inch PowerBook and the iBooks is ridiculous at the moment.

LOL - well, I wasn't expecting to have to be on the road, but I will be spending a lot of time with my family in the coming months and need to be able to work from the road and actually use my freedom of working from home - when not at home.

I would be interested in testing out a DC G5. I am on the fence about believing that there will be a G5 mini, however it would be cool (or HOT).

If my current G5 Dual 2.0 dosen't stop having Kernel Panics, I may seek a replacement for it.

I just got dizzy reading that

so, if you are at the coffee shop near your home, can you VPN into your home so you can work from there as if you were at home, or would that be like working from work? :D

Powermac G5 Mini

I'd like a Powermac G5 Mini. I'd buy it even if it were double the current Mac Mini height as long as it runs cool & quiet, uses 3.5" SATA hard drives, has one PCI slot, and at least an ATI 9600Pro on board.

This is my realistic, albeit idealised, Mac Mini update:

nVidia HyperTransport southbridge or ATI/ULi PCIe southbridge (USB2, Ethernet, SATA, IDE, etc)

Is there such a thing as SATA 2.5" laptop hard drives?

I'd have the RAM checked if I were you...

That's on my list of things I want Apple to check. Since the memory that is in it is all stock from Apple.

The actual codes that I am getting in the panic appear to be CPU related though. Perhaps my baby is overheating ? hope not, but it is possible.

I'm not too fussed about a G5 mini, I somewhat doubt we'll see that at the Paris expo, what I would like to see though is a Mini with at least 64MB VRAM, not the horrible standard 32MB, I don't want to run games, but maybe some HD trailers that don't play all choppy (not always, but it has happened to me).

:D

Updates...

i haven't looked over the Intel roadmap, but does it make sense to move the mini or eMac to a G5 chip and then to Intel? the G5 is a 64bit processor and currently Intel doesn't have a low power consumer 64bit processor; do they? i wouldn't think that Apple would move a platform to 64bit only to turn around and go back to a higher GHz 32bit processor.
my thought is that the mini and eMac will go to the latest and greatest M based processor from Intel (not necessarily at Paris Expo). the iBooks will do the same shortly after. the powerbooks will get G4 updates, hopefully the new dual core FreeScale chip. PowerMacs will get the new dual core G5 chip.
after Intel has dual core M based chips the pbs will move to that as will the iMacs. the PowerMacs and XServes will stay dual core G5s until Intel has a dual core 64bit chip that can be reliably used and still keep these workstations/servers somewhat affordable.

don't get me wrong, i'd love to see G5 mini's and pbs. but i don't think it would make sense to go to a 64bit chip and then step back to a 32bit chip...

just my $.02 ;)

Why does every second post in this thread claim that it is ridiculous to have a G5 mini while the PBs are still G4

If Apple can build a G5 mini, they will. Do you really think people will say sth like "I'd rather have a Dell laptop than a G4 PB, because the mini has a G5!"

Silly.

Well, you're talking about a company that purposely restricts the GHz rating on their chips so they make logical families. Case in point-- it's easy as hell for them to put a 1.67 GHz G4 in an iBook, and do it at essentially the same price point. But they don't. So, the short answer is, if dealing with the same type of computer (laptop vs. laptop or desktop vs. desktop) they will never leap frog the processor type or speed. I think your point begins to make sense when talking about the difference of a desktop to laptop, though: a faster desktop is generally assumed. There are problems with this, though ... MARGINS.

The G5 is going to be more expensive than the G4. I'm sure Apple pays about $30 - $50 a chip in bunches of 10k for a 1.42 GHz G4 7447/a. I doubt that a G5 970fx is going to be that cheap at 1.6 GHz. It may not be much-- maybe only $20 more? But that's $20 less on an already low margin product.

Then, the issue of having Apple's top of the line Powerbook, at $2,200 to $2,800 a pop, being slower than the $500 to $700 desktop comes into play. So, the simple answer is that there will not be a G5 Mini until the Powerbook is running faster G4's.

At least that's my take on it. :)

The original source of this rumor is MOSR, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Here, Here. Those people make the stupidest unfounded predictions, change what they said after the update to make it correct, and brag about it. (Tiger will not come out in April, Tiger has been announced for April 29th as predicted). They also say "grapevine" too much.

The G5 mini is just not happening at this point in time. The next Mac mini will be Intel.

I can't believe you can say the G5 processor is dead. If Apple hadn't announced the switch to Intel everybody would be saying the G5 is the fastest processor in the world, not to mention everybody still wishing to get a G5 PowerBook.
As far as I know a G5 still smokes a Pentium 4-based computer any day.

Pretty much man. The day after Apple announced the switch to Intel, even the Pentium 4 became more loved then the G5 around this place.

A G5 WILL NOT smoke a Pentium 4. A Pentium 4 is hitting close to 4 Ghz now and the G5 IS STILL stuck at 2.7Ghz.

Look I have a G5 in my iMac and I find the performance to be outstanding, but if you look around this place, you will see that the G5 and all PowerPC's are considered dead, outdated technology around these boards.

I personally see the PBs getting updated, and the Mini getting an 8GB drive and the normal iPod an 80 GB drive.

AGREED.

PowerBook:
-- 1.67 / 1.8 GHz G4 7448
-- DDR2 Memory?
-- 200 MHz System Bus

iPod Mini
-- 4 GB dropped.
-- 6 GB moves down to $199.
-- 8 Gb added at $249
-- Add color screen. Maybe only to 8gb version?

iPod
-- Does anyone buy regular ipods anymore? Maybe they add an 80gb version?

Mac Mini
-- nothing

PowerMac
-- 2 x Dual Core 970fx Antares @ 2.7 GHz $2,999
-- 1 x Dual Core 970fx Antares @ 2.5 GHz $2,499
-- 1 x Dual Core 970fx Antares @ 2.3 GHz $1,999

Yes, I would like one too....though the PCI they can drop for me..but 3.5" SATA at 160GB is minimum and ATi 9600 or even the Fx 5200 will do just fine :D :D :D

if a Mac Mini G5 comes, it'll be right next to my iBook G4 1.42GHz

That way I could have a G3 -- iMac 500MHz, G4 -- iBook 1.42GHz -- and a G5 (doubtful :() Mac Mini!

Wouldn't that be G R E A T.

Doubt it'll happen though :(

Since we are about a month out from Expo Paris, it's getting very exciting. A new Power Mac will be nice. Will try not to have any certain expectations so that I won't be disappointed.

Forecast

I see:

- Updated Powerbooks before end of year (going Intel mid-2006 aka WWDC)
- Updated PowerMacs before they go Intel in 2007
- Updated iMacs in late 2006 or early 2007
- Updated Mac minis and iBooks in early 2006
