Regarding the first half of your point, Apple was at least that much behind PC manufacturers when Merom was introduced. Regarding Montevina, they'll be at least two months behind everybody else. So no need to worry about not enough time between Penryn and Montevina :)
Not so true back in June with the Santa Rosa transition for the MacBook Pro.

Guys, I've hit rock bottom.

As I type this, I'm in the lobby of my building pulling sequence off of the NCBI website using my 20 inch iMac that I carried, yes carried, down 3 files of stairs so I could pick up the school wifi signal. The cleaning staff thinks I'm crazy.

This is sad. :(

Oh, how I dream of pulling out a sleek MBP and doing this.
You would have gotten more points failing over a rack mounted server attached to a wireless bridge on its secondary ethernet while powered from a UPS going down 10 floors.

The cleaning staff is just jealous of your 20" Be careful what you pull out in public:D

You are so hardcore and I love it!

To distract you all from the prospect of MBP next Tuesday, which I will definitely buy, because I actually need one, I though I'd slash a few dreams while we're at it.

Redesign in this iteration will be minimal, at best. Anything more than penryn and a slightly larger touchpad will be a BIG surprise. I too would like curvier ala. mba, new keyboard, though not the mba keyboard, and of course magnetic latch. These just aren't on the cards though.

Probably the only significant advantage of Montevina is the smaller motherboard footprint, 25% smaller in fact, means it won't be until well into the 4th quarter that you can expect anything pretty.

yawn...

so steve says we don't read books anymore? thats just because i read 23 pages of people wanting a mbp. goodnight, call me when they're in.

hey, like every1 else here im still waiting for the new macbook pro's :(. was just wondering though say if they bump up the vram to 512 (high end) and 256 (in the low end ) as a gamer would it be worth the extra $500 for the jump to 512 vram assuming they keep the prices the same, like how much of a difference would there really be? cheers.

Minimal effect, the GPU and it's core clock speed is much more important. If you can't run your games at 4x FSAA, which you can't really with the weak MBP vid-cards, then there just isn't the texturing to require that much ram. If you were running a 30" display, this would also be a situation where there is benefit to be had.

Check out barefeats.com i think they did some gaming comparisons on MB and MBP's a little while back...

I meant, finally there are Rumors again about the MBP! To me, that puts my hopes up (naive, maybe but at least I'm happy :))! so I can't wait for the update!!!!

Huh

I agree about the latch but I think the current keyboard is great. What they could improve is the numeric pad hack that they have - it's crap. It would be better if they got rid of it all together.

What would be awesome is if you could chose your keyboard layout when you order online. For example you can't get the US keyboard in the UK. This probably doesn't sound like a major problem unless you happened to have grown up with a US keyboard - why they moved the @ symbol on the UK keyboard i'll never know.

What I want to see is a higher res 15' display, penryn and bluray.

LOL

People complain the forums are littered with rumors that new MBPs are coming, and then when someone buys one they're suddenly caught off guard by the news that a new MBP is coming.

*HEAD ASPLODE*

Also I cannot for the life of me understand why people wouldn't want a redesign. That latch is a joke, the keyboard is kinda clunky. To each their own I suppose.

And it would make even less sense to buy one now.

Never knew they moved the @-symbol in the uk!? Or do you mean it's in a different place in the UK than it is in the US?

Anyhoo, I live in Denmark, and I get the choice of different keyboard layouts/os combos when I order. Shouldn't you be able to do the same over there?

Here's a link (hoping it will still work):

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/dkstore.woa/9374043/wo/4p43FlUhkxoK2vVKvJZXNvW65PU/2.?p=0

Edit: a closer look reveals that you can get "intl. english" here, not the american version. However, the american version has one key less than the "intl. english"/danish/swedish/german/austrian/younameit.

Hell, why not remove all of your keys and go with a dvorak-layout instead?

That would be an option. I looked at this once but with the apple pricing and GBP to EU exchange rate it actually works out even more expensive to buy it in the EU.

I, too, am pretty annoyed with the fact that the MBP wasn't updated yesterday! I've only really been waiting for a few weeks, but still I'm quite frustrated!

I need something portable, I currently have an old iMac G5 that I've been having problems with for the last few months, it keeps on switching itself off! I've managed to arrange to sell it, and it hasn't switched itself off for a week or so now, but I'm selling it this week so need a replacement ASAP. I don't want to use my old Dell laptop for very long!

Want a new MBP, with a big display (any recommendations?)!

this is disappointing! I wanted to buy a new MBP, the current one is not that good for its price!

I agree. Disappointed! Getting itchy fingers on the Apple store lol

And the current one is not a good price for the old tech - even if they are still stunning machines. grrr

I'd be happy with a processor switch. I want the top of the range model, but not if its about to be superseded with a new line of processors.

I'd love the little extra battery life they should provide.

LED back lite 17", more VRAM/better gfx card, 2.8gz would all be a big bonus :)

As would a SSD option, even if I probably couldn't afford it, I'd love to see if I could stretch.

Its all about the best balance between speed and battery for me. I have external hard drives for data storage.

I have ordered MBP

Sh*t, my desktop PC was dead yesterday, HDD failure, completely dead.

so, I had to place the order for MBP.

I called the sales team of apple, one sale man placed that order for me.

before I gave him my credit card number, I asked him whether there would be a upgrade version coming out soon. he said he doesn't know and he personally doesn't think so. However, he said as well that he heard of the rumor too!!! finally, he gave me a suggestions:

if I order now, then it will take 7-10 days for me to get it. and after I get it, i have 14 days peace of mind. so totally, 20ish days and I can get refund for it in 20ish days. even if the mbp gets upgraded next week, i still have plenty of chances to get the newest model.

I asked him, is that 14 days refund policy still remain valid if I open the box and use it for a while? he smiled and said again:"you can have the refund"!!!

then I placed the order after the conversation.

by the way, I am in UK

Always nice to know!

My PC is about to die and then I'll have to look into doing the same! This will be my first Mac at home. The PC death or MBP release will be the trigger for me to buy.

Was hoping to get one before it bites the dust though so I can transfer stuff easier.
