Here's an idea...let's focus on and enjoy the iPhone 7. Why is everyone always so worried about what's coming out NEXT YEAR? The iPhone 7 hasn't even come out yet and we're already criticizing the next one? This takes all the fun out of enjoying this years phone. Just leave it alone.

Although I agree with you regarding exuberating optimism on the iPhone 7, which I'm looking forward to myself. I see your a new forum member, the negativity is very prevalent on this site, try and adjust the best you can, you can't change how others post or react. Welcome to Macrumors though.

Well then, they're incredibly stupid. I'll never buy an iPhone in that case and neither will a LOT of other people.
For all the people like you who won't buy a phone because of lacking headphone jack there is another person who will. Apple will do just fine and make billions like they always do. Of course I don't know what will happen in 10 years but this model of iPhones will sell very well and make them a lot of money.

There were people who said the same thing about dvd drives. What happened? Usb ports? Matte screens on laptops?

Every year it's the same crap Apple is doomed because they did this or that. What's happened? They've made billions and billions over and over again and they'll continue to do so until something else comes out that people want more.

It's annoying hearing this crap every year, if you don't like it don't buy it. If everyone truly hates it and don't buy it then something will change, that obviously hasn't happened yet.

I don't understand what the big deal is removing the headphone jack, serious question ?

I'm not buying an iPhone 7, still loving my 6 plus but the phone comes with the adaptor. You won't even notice a difference just use the adaptor.
Because audio quality!! That's probably the response you'll get over and over again. Bluetooth compared to wired sucks, yes it does no doubt about it. That's a stupid excuse because the digital from lightening would be higher quality then the headphone jack. If you don't want to use the included headphones or Bluetooth or an adapter or buy new headphones when they come out then don't buy it. Upset you can't charge your phone while listening to wired headphones? Don't buy it.

Really. Out of most large corporations Apple probably has the most streamlined product line. That is why so many people complain of long Mac upgrades. Because Apple doesn't want to have 20 macs on the market at one time. But yet they don't want to run into extereme part stock overage.

You know that obsolescence of products is driven by their part stock bin. If macOS or iOS doesn't support an earlier model it has more to due with parts availability then technical ability. Look at the dumb compatible macOS 10.12 hardware. So many macs like the Xserve from 09 are more powerful then a 2010 Mac mini.

I don't want to derail thread but I disagree. Apple has crept towards more product branches with few of them seemingly more fit for purpose. Other than that, absolutely on same page.

Certainly don't think we will see the next iPhone "8" as rumored. Glass was tried and found inferior to aluminum (again, ceramic or kevlar seems more likely... really anything tough and transparent to radio waves). Smaller bezels are possible but whole front side screen, again no; need surface area for sensors, camera, earphone slot, etc. Wireless charging might be an option but it is slower than wired charging and the induction coils will add size/weight to phone. Not sure why this is such a big deal to some people... it isn't even a new idea going back to Nikola Tesla in the 1890's.

This is what really sucks about the current Apple. They make design decisions based on profit concerns. There would be not way in hell Jobs would not out a high end camera on the mid-size phone it was technically possible. He would charge for it, but he would not cripple the product just to "differentiate the high-end line". Galaxy S8, here I come...

I am surprised Apple sells any phones at this point. Seems like every year, people make these same comments and are going to switch to Android.

I think the reason you see fragmentation is because of what I said above. Why in the hell is the 13" MacBook Pro still around. It can't be selling well. They have excess parts and unlike when Steve job who would have just scrapped it Tim Cook reports to share holders. They overbuilt/bought so now they will milk it till they cannot technology wise. It's the only product with a CD/DVD drive for Christs sake.

On paper at least, both of these cameras really do sound like the best iPhone cameras yet, so everyone upgrading to either model should be happy.

Yes, the Plus model gives you some zoom and software bokeh, but both have the same new 1.8 lens, image stabilization, and RAW support, which are all considerable upgrades. Looking forward to seeing some photos soon.

Really?! The plus is a pro model just as what Steve approved over the years. So a person should spend another $120 and only get a bit more screen? Is that worth $120??? Get real.

I'm waiting for apple to integrate a 360 vr camera so that vr becomes commonplace.
You know... If a techy person could use the front and back cameras at the same time you could almost get a 360° view.

Everybody needs to just relax. it seems that everyone has their own agenda and just wants Apple to please their own needs. Apple is a business. If everyone got their way, people would get whatever size phone they want with every feature with 256gb storage for $299. Guess what - life doesn't work that way. If Apple thinks it can charge more for the extra specs it will. If people don't want to spend an extra $120 for the extra features, Apple will add more or charge less. Take an economics class for a change. It is about consumer behavior. Not that difficult.

I simply object to referencing the Plus model as the "high-end" model. High-end tends to imply more than just higher cost. It implies a more desirable and even more sophisticated or deluxe product. The plus model's size allows Apple to pack more into it, but I consider it less desirable. That makes it non-high-end, IMHO, regardless of the price. It's simply too huge to meet my needs - I'd actually prefer the non-plus even if the Plus cost less. The manageability is important to me.

If Apple decided to add a dual camera to later non-plus models but charged a premium for that version, I'd consider purchasing that "high-end" non-plus model.

Honestly I don't even really care about price that much. I'd gladly pay the price of the Plus model to get the dual camera system on my 4.7" phone. I just use my phone too much throughout the day to not have a battery case and the Plus models are comically large with battery cases. I hope this rumor isn't true as I'm really hoping we will get a less gimped 4.7" iPhone next year.

This is incorrect. For tiny sensors, the image is diffraction limited. They're already blurry. A larger aperture reduces diffraction blur.

You can see it in larger dSLRs when you get blurry images at F/8 and smaller. But they have large 7 micron pixels. For tiny 1micron pixels on cell phone cameras, you are already at the diffraction limit.
I understand diffraction. Sometimes diffraction is preferred to gain depth of field. That is all I was saying.

quite a bit off topic, but since you asked...

how about trying to charge it in a car that has an aux jack in the stereo but no bluetooth when doing a 20 hour road trip? there's one example
If I did 20-hour road trips often in a car with no Bluetooth and no USB power/audio input, I'd invest in an Apple Lightning dock. Not just because it would allow me to charge and play music at the same time, but also because I'd get really tired of disconnecting both the power cable and the audio cable every time I stopped to take a break, or a leak, or a meal, or a picture. Even with my iPhone 6 Plus, I'd get the lightning dock, just for the convenience.

My car has both Bluetooth and USB input, so it's not a problem I have.

On the same day the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus became available for pre-order, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research report outlining his expectations for a dual rear camera in next year's iPhone model.

According to Kuo, cost considerations and a niche appeal for the dual camera, which is found only on the larger iPhone 7 Plus model this year, mean that the feature is likely to remain exclusive to "high-end" models in 2017 as well. Presumably this means the dual camera would again appear only on so-called "iPhone 8 Plus" models should Apple continue to offer similar product lineups.

As for what improvements can be anticipated for the dual camera in 2017, Kuo indicates that optical image stabilization (OIS) is likely to be added to the telephoto camera. In the iPhone 7 Plus, only the wide-angle camera has OIS.While 2017 would normally be considered an "S cycle" for the iPhone that would focus on internal improvements rather than changes to the external appearance of the device, rumors have suggested Apple is embarking on a major "iPhone 8" or "iPhone X" upgrade as the iPhone turns ten years old. Apple is reportedly looking to move to a glass body and a flexible edge-to-edge OLED display that curves around the sides of the device. The 2017 iPhone may also see the removal of the iconic Home button and perhaps include features such as wireless charging and an iris scanner.

Meh...

Well, if Apple insists on continuing to only offer the best cameras on the phablet Plus versions, I may be holding on to my 6 for even longer than planned.

Hope this rumor is wrong..

What!! Larger aperture lenses means nothing about image quality (read-sharpness). In fact often smaller aperture lenses avoid the softness and aberrations that larger aperture lenses have. The advantage of larger apertures is simply to let in more light. That is what people pay the big bucks for, as well as the unique look of shallow depth of field.
In regards to the second camera, no, software zoom would be nowhere near as good as it. The slower aperture means nothing in good light, in fact could be preferred since there could be better sharpness all over the frame due to greater depth of field, albeit could become a handicap in low light.

The duel linX camera which Apple use tries to bridge the gap. It won't get to DSLR quality but it most certainly is getting to the standard of 2009 DSLRs.

Here is the original functions of the LinX camera. The 3D mapping looks very interesting:

How many iPhone models/versions did a Jobs led Apple release each cycle... 1. Not to say the one-size fits all approach for phones was the best, just that Jobs seemed much more focused on making the best product for each category rather than trying to appease every niche.

Actually, Phil said the major reason was for space. I'm sure they could make a waterproof phone with headphone jack, but they don't want the jack there to begin with.

They want the headphone jack removal pain point to be mull by the time they release the iPhone X. They were willing to deal with the flak this year for the 7, but I'm sure they don't want the negativity when they release their mythical new device next year. It will be old news by then.

Yup, more space for the larger taptic engine... which is sooooo much more important to the majority of users than the aux jack, except it really isn't...

It's because people have a completely unrealistic ideal of what they expect Apple should do. Or more likely, that nothing Apple can do will ever satisfy them.

As far as I'm concerned, the unprecedented performance of the A-series chips is more 'innovative' than a slightly different shell. But you'll find that a lot of the naysayers here don't actually have anything positive to say about Apple. It makes you wonder why they even came here. Pretty sad; just to exude all of their time and energy hating on a company.

Or it could be that people are disappointed in what Apple announced with the 7?

No aux jack, expensive and.or kludgy options to replace it, dual-cameras only on the phablet version, rumored 4k60fps didn't get included....

For $600+ some just aren't seeing the value, and are already hoping for what they really want to be available 12mo from now...

Well look, it's not going to get any better. Guaranteed. Things aren't going to go the way you want them to. Everybody here can guarantee this. What you want from an Apple product is just going to get worse and worse, regardless of how much you stamp your feet about it.

So you have two choices:

1) Accept the inevitable and come to the realisation that Apple products will never be right for you. Go to the greener grass and use something that you prefer.

2) Accept the inevitable and come to the realisation that Apple products will never be right for you. Remain on this site regardless and continue to moan about features you know won't ever be changed.

Or..

Very innovative. Couldn't make a waterproof phone with a headphone jack but Sony and Samsung have been doing it for years... now they cant add the camera to regular sized phones?

I don't call this courage, I call it incompetence.
Can you point me to these waterproof phones? All i found is water resistant phones.

All valid points except the one about the iPhones audiojack. I don't think it's a bad move. They can use the space better and they included a adapter for free, which is a new lol. But yeah, charging it in the car + connecting it to a aux will be a pain and you'll need another adapter...

The space that used to belong to the aux jack, now is taken up by a larger taptic engine. That was the change. The cameras are on the opposite side (top) of the phone. The battery isn't significantly larger, the improved battery life is mostly due to the new A10 processor. I'm not sure what real advantage the larger taptic engine will provide that really justifies crippling the iPhone 7 to the point where it can't walk and chew gum (use headphones and charge) at the same time w/o expensive and/or kludgy adaptor combinations.

It should be obvious by now that Apple is going wireless and wants to make the iPhone waterproof which would necessitate the removal of the Lightning port. I wouldn't purchase any Lightning headphone knowing this nor should anyone else.

And they will lose customers that have no interest in wireless headphones because of it.

I've never had a BT earpiece or headset last longer than 6 months. I don't abuse my gear... I have a walkman and plenty of other gear, including radios, cameras, etc, older than many people here, but wireless ear-things tend to self-destruct in months. Way too expensive and unreliable for me to depend on. If Apple makes that the only headset option moving forward, they'll lose my future business.
