Wow... I'm incredibly upset with apple right now for dropping the ball on this week's update. If they don't update the MBP's next Tuesday, I swear I'll... wait until the Tuesday after that...
Did they ever say they were going to update? I wonder why people are so upset with Apple...be upset with yourselves for getting the date wrong.

Package 1 (£2,908.01)

MBP 15"
2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB
250GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm)
23" Studio Display

Well, you can instantly shave £390 by ordering it with the standard RAM, then purchasing 4GB for £60 from play.com. £2518, much better. I'm not all too sure about the £160, 200MHz speed boost either...

I don't recommend getting such a beefed up MBP so near to a potential update, so in light of that I'd probably take the MP+MB route, or just wait. I anticipate new ACDs as well.

Either way, for goodness sake find a student you know somewhere to buy all that stuff on your behalf, offer them a few quid or whatever - Edu discount's 14-16% or so: you'll save hundreds... the total will be much closer to two grand than three then.

Long time lurker, first time poster! I'm as tired of waiting for the Mbp as everyone else it and I'm seriously considering the Mac Pro - especially when I priced it up:

OR

Package 2 (£2,977.00)

Mac Pro Quad 2.8Ghz
2GB Ram
320GB 7200-rpm
23" Studio Display
MacBook 13" 2.2 GHz
1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512MB
160GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm)
SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD RW/CD-RW)

Essentially, a desktop and laptop (with comparable spec) for the price of the MBP. It's certainly making me think...

What's there to think about, other than "do I really need a portable"? If you don't need one, go with a Mac Pro. That's what I did in 2006 after months of waiting for the first C2D MBPs. Go check out the threads from September to November of 2006 -- the Penryn frenzy pales in comparison with the hysteria of them times :D

on the contrary, you should be upset with yourself for being a humorless stick in the mud! oh, wait... you already sound upset with yourself. carry on, then!

It's humorous to complain about the lack of an update? I guess I missed the punchline...my point is, some people predicted today, some people predicted next week, some March. I don't see the logic behind these, besides "it's been so long since the last one!" So, though you may speculate, it isn't right to put Apple in the spotlight as the ones who faulted.

OSX would so destroy windows if they would just let their OS on all machines instead of being greedy.

It would be nice to have 1 stick of 2 GB RAM instead of 2 x 1 GB. This would be cheaper for us to add another stick of 2 GB to get 4 GB total instead of buying 2 x 2 GB.

I don't know if they do it now, but they used to offer this as BTO for the Mac Pro. If it came stock with 2 x 512 MB, for example, you could get 1x1 GB for a little bit more money (I don't remember the exact options so this might not be exactly correct). So there's no reason this COULDN'T work.

Add me to the list of people who wouldnt mind a couple extra usb ports!

Why? My MBP has 3 USB ports. I can't imagine why I'd ever need more than that when traveling. When I use it in the office, it's easy enough to use a hub (in the unlikely event I'd need more than 3 ports, that is).

As OS X Users we are in a unique predicament. We can't shop around and find the best deal available at the time, we have to patiently wait for things to come on Apple's schedule. Sony and Lenovo have their Penryns available with HP and Compaq soon to follow, and all of their Meroms are now on deep discount. I can't investigate those, because they use an operating system that is worthless to me.

I have been waiting since November because all indications had new MBPs at Macworld. Why bother waiting, then? Because Apple doesn't drop their prices as their machines get old - and because while I am willing to pay the quality premium for Apple products, I am not willing to be ripped off. All indications say changes are coming soon, and have for a while.

I was a system builder on the PC side before I switched in 2002 and I am still not entirely accustomed to vendor lock-in. OS X is an incredible operating system, but while I like apple hardware, it's not why I switched. Times like this, where there is an obvious decline in value of a product and apple refuses to tip its hat to that, I wonder how loyal I would be if Linux caught up just a little more. I would pay $500 for an OSX license for any hardware. Having to wait around when I am ready to buy just to keep from being fleeced is maddening

It's funny that every gets so upset about being locked into Apple, but doesn't give it a second thought if they're locked into Windows.

You're correct; however, the industry standard for measuring viewing angle is: "...measured from one direction to the opposite, giving a maximum of 180° for a flat, one-sided screen. "
Link

True - but the OP specifically stated that you couldn't see more than +/- 90 degrees and you called him dumb. You really should have read more carefully.

I was curious to see what it would be priced up in the US Apple Store, so I built the packages the best I could in the US store:

Package 1: $4,498 (£2,260)
Savings of £648 ($1,290)

Package 2: $4,098 (£2,060)
Savings of £917 ($1,824)

It's not that simple. The US price doesn't include tax, the UK price includes VAT (something like 17%). If you figure the UK price without VAT (which would be more comparable to the US price), the difference is still substantial, but smaller.

dear dmb,
You are anxed about your purchase..you might even be loosing sleep over it....You know your answer especially if you are surfing these forums. Take it back and be done with it! Come, dwell in the company of the miserable, the anxious, the eternally disappointed, MBP update waitees. Wait with us...wait with us...you'll never be one of us unless you wait and wait and wait!

mmh, sure about that? Yes I like OsX, but a major reason for why it runs ultra stable compared with Ms is that the underlying hardware is of very defined flavours. You don't have to support too many things.

Secondly, if apple opens osX up, i is giving up its harware part. Yes, even if they are believed to have the better, stable and 'funkier designed' hardware a big chunk of the market would buy a cheaper pc a second later.

and third: At the moment mac is competing with PC not direclty with microsoft. I know it's a very fine difference, but a very impotant one. Even thought they pick on vista, they still invite vista to run on their platform.
the moment you open osX for all u are in open war with microsoft.
There might be many reasons to stay in that semi coexistence situation we have at the moment.

yes I'd love a MacOs on my pc as well. Will it happen? I very much doubt it. I think apple must get very desperate to do it. But if they are wise they will keep this option open (code design wise within osx), and if everything else falls apart or the market changes in certain way, then they just pull this out of their sleeve, like magic.OsX for all ;-).

cheers

Hey akadmon,
Whats your take on Penryn vs Montevina? There is no way I am waiting until fall but whats the big diff? Does one focus on a certain dynamic of user as opposed to the other?

I don't like the March date. That puts Apple nearly six weeks behind every other manufacturer regarding the Penryn processors, and leaves only about ten weeks until the Montevina chipset is available. That would make two possible upgrades in four months. Intel has fallen into a pretty regular schedule in the past couple years, with new processors in one half of the year followed by new chipsets in the following half. Since the switch to Intel, it's pretty important for Apple to keep up with the bi-annual update schedule to keep their computing hardware competitive.

Regarding the first half of your point, Apple was at least that much behind PC manufacturers when Merom was introduced. Regarding Montevina, they'll be at least two months behind everybody else. So no need to worry about not enough time between Penryn and Montevina :)

Guys, I've hit rock bottom.

As I type this, I'm in the lobby of my building pulling sequence off of the NCBI website using my 20 inch iMac that I carried, yes carried, down 3 files of stairs so I could pick up the school wifi signal. The cleaning staff thinks I'm crazy.

This is sad. :(

Oh, how I dream of pulling out a sleek MBP and doing this.
