Sounds like a hardware issue (unless you have a combo drive, which is unable do burn DVDs)...
No, I have the Superdrive. I'd give up on this damn laptop only I'd have to take at least a $200+ loss for having it for a month and them releasing a newer version. Looks like it's going to Apple while I'm in Europe for 2 months.

SR MacBook Kernel Panics with DVD player!

I have had 1 lock up and 1 kernel panic.

The problem is definately DVD player. Yesterday while at work my boss gave me a DVD to test that he had just recoreded, a compressed DVD9 disk to DVD5.

I inserted it, DVD player loaded up then I got the kernel panic screen! So I did a hard shutdown and booted up.

This morning I cam to test a DVD I had left encoding and burning over night.... Eerie Indiana, classic program..... When I came to test it when DVD player loaded up and OSX locked up, not displaying the panic screen... just a full system lock.

Any ideas?

This is a known issue with 4GB of ram - not sure of the details but it's been discussed here :)

I can burn/rip/encode DVDs without any problems at all... its just when I come to play them, either ones ive encoded or even official releases I get the kernel panic, or just a full system lock....

I am using 2x2GB Kingston 667MHZ DDRII RAM I got from play.com.

Yeah, tell me about it!! I think the last one killed my macbook though.. It won't restart now.. I've tried EVERYTHING and all I get is a black screen and a bunch of beeps.. No start-up chime, no grey screen- just beeps.. CRAP!!!..

Anybody seen this before?

Yeah I'm a member of that club as well. DVD Player made my older shows look so good too.

Try reseating your RAM.

Same issue here. I got one in Front Row playing a Video_TS folder yesterday as well. That was a first...

I tried reseating the ram- in fact, I even reinstalled the original ram it shipped with.. I know that's usually the cause of something like this, so I REALLY made sure it was seated properly..

Obviously I'll take it in to Apple, but I've got a bad feeling about this one for some reason.. Ahh, either way it's still covered, so they'll either fix it or replace it I'm sure..

well, hate to say it but the last crash my MacBook had as a result of this ended in a fried logicboard. I'm not sure this was the cause of the logicboard- but I'm not sure it wasnt either.

I had my MacBook set to automatically launch VLC when a video dvd was inserted, but I had just changed the setting to this so maybe it hadn't kicked in yet. what does everyone think we should set the the computer to do when a DVD is inserted? I'm thinking set it to ignore and then manually launch VLC until there's a fix for this? thats of course after I get my MB back from AppleCare.

what a pain.

Logged a call

I've logged a call with Apple about this problem. I don't hold out much hope of a fix if they have known about this for as long as they seem to have.

I'm going to visit my local Apple retail store tomorrow, has anybody had any success with asking for a replacement macbook that doesn't use the same graphics chipset, such as the newest macbook or a macbook pro?

I'd obviously pay the extra cost, but I just want a computer that is able to play a DVD without having to reboot it first.

My macbook is the late 2007 version with 4gb crucial that was fitted the day it arrived. I have no problems with any other applications, such as Aperture 2, Photoshop, MS Office etc.

The ram is fine, I have tested it multiple times, it is a known bug. Just have to ride it out.

i would have worn a wig and fake tits when i bought my mb if i'd known apple were going to **** me and sell me a laptop that can't play dvds.

You can play DVDs using Apple DVD Player just not with 4 GB of RAM.

Just like I make a good TV antenna. No really I do.

That was not really a helpful comment was it?

What do you suggest people with this problem do, remove their 4gb of RAM and replace it with 1GB whenever they want to play dvd's?

You don't have to replace any RAM. Just set it so VLC opens DVDs by default instead of DVD Player until Apple fixes this.

All MacBooks that support 4GB of RAM (Late 2007/Early 2008) use the same graphics chipset, so that wouldn't help.

Hmmm, I don't recall having this problem when I tried playing DVD's.

But then again, I replaced the hard drive and rebuilt the system from scratch.

I would imagine it has something to do with the X3100 drivers not being up to par quite yet.

Will go home and try.

Remember SR macbooks with 4GB ram can play DVDs via DVD Player perfectly well. Just not when there's less than 2GB ram free.

In a critical situation (boss or wife is watching you) just reboot the macbook to clear out the memory.

Even just logging out and then back into your account might work. (You *DO* have login on reboot set to ask for your password right? Such a valuable and cheap security precaution)

I don't think that's true. I have at least 2.5 gb nearly all the time. I've had a kernel panic right after boot up when I insert a DVD.

Hi all,

Running a SR Macbook with 4Gb.

Does anyone know if this issues is likely to be addressed with Leopard 10.5.3 as its due out quite shortly?

DC.

Sodding hope so. Have to wait and see.

I was thinking this could be fixed in a small update to DVD player, but if the above posters are correct and it's a more fundamental issue, then it might need a 10.5.x update to sort out.

As more people get 4GB ram, Apple will get more reports of this issue, so if not in 10.5.3, maybe in 10.5.4

Only way to find out is if someone has access to the developer builds.

Of course they shouldn't reveal any details, but that's what makes things interesting.
