So here we are, post-Macworld, waiting. I'm at the point where I really need the performance of the current MBPs, and am asking myself whether I'll jump to a 15- or 17-inch high res today (or on a following Tuesday :) or wait the twelve weeks (or so) until the next big Intel chip updates are rumored to be ready for us.

This has been covered several times-there are no chip updates-Penryn is here now. Possibly a bumped FSB is the ony thing that might hit in the middle of the year, and beyond that we're talking about late 2008 at the very earliest (and right now it's looking more like 1H 2009).

Wow. Seriously?

My screen is < 1/4 inch thick and can be viewed perfectly and equally from any angle including 180 degrees.

You have to be dead center to view my girlfriends macbook screen. even being off 10 degrees will make a picture appear "negative"

I would kind of like having that built in privacy screen effect.

nothing today, so next Tuesday? but it's "Super Tuesday", i don't know whether it's a good date to release new products even though many people probably don't care at all.

Don't you hate when a whisper turns out to be little more than the wind?

In the spirit of Macrumors I will reserve my judgement. I am growing wary of these premature expectations. I think I'll stop by an Apple Store sometime after March and pretend to be surprised.

Well, the whisper said today or next Tuesday...let's hope it isn't just a whisper next Tuesday....I'm wishfully hoping but am prepared to be let down.

I don't know why people keep saying a Macbook Pro update will upstage the Macbook Air. The truth is IT WON'T!

The Macbook Air is for a completely different market to the Macbook Pro's. There will also be a hell of a lot of publicity surrounding the release of the Macbook Air's and just the sheer curiosity of the public will pull people into the Apple Stores to look at the Macbook Air.

The Updated Macbook Pro will be a silent update. It will not be publicised at all, and people going to see the Macbook Air will see the Macbook Air, and won't pay any attention to the seemingly 'same old Macbook Pro'. In addition, if people haven't been looking for a Macbook Pro or waiting for a Macbook Pro update, they won't know it's been updated.

Just my $0.02

I completely agree with gazfocus. I go to the Apple Store occasionally, and hardly anyone looks at the MBPs unless all the other computers are taken up by people who are "checking them out." The average person who walks into the apple store does not want a professional machine, they want the cheapest new shiny mac so that they can be a part of the craze and brag to their friends (some of my friends do that).

A lot of people do not check rumor sites. So if it was a silent upgrade to the MBP and no aesthetic upgrade (although i'm kinda hoping for that), not many people would be attracted to an existing machine that they've seen before. They would most likely see the MBA, stare in awe, and go check it out. In fact, people probably would not even know that the MBP was updated unless they go look at the little spec sheet/sign thing next to the computers.

I know it sounds like I'm being a little hard on average apple storegoers, but unfortunately that's the truth nowadays. I recently read an entire article in the Washington Post dedicated to the fact that so many people just want to be part of the Apple phenomenon and be "cool." So in my opinion, while the media might mention a MBP upgrade, the average Joe walking into the Apple store would not notice an upgrade and would instead go straight for the MBA. The new MBP did not come out today, so hopefully next week if we're lucky.

everyone needs to read a little bit closer

first of all, as of 1:39pm pacific time their are more than 10 websites that are independently reporting that the mbp's will be updated within the next two weeks. Second, the writer on crunch gear said he wishes for a GREEN MacBook pro for his birthday on march 17th aka saint pattys day. THAT RIGHT THERE SHOULD ALERT PEOPLE. 3rd, HP has released laptops last week with the pernyn in them. They are available on hp's website and I saw one at best buy last weekend. 4th, for all you mac newbies out there apple always releases new products at the end of the month or beginning of a month. Everything is usually released on a Tuesday other than an occasional iPod update (usually capacity) or software ie iLife or Apple works. 4th, these machines are due for some kind of update and the pernyn chips are now widly available. Intel delayed mass availabilty till mid January because of heat issues. Alright hope this clears up things for everyone but as always and especially apple rumors, you can't always believe what you read on the Internet. And yes I will buy a mbp as soon as their updated.

I notice it mainly when, for example, the girlfriend says "Hey look at this picture" and I look over only to see some nasty inverted photo, until I get out of my seat, lean over her as to get my eyes perfectly aligned in the center.

I don't ACTUALLY use my laptop at 180 degrees, just commenting that it IS capable of it. (Well 180 is impossible, maybe 179)

O.K. 179 degrees now THAT i believe!

It was 8 months between Core 2 Duo and SR, and it hasn't been another 8 months just yet.

They're due, but they won't be OVERdue for another month. ;)

Steve Jobs once visited the Virgin Islands. Now it's just called "The Islands".

I hope these jokes will tickle Steve & starts releasing the upgrade.

Please let it out...my wife is looking for the money i saved to buy me an updated mbp...HELP! :( can't hide them any longer...

what are those other sites? i'd like to take a look

Wow... I'm incredibly upset with apple right now for dropping the ball on this week's update. If they don't update the MBP's next Tuesday, I swear I'll... wait until the Tuesday after that...

Long time lurker, first time poster! I'm as tired of waiting for the Mbp as everyone else it and I'm seriously considering the Mac Pro - especially when I priced it up:

Package 1 (£2,908.01)

MBP 15"
2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB
250GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm)
23" Studio Display

OR

Package 2 (£2,977.00)

Mac Pro Quad 2.8Ghz
2GB Ram
320GB 7200-rpm
23" Studio Display
MacBook 13" 2.2 GHz
1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512MB
160GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm)
SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD RW/CD-RW)

Essentially, a desktop and laptop (with comparable spec) for the price of the MBP. It's certainly making me think...

I was curious to see what it would be priced up in the US Apple Store, so I built the packages the best I could in the US store:

Package 1: $4,498 (£2,260)
Savings of £648 ($1,290)

Package 2: $4,098 (£2,060)
Savings of £917 ($1,824)

Really shows the price difference between here and the UK....maybe a shopping trip across the pond is in store for you soon?

P.S.- Don't buy Apple memory--it's overpriced.
