Why would Apple knowingly divert dual-SIM inventory from a market it knows it will sell (China) to a market where consumers can't even afford iPhone SE (India)?

New phones always have long lead times. Maybe when production is smoothed out, dual-SIM will roll out worldwide. Initially, it makes sense to limit to China.

I am amused at these rather ignorant responses. As if, most people in US ( as an example ) could afford iPhones were they not subsidized by carriers or not have payment plans!

If customers in India have similar options, instead of buying devices outright, the iPhone ( and other similar devices ) would be a non-issue there as well.

Back on topic, I'd love to be able to get a US-market-based dual-sim iPhone. The inconvenience of lugging 2 devices is a real pain point!

Not sure why you need to spread fake information. Even Amazon in India offers monthly payment plans with all the major banks.

Do you want to try again with more fake news?

Apple sold 800,000 iPhones in India (2017), far below the Samsung, Oppo, Oneplus, Xiaomi, etc., mainly because of the Indian government's stance. Some of the better selling smartphones are more expensive than the iPhone X!

India and China have restrictive trade barriers that focus on keeping the locals employed; if not these products are taxed to death! This resulted in iPhone sales dropping from a high 3.2 million to the low numbers (800K) last year, just SE. They don't sell enough iPhone 7, 8 and X.

Apple did not even get the permit to open an Apple Store in India if Apple did not produce (assemble) their iPhones in India. These stores are now in the works, now that that hurdle has been crossed. Most multinational companies that sell products in India have to produce/assemble their products in India to date, or pay the higher tariffs.

The “middle class” in India can’t even afford a motorbike. It’s a fake middle class as evidenced by the fact Apple sold fewer than 1 million phones in the first half of 2018.

Apple doesn't down-sell their products; i.e., the cheapest iPhone is the SE and it costs ~$320. You can get an Indian made smartphone (Micromax, Karbonn, etc.) for less than $50, and the low-end Chinese and Korean smartphones from about $85. The high end smartphones selling in India do go as high as ~$1800! Yes, much more than the highest configuration iPhone X! The monthly payment for a 24-month lease on an iPhone X is more than $65, yet there are enough Indians to buy them, not in high volumes.

Just the fact that the enormous volumes sold at the lower end means that the median selling price of a smartphone is about half of the selling price in China and a third of the USA prices!

About 120 million smartphones and 160 feature million phones were sold in 2017 in India - the poor still want a means of communication, and the cellphone companies are making them available at every economic level.

India's literacy rate is under 75%. Only 88% of the population has access to drinking water. Less than 85% of Indians have access to electricity. Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India.

Chinese consumers can comfortably buy an iPhone while Indians are worrying about basic health and rape. Yes, there are a lot more people in India. Most Indians can't afford a smartphone let alone an iPhone.

It sucks, but it is what it is. India isn’t ready for Apple yet.

Wrong! Apple does as well in India as the effort it put in - given the government restrictions regarding local production.

Now that issue is behind, the Apple Stores will open in the major metro areas.

Indians are paying more for super expensive android smartphones (more than $1500) already. The ecosystem for Apple is still growing and the Apple Stores are going to increase the sales of the next generation of iPhones in multiples (of 100s or more).

Also, there is a huge market in India for large phones, so the iPhone SE will not cut it any more; not even the 6S plus. So, the upcoming phablet iPhones from Apple are going to be wonderful for Indians.

On one hand, that is true. On the other hand, you get expensive roaming charges if your US SIM card is used in Europe.

Anyone savvy enough to have two sim cards won't be using their US number while overseas. They'll buy a foreign sim card and use that number and then ditch it after their departure.

Wasn't the rumor that they would have a SIM/eSIM combo except in China where it would have dual SIM. This doesn't seem to mean we won't get dual SIM dual standby only that in China it will requite two physical SIM cards.

Latest rumours confirms that, since Apple wont be getting e-Sim working with all Chinese carriers. So everyone gets Dual Sim ( eSim + Sim ) as standard feature, and China's 6.1" gets dual physical sim.

Huawei might surpass Apple in sales because the latter's strategists are not in sync with the times. With the increase in air travel alone and people opting to separate work from personal communication, there is a high demand for unlocked dual sim phones.

Probably because it's not a popular feature in North America

The reason Dual SIM phones are not popular in the US is because the carriers made it that way, By eliminating dual SIM phones, it did not eliminate the need for 2 lines for many people who have a separate work and personal phones. But US carriers knew that if they didn't provide the dual SIM phones, they could get the US market used to the idea of needing 2 phones - which is more money for them.

And they have clearly been successful by the look of some of these responses.

Dual Sim Apple phone's would be a game changer for asia not only china. I mean I have read about the phones being sold in asia are mostly dual sim. Neat concept.

There is a big difference in how news that negatively affects the country's image is broadcast - without censorship in the UK and rarely published in Chine.
