I have been having freezing issues as well with the DVD player and also when I try to burn discs occasionally with Toast. It freezes up and requires a restart.

That's funny. I decided i'd figure out how to get my Simpsons movie DVD into itunes to put onto my new nano and when I inserted the disk, the disk spun up and BAM - Kernel Panic.

Power cycled and was fine on the reboot. I have a 2.2 SR with 4GB of ram also.

on the apple discussion forums apparently this happens to every SR Macbook with 4GB of ram and when not much ram is left free. I get it every time i insert a DVD.

I tried calling apple last night but the wait was too long, it seems to be a driver issue and calling apple hasn't helped any users so far. I have been sending error reports to apple a few times last night to get their attention. Apparently people have been talking to apple about this issue since early december and nothing has been done. How do people normally get their attention to fix these kind of obvious flaws?

Wow, it just did it with 1.5GB of RAM free.

This is a really serious issue, I'd imagine those that run into it during actual use would have important documents or whatever open.

Looking at the error, the driver seems to do something weird with the system stack.

I hope Apple can fix this quickly.

For the record, I used "The Simpsons Movie" to do this.

I tried playing a DVD Video_TS file (From Russia With Love) that I had on my file server and it played just fine. 1.9GB free out of 4GB according to Activity Monitor.

I'll try an actual disc in a little while...

.
After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our bug database under the original Bug ID# 5719209. The original bug number being used to track this duplicate issue can be found in the State column, in this format: Duplicate/OrigBug#.

Yeah, I'm getting this issue happening when I'm running no other programs and also when I'm running more programs. At this point I can't even run MacTheRipper either. It's like my DVD drive has taken over any of the funcionality of my MacBook.:(

well i'mg lad apple is at least aware of this issue but its always been around, this should have been fixed in 10.5.2.

had a few updates since the original problem so tried my dvd application again and now it works!? i can't recreate the problem, so thinking apple had sent me a fix in one of the updates i had a look in the update log. couldn't find anything to do with dvd wierd?!

There have been no updates since I first found the problem (two days ago).

It can't be fixed.

You're probably not filling up the memory enough.

boo...

this happens to me too
every other time i insert the DVD and the scary gray screen shows up
only reason why my macbook has ever crashed
i do have 4 gb ram from crucial

Me too.

This has happened several times too. I thought I was the only one.

SR Macbook 2.2ghz, 4GB ram from Crucial, DVD Player does a hard crash of my MP when a DVD is inserted.

This does not happen every time, only sometimes, but often enough to annoy me.

From this thread, workarounds seem to be:

1. Reboot OSX to free up RAM before inserting a DVD.

Can someone test if the following two methods are crash free?

2. (unconfirmed) Launch DVD Player BEFORE inserting a DVD.

3. (unconfirmed) Turn off Autoplay in DVD Player preferences. Manually launch DVD player AFTER inserting a DVD.

I took my RAM out and tried it, it works fine again. I think it might be the Crucial RAM.

While I also have Crucial RAM, I think the issue is more the fact that you have so much RAM.

Removing RAM will stop the problem happening because the problem only shows if you have ~4GB of RAM and you are filling it up.

If the RAM was faulty (which I don't believe such a large amount of RAM distributed internationally could possibly be), then other issues would show up - not just a specific issue since Leopard came out.

Is there anybody here who has has the DVD player crash

- with less than 4GB of ram, of any brand,

OR

- with 4GB of any brand EXCEPT crucial?

Thank you RedTomato. I was just about to ask the same thing. I'm selling my Crucial RAM and considering getting a different brand. That, or just selling the MacBook.

The ram is fine, I have tested it multiple times, it is a known bug. Just have to ride it out.

i have buffalo ram and the same thing happens. the best way to get this fixed is call apple and tell them about it. i'm calling them right now, this is a rediculous bug and they need to fix this.

Ok, I now have a SOLUTION for you guys:

I talked to an apple product specialist for about an hour trying to track down the problem. We made a new user account and dvd player was working fine under high ram usage. We tracked the problem down to a Core Graphics preference. If you remove this preference, the problem should go away. I don;t know if this is a long term fix, but it works for me right now.

Here is what you do:

1. Navigate to your Finder. Go to "users" then into your home folder (so whatever name you have for it. Then go to "Library" and then to "Preferences".

2. Ok, now that you are in the Preferences folder find a file called "com.apple.CoreGraphics.plist". Delete this file and reboot your computer.

3. Open up Activity Monitor and try to use a lot of ram and try to hit a number like 1.3Gb free or something. I used a massive 32-bit color file in Photoshop and added a gradient to it and it drained down my ram nice and quick. Now try to open up DVD Player and see if it works.

Again, DELETE THIS FILE AND REBOOT!

Macintosh HD/Users/(your short username)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.CoreGraphics.plist

fixing it?

UPDATE:
Deleting the preferences worked temporarily, but I got a kernel panic again today.

Is anyone having issues burning discs or anything like that? I can't burn a DVD in Toast to save my life. I have been able to burn CD-RWs but not a DVD.

Sounds like a hardware issue (unless you have a combo drive, which is unable do burn DVDs)...
