From the Dxo review.

A cropped portrait.

Impressive.

Wow! I can't wait to upgrade from my 6. That's a significant improvement.

Note 8 is still miles ahead.
Are there Note 8/ iPhone 8 camera reviews that show the Note 8 camera is better? I know there aren't many comparisons of both yet but tomsguide gives the edge to the iPhone 8. Either phone takes great pictures.

I just wish Apple would not differentiate the camera on the iPhone Plus and iPhone. For me, one of the most important features of a phone is the camera but the plus is unworkable for me as a day to day device (of course maybe the X2 or X3 if they bring back touch ID or I can tolerate pulling out my phone - looking at it, the paying for things).

I'd have bought the 8 if it didn't have a low-rent version of the camera from the 8 plus, I'm sure Apple can squeeze it in there.

As it is I'll hold on to my SE for now - I don't want a big phone, I want a phone I can use one-handed with all the same tech as the more "premium" models and I'd happily pay the same for the convenience. It seems if you don't want a massive phone you can't get the best toys any more.

And the ones calling them haters are the overconfident insecure ones. Remember that.

If iPhone 8 sales start to drop, guess where the head shot is going? Straight to the Apple leadership.

I got suspended for using a meme. This would have been a perfect spot to use a “Why so serious” meme.

But then you run into laws of physics. ie you need a larger surface area to capture more light and you need to have lenses moving from and to each other to get a real physical zoom.

All true when dealing with just the optic part of the equation. What your statement fails to recognize are the algorithms and their abilities to filter and interpret data from the sensors. We aren't dealing with chemicals on a piece of plastic anymore and the pictures from such small lenses and sensors are amazing.

Combine advancements in the hardware with the programmer's skill and this stuff just gets better and better from a smaller and smaller package.

I go the other way on that. I like and use the hardware features on my Note devices (I've had 2 and ordered the Note8 too), Bixby button notwithstanding.

With the Note you get more functionality for your money:

1. Stylus: Not everyone uses it, but when you need precision touch on the go, it can't be beat
2. Expandable storage: Running out of room on your device sucks. Non issue for many, though
3. Headphone jack: Apple includes a dongle for this with their phone for a reason
4. Bigger screen: Greatly enhances split screen multitasking (another missing iPhone feature) so you can monitor email and chats simultaneously.
5. Fingerprint reader: Inconvenient location aside, the X omits it completely (although the way FaceID works is brilliant). Combined with the iris scanner this provides more sign on options.
6. All other Android goodies iOS still doesn't offer (widgets, customization, filesystem acces, etc)

The iPhone is not even close, but if it offers all you need/want then I can see how the term 'bloat' gets thrown around.

I've had a Note 5 before. But expandable storage on Android devices is a joke. You can't install every app on the SD Card, so most Android phones coming with 32 or 64 gigs of ROM will fill up fast. Plus, they aren't cheap. Well maybe a 128 gig card is but once you get bigger, adding one to your Android device still comes out about the same price as an iPhone with that amount of storage. And widgets and changing icons really doesn't concern me much, although I do have some a few nice sets on my KEYone. But I do LOVE the fact that you can put different launchers on the phone. I have the Pixel Launcher on my KEYone and it's fantastic, plus Evie. But all that aside, I do think that iOS needs a complete overhaul. A major 100% overhaul. I just like the Material Design aspect of Android better, but when it comes to actual phones, I'd still get the iPhone X. Apple has one feature that is the killer feature that Google will never have. A message system like iMessage. Google sucks donkey balls at messaging.

Wouldn’t that be funny if the iPhone X has a lesser camera and performs Worse in testing. Though I’m confident they matched or battered its performance, that would be a really tough pill to swallow!

I remember the outrage when the iPod touch second generation outperformed the iPhone 3G with regards to hardware Speed.

On the fence with iPhone X vs iPhone 8 Plus. I bet even if I wake up at 3:00am on iPhone X order day, it won't arrive in 2017. But I bet it is possible to stroll into any random retail store and pick up a brand new iPhone 8 Plus in whatever color and size I want on launch day with hardly any lines.

Bah. The wait isn't that long for the X's launch now. Just wait and see if you can get one fast. If not, buy the 8 Plus.

But can you get the X when they have shortages? You won't until mid 2018. You'll have to contend with whatever you have on your palms for the moment. You'll probably enjoy the $120 monthly phone bill when you get the X and continue to spend $500-$1000 again for an upgrade each or every other year.

My phone bill is a flat $100 monthly. And I did mention that IF I had a grand... I'm done with paying monthly rental fees to phone companies.

Oh, believe me. Phone bills are getting ridiculous these days. Back then, they weren't that bad. I had to pay nearly $80 a month for unlimited data ( data only for deaf people ) but now it dropped to about $55-60 a month which is manageable, after having removed insurance. After all, it's an SE. Once I pay it off in a few or several months, the phone bill should drop down to $45 a month flat.

A phone camera can not even come close to a DSLR!

It's the processing that Apple does with the image that makes it look so good on a phone screen and a monitor. If you could take Apple's processing to a DSLR image then you'd see that there is no comparison between a tiny camera sensor on a phone and a large sensor with high quality glass in front of it.

The reason iPhone pictures look so good to us is that very few people are good at processing images from a DSLR. The iPhone is a "Great Photos for Dummies" tool.

Try taking a picture of the same scene. One with an iPhone and the other with a DSLR. Have a good photographer who knows how to use a DSLR and who also is very good at processing his images take the picture. On the screen they'll look similar, however, make a large print and the differences will easily be seen.

The iPhone produces terrific pictures but don't for a second think it can compare to a DSLR!

BTW, I use my iPhone camera more then my DSLR for 2 reasons. First is that it's always with me and the second is that many times I don't need the higher quality of the DSLR.

Plus the main thing that people don't know about renting a phone is that you can't take a crisp hundred in to the phone store and put it towards your PHONE. Once you rent it, it has to be paid in full to pay it off. You can't make extra payments towards the principal like you can with a car loan.

The Pixel looks punchier but the iPhone seems to do better with skin tones. I'd also imagine that the profile on the iPhone would allow for a little more flexibility in post when editing in something like LightRoom Mobile since it's less likely to clip either end of the histogram. As for the portrait example, it's too bad they didn't make sure the shots were framed up the same, as the photographer used a more successful composition and model pose for the Pixel photo.

What I'd really like to see in a future iPhone is a foveon-like stacked sensor array. In sensors such as these, the RGB pixels are stacked vertically so they occupy the same physical space on the sensor, and they basically use color filters to measure how much of each wavelength makes it through. The benefit of such a sensor is you can fit three times as many pixels in the same area, or increase your photo receptors to be three times larger. I think a nice balance would be an 18MP sensor with individual photo receptors that are twice as large. This would result in a good bump in resolution combined with a solid increase in image quality—especially in low-light conditions. I'm not sure, but I wonder if larger photo receptors would be it easier for them to be affixed with microlenses to shorten the focal length, removing the need for the camera bump? I thought I remember reading something about that in another camera in the past, but can't remember exactly all the details of how that works.

iPhone X has the true depth camera on the front whereas the 8+ doesn’t. That’s the only main difference in the cameras. But do the display and Face ID sway you at all?

A 64GB card is $17.

With Apple you don't have the choice to expand, and if you do it at point of sale, it'll cost you $150 (on the 8), because they have no 128GB tier. Even if they did, the pricing works out to $50 per 64GB, if I didn't screw up the math.

Also, I don't fill my storage up with apps on my device. I fill it up with photos, videos, and music, which can be written to the SD card. Apple forces you to iCloud it all...

Can't argue the iMessage preference...I use Messages on my Sammy to text my kids, wife and extended family. I'm not a heavy texter.

I agree that iOS needs an overhaul...it could be so much more and has great potential, especially on the desktop side. But at this point in the mobile space, Apple's hardware limitations are deal-breakers for me.

My iPhone 6 does amazing photos if you’re shooting in a colourful daylight. What we need is ability to take photos in dark and better ability to zoom.
You're never gonna get great low light performance with a sensor that small. Its why full frame cameras are still the king of low light

That's great news! (except now we'll never hear the end of the whinedroids.)

Totally agree with this and they say the best camera is the one you have with you at the time. The iPhone 8 looks like a nice step up from the 6 and the picture quality is good enough that even if you had a DSLR would you actually need to use it for typical point and shoot scenarios?

But I do like having a smaller phone and lose the fat bezel on the top and bottom. Face ID is nice when my hands are wet from the rain. I think I'll just wait for the iPhone X and hope I can get it in November by some small miracle.
