I don't understand the sense in silently updating a system. Where there's money to be made the best option is to promote, publicise and try and make the most money you can. The best option would be to release the MBA, get the spotlight and hype sales, then update the MBP in a month or two and get the spotlight and sales for the MBP.

People might say the MBP and MBA won't be competing for the same market but I don't believe that's true. In lots of threads I've seen someone say "Well the MacBook Pro's delayed... I might get the MacBook Air instead". It may make no sense to you, but to others what they want is a new machine. I doubt most people who buy pro's really 'need' them. They just want them, and there's no difference between wanting an MBA than a MBP.

apple wants all of the attention focused on the macbook air so that they can get higher profits. the people who actually care about the MBP will most likely be in the loop enough to know about whether or not it has been updated anyway

From a purely market-driven perspective... do you really think Apple aim their MacBook Pro product solely to those 'in the loop'? Maybe they do, I'm definately only new to Mac... but it would just make no marketing sense whatsoever. How do Apple usually promote their products?

Dear gods of all religions,
The time has come. Judgement day. We the people need not but one thing, on this one all holy day tomorrow. Forgive us are sins, and give us the updated macbook pro.

Amen.

(all others say amen too...alone our prayers may mean nothing, but in the masses everything)

While I understand where you're coming from, the Mac Pro hadn't been updated for nearly a year and this is Apples most expensive 'PRO' computer and when they updated it (a week before MWSF), it was updated silently. There was no publicity at all surrounding it, but the people that the system was aimed at, knew it had been updated.

I do disagree with the "the Macbook Pro hasn't been updated so I'll buy a Macbook Air instead" statements because from what I've seen, most people that were waiting for a Macbook Pro update either bought the current model or are still waiting.

The people that need the power of the Macbook Pro will not opt for a Macbook Air simply because it's a 'new machine' because the power that they need isn't there. The Macbook Air is in fact a slimmer, less powerful version of the standard Macbook, and therefore the people it's more likely to appeal to are the people that were hoping for an Aluminium Macbook.

The Macbook Pro isn't aimed soley to those 'in the loop' but the Macbook Air and Macbook Pro are 2 VERY different computers.

Apple users know exactly what the Macbook Pro is and what the Macbook Air lacks (for a start, the Macbook Pro has a dedicated graphics card, whereas the Macbook Air is integrated).

Also, the Macbook Air only has ONE USB port and a headphone jack. Professional users or people wanting to use the Macbook Pro for what it's designed for, won't be able to carry out such takes on the Macbook Air due to it's lack of connectivity.

Heck, even though I'm an atheist, I'll amen to that.

I didn't realize how big of difference this actually was until I sold my Core Duo MBP with 256MB graphics to buy an iPhone and C2D MacBook. I miss the graphics card.

But in all fairness, people are going to think that about the price difference whether the MBP is updated or not.

The MBP isn't likely to come down in price because the prices haven't changed during previous product updates.

Anyway, we'll see very shortly whether or not Apple fulfill many of our dreams :)

The price will come down for Canadians, given the exchange rates :)

Apple have had good pricing for AppleTV, MacBook Air, Leopard etc etc- so hopefully this will continue for the MacBook Pro.

Add me to the list of people who wouldnt mind a couple extra usb ports!

And please let this release tomrorow or next week. I don't want to wait until March to get my new toy!

I understand all of this and agree. Is it possible that a close release could, instead, impact on the sale of MacBook Air. To me, it's already on a shaky enough base as is. For instance, how exactly can you market the MBA? It's high selling point, I suppose, is it's thinness and weight. However, surely a product needs more than this to be saleable. A close release could make customers focus on the price of each of Apple's current notebooks and a comparison of what you get for your money.

I guess your assumption is that each notebook comes with a ready-made market and that the market will know which model best suits them. I'm not so sure about this. I'd assume Apple would be wanting to draw in a lot of non mac-aware customers at any stage. Surely silent releases wouldn't be the best way to do this.

In the end, I suppose all they care about is they make some type of sale, however, I'd imagine they'd want the MBA to have enough time to carve out a space of its own before moving off to the MBP release. We'll see though!

The bottom line Macbook Pro will remain the same price regardless. They've not been changed for several years.

Why MBP will come out Feb 5th

Take a close look at the product release dates in the buyer's guide. Patterns start to emerge. Its no accident that for the last two years, new upgrades come out in the first week of the month, on a Tuesday or Wednesday (MW excluded). This is no secret holy grail, but rather sound marketing policy.

Now notice that Apple rarely releases more than 2 major upgrades per month. The only exception is September, which is wisely loaded with consumer-level machines to beef up 4th quarter sales.

January has already been good, so we're getting greedy asking for a MBP tomorrow. We already got the MBA, Mac Pro, and server upgrades this month- more than your average January. I make no guarantee of 2/5, but it makes perfect sense, from a marketing perspective and also in context with the recent rumors.

Dude, I think gazfocus nailed it. I don't see the further need for convincing.

My thinking is this:

Since the Penryn chips are just a drop-in replacement for Merom, a silent refresh with only CPU change is very probable. A VRAM bump is possible, but I don't think it's probable given Apple's track record with graphics hardware updates. The new multitouch trackpad will likely be considered too new and there may be fear of stealing thunder from the MBA.

With the Montevina platform, a new logic board will be needed, so that's when the case will get a redesign. With Montevina ready in May, and updated machines appearing a few weeks later, Apple could hold out a new, sexy, curvy, multitouch-y MBP for WWDC where they like to debut Pro machines.

I Am Not A Psychic. Take this with a grain of salt (or two). This is wild speculation, after all.

This is very logical, but I'm not going to agree...not because I don't believe you, just because I want a new MBP tomorrow :p

I agree that we are not to expect anything major. All I'm looking for is effectively the current high end 15" spec for the low end price. (If it's not updated soon, I might consider a refurb because it's only really the CPU increase I'm looking for).

people, dont give up hope!!!

I DO wanna see a major update tomorrow!
They could've specifically redesigned the case now, so that when the montevina comes out only a few months later, those that bought it in those few months, don't feel ****ed. It's been so long since the last update, so this one can be saawweeett and totally different

i feel overly optimistic

I think that if the case has been redesigned for this update, we will be waiting a while more. I however doubt a redesign will accompany this update.

i dont really want a case redesign anway, the current one is so ncie...i just one a black aluminum version available :)
