Montevina is worth waiting for, not because of WiMax, but because it's supposed to be significantly smaller. In addition, intel's "turbo memory" (Actually a small amount of NAND flash memory on an expansion card would be cool, and possible. Most mid and high end PC laptops have an option for it, so it's just a matter of time.

The next update (If they update soon) will put in a multi touch track pad, magnetic lock, and of course the penryn processors.

I wouldn't complain if they went up to the 8700GT, but I just don't think it's going to happen.

I'm pretty sure the TurboCache option has been around since Santa Rosa chipset and Vista launched. I thought the reaction to it was that it didn't end up making sense and Apple and other manufacturers decided to forgo it for the option of using SSDs or Hybrid HDDs.

Also, it's been said many times that the current gpu is the same as the 8700GT.

Again, there's nothing about Montevina that's of use to the Macbook Pro aside from the faster front side bus. Apple might do a redesign of the system now, or they might in June, or next year, or whatever, but none of it would have anything to do with Montevina.

And that flash has been around for a year now, and doesn't benefit much of anything, at least not in Windows.

Especially not very useful when OS X actually does support 4GB+ of RAM.

it'd be nice to be able to put more than 4gb RAM in the upcoming laptops.

Supposedly we already can, once 4gb dimms become available, although there has been disagreement among MR members concerning the possibility. But ram and turbo cache are not the same fwir. TC is like flash memory as in ssd or usb mem sticks. Storage in non volatile memory. Vs RAM which is volatile temp storage.

A MBA with the SSD is not the same as a laptop with 64GB ram.

i still cannot get over how epic a black aluminum pro would be...

hopefully, if they are to do it, it will be during this revision and not the montevina

I don't think a black one will be that great. It would be likely to scratch easily which wouldn't be good.

I've got a darling little iShuffle in bright green and that doesn't scratch. It's a kind of anodising thing I think.

My money is on tomorrow being 'Macbook Air in stores now' and maybe 10.5.2 being released. No Macbook Pro attention this Tuesday.

Better not be. We need those graphics cards upgraded.

I want to chip in as well.

If Apple wants battery life to go up they will, of course, have 45nm Penryn, a wild guess, a 55nm Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and a 2.5" Solid State Drive (could be as high as 128GB). Be sure to check your credit before ordering though ;)

That should add a good 30-45 minutes of battery life over the current model.

MacBook Pro 15.4" low / high
Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz / Core 2 Duo 2.6Ghz / BTO Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz
2GB ram standard
160GB / 200GB / BTO 250GB, 320GB and Solid State Drive up to 128GB
Mobility Radeon HD 3650 128MB / 256MB

MacBook Pro 17" would basically share the same hardware as the high-end 15.4" MacBook Pro.

It would absolutely rock if they included the Mobility Radeon HD 3850 instead. A man can dream of course. This is very unlikely though.

Design changes? Sure but I will leave that up to Apple to decide ;)

Ram

It would be nice to have 1 stick of 2 GB RAM instead of 2 x 1 GB. This would be cheaper for us to add another stick of 2 GB to get 4 GB total instead of buying 2 x 2 GB.

I think the spec's given are very realistic, although I think the hard drive in the 2 higher end's will still be 5400rpm but with a 7200rpm BTO option.

The graphics are likely to have the VRAM bumped as suggested in the above specs, but I doubt Apple will replace the GPU with a different one until Montevina.

I'm hoping for a minor/moderate revision(Rev E), with the major overhaul occurring with Montevina.

I fear my iBook will die any week now, and I want to replace it with something that's as reliable as it can get while implementing the latest technology.

Can't wait to see if tomorrow is the day!

I agree, except I think the 2.8 will be standard on the 17 and high 15. The whole optional 2.6 upgrade thing last year was just to offer a little more in the machines before they were renewed, and the HD option on the 17 was to placate those who'd otherwise whine about lack of LED...

verstanden. further off this SSD bit, though, i'm holding out for the penryn pretty much only b/c of the 6mb cache and sse4 instrux, hoping that the latter will be taken advantage of by a .x update of logicpro. i'll max the ram however much is possible and will thus give myself no reason to consider a new laptop for several years.

of course, if they hike the price for any dumbassed reason, i'll look again at the refurb'd 2.4 17" hi-res's that are on the shelf right now at highly attractive prices...

seriously, though, in this instance i'm masochistically loving the idea of buying the top-of-line new model... it's dumb, but day-um!!!

I disagree because it will make the high end Macbook Pro the same spec as the high end iMac for a very similar price.
