Just out of interest: what makes you "bored as hell with the current design and form factor"?
I genuinely don't understand... do you get bored with all the other devices in your life? e.g. DSLRs, car, microwave, etc. If Canon or Nikon released cameras in different shapes
Why do you need a new design after 2 years? what's the incentive?
I understand desiring a phone for new features, which will make working with the phone easier or better - but for a new shape...?
I want a new design because I enjoy them. I like having and holding something new that looks different. Not really for you to understand about my preferences for physical design but since you asked. For other devices like a...microwave? For a microwave I see it as more of a tool and I don't need to replace every year/2 years. Car? If I had the money I would change every year to a better/faster model. For a phone? I want it to look and feel new once in a while. I use it everyday, I feel it in my hands everyday I look at it everyday.

I don't look at a microwave at my home and use it constantly and I don't have a DSLR. I want a new design when I want a new design it just so happens that Apple had been producing new designs every 2 years. If they produced a new design every year, I would get it every year do you see? Some people want faster chips and memory. Some people want new design and form factor. Hope that answered your question.

Just add 6 different lens with different focal lengths :) would cost that much.

Shrink the phone and it won't be a big deal. The Plus is just too big in its current design.
Love the Plus :) wouldn't go smaller.

Very innovative. Couldn't make a waterproof phone with a headphone jack but Sony and Samsung have been doing it for years... now they cant add the camera to regular sized phones?

I don't call this courage, I call it incompetence.
Lol. So mean. Apple is doing some awesome work with processors etc.

yep, another "band aid" for what used to "just work"
Yes new equipment and old equipment often have adaption needs. Been through it many times myself. Found an old serial to USB adapter just to day.

Several ways to get a signal into that legacy AUX jack and charge at the same time. You'll get it handled eventually.

Narrow the phone by 1/8 of a inch, shorten the height by 1/8 of a inch. Now pay close attention, this is the VERY IMPORTANT PART, make the screen edge to edge and from the top to the bottom...........BOOM!!!!

It's a winner!!

All this info is free..... Now, just do it.

Good post . But the honor 8 has dual cameras and it's a pretty small device.
Yeah but still a little bigger than the iPhone 7.
Dimensions Honor 8: 5.73 x 2.80 x 0.29 inches (145.5 x 71 x 7.45 mm

iPhone 7: 5.44 inches (138.3 mm) X 2.64 inches (67.1 mm) x 0.28 inch (7.1 mm)

iPhone 7 Plus: 6.23 inches (158.2 mm) x 3.07 inches (77.9 mm) x 0.29 inch (7.3 mm)

So it sort of sits in between the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in size with the 7 Plus's thickness. That might make a difference in the ability to cram dual lenses in. Or not. Hard to tell.

Phil made it sound like little elves had toiled away sweating every millimeter to give us what we want, and in the end wiped their damp foreheads, shook their heads sadly, and declared bravely that something had to go, so it had to be the headphone jack. :p Courage. Apple elves haz it. ;)

I don't understand why you're so dense? For me I won't get a new microwave oven that looks almost identical to the one I had. Even if it's a completely utilitarian product, it's a plus point if someone comes up with an attractive design thats different from what it was or what's available out there. And there is much the iphone design can be improved. The thick border around the screen for example.

I personally don't, want an edge-to-edge screen. Like 90% (I made that % up but I'm sure it's close) of other phone owners, I put my phone in a case... it's difficult enough to get my finger on the edges as is (that's not to say I wouldn't mind less bezel at the top and bottom).

and even worse with the so called waterproofing, the warranty doesn't cover water damage. o_O

Is there a phone that DOES cover water damage? Plus, no phone that I know of offers "waterproofing." Several do, however, offer "water resistance."

Then just buy a different phone brand every year. Or just change the case. I guess I'm just different, I want the product I use the most to be reliable and familiar. When I buy a product... car... phone... shirt... microwave... etc. I buy it because I like how it functions, and how it looks. My mind doesn't change in a year. I bought my current car (Mini Cooper), because I like how it looks, and I like how it performs. I bought it 5 years ago, and I still dig it. I have an iPhone 5s, I bought it because I liked it. I still do. I'll be buying a 7 because I like the new camera (I wish it was in the 5 form factor, but it's not). But this whole change-for-change's sake is so counter intuitive to good design.

Peace.

That is certainly one way to approach design.

On the other hand, the Porsche 911 took another approach over it's 50 year run...

Big let down personally with thr 7 (i had the 6 plus before). I have always had an iphone since the 3gs days, but thr 7 has been the biggest let down by far and i saw no reason to upgrade from the 6 plus. So i though id buy a s7 edge yesterday (loving the phone so far lets see how it goes!) before i get a load of hate its only temporary till the iphone 8 comes out- fingers crossed its worth an upgrade. But s7 edge wipes the floor with iphone 7!'

Even for Porsches you can tell they're different year models. Rolex watches may be better examples. But you're expected to own a luxury watch or a car for much longer than a cell. I'm wondering if there is a relationship between length of ownership and wanting the design to evolve at a faster clip.

Thanks for your reply.
I certainly understand the desire for improved design and form, changes in hardware and software which make the device better for the job; each iphone has had things I wished they would improve or change.
But despite your detailed answer I'm still wondering how one can get bored with a form factor, and desire a different shape just for the sake of a new shape and look.

2 follow on questions - if you don't mind:
- Would you have been happier with an iphone7 with a radically new design, but hardly any internal improvements or new functions?
- You say the microwave is a tool for you, then as what do you see the smartphone? Isn't it just a tool with way more functions than a microwave or screwdriver?

I like the screen size too, keep that the same. But the head, chin and bezels? Axe them.

No need for responding like this. It's unattractive.

Yes, of course it's a plus point if a new generation of a device - with new & improved features - has an attractive design.
I was however wondering about rejecting a new generation outright - seemingly solely because of its close resemblance to a previous generation.
I also need improved and new features, however for me the attractiveness of a device lies in it's function, design and elegance of use, not in its external novelty alone, its difference to previous.
I see the the phone as a utilitarian product, a toolbox for work/leisure. I wonder how many carpenters or plumbers get "bored" with their set of tools and complain that they aren't being offered radically new designs of hammers and wrenches.

Maybe it's not a question of a novelty alone but a question of a better design. Many find the design introduced by the iPhone 6 ugly and boring. It may not be the issue in a case of a screwdriver but it is the issue with the device you use for leisure and see it every single day.

Also some do like changes and novelty just for the sake of novelty, some do not care of the phones and have other novelties in life everyday. Some do not like changes at all and would like to stick with something they already like and know.

Nah, next year will be the 7S. It'll look practically identical.

If you're hoping for a radical redesign, point your eyes to 2018.
The rumors have already started gathering steam that the 10th anniversary iPhone will be one of most radical design changes, finally going OLED in an all new all glass design with the top and bottom bezels gone and the home button.
