I wish Apple would have just made all 13, 15 and 17 in. Macbook Pro's thinner then made the retina display a BTO or an exclusive to a 15 in just like right :( I wanted a thinner 13 in. Pro :(

It's not the same. The 13 MBP has an actual combined analog/digital in/out. The new thin 15 has an iPhone earphone/mic port. But if you are doing some pro work, wouldn't you have some USB input, anyway? I don't really know.

HMM ... you maybe right on that.

Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
Support for audio line out

However I have the late 2011 MBP 13" top end and it supports iPhone ControlTalk headsets as well. I really doubt they're the same ... but I'll have to wait for the full out review on this by an audiophile or someone that knows their way around Logic intuitively.

Yes you are correct that a MIDI-to-USB connection would be used for importing audio more than the headset jack on recent MBP models.

Well, those 2 people would be opposites in audio. ;)

The optical addition does not preclude a mic addition ala the iPhone. I'd describe it if necessary, but I'm not sure I can do it without massive double entendres. Damn, already did one.

I'm not impressed

No wow factor for me with these products.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by my iPad 3.

Im sitting this one out. I'll most likely just get an SSD upgrade for my current 15", which has cool features like a SuperDrive, Ethernet port, and FireWire.

The future of MacBooks

Well these new MacBooks can't get much slimmer but I do see them getting cheaper over time. Maybe the future of MacBooks will be once they max out what goes in them, screen, thickness and such they will be practically unupgradable and once they are so they will get cheaper and cheaper so that 2k will buy the top of the line non upgradable model that costs 3k today.

Nice try, but the conversation in this thread is about how "Pro" the new thin MBP is, and you put me out of context deleting the quote I was replying to about a guy talking down someone with a genuine worry about screen area and saying he uses too many toolbars in Word.

So call me what you want but someone using the "professional line of laptops from apple" to use office and other productivity software or to cut his children's recital using FCP is not a pro computer user. Driving a Ferrari to buy groceries doesn't make you an F1 driver. God I hate car comparisons, but you deserve one.

I wasn't trying to be tricky. Word and excel works fine in my case - there are power users of these applications. Yes, you don't need a lot of processing power for these, but if you're doing both you need screen real estate. Most actual professionals use word with another application and want two applications side by side, and goodness forbid, a readable page on their laptop. For that specific purpose, actual "professionals" are not served by the MBP. In fact they are not served by any of Apples lines .

Now you're thinking pure horsepower of the chip and video card somehow are "professional" specs, ignoring the importance of display resolution. This is of course ironic given that most creatives and gamers aren't technically "licensed professionals" and you see MBPs mostly with college kids and under 30s.

So in that sense your car comparison is confused - the MBP is the Ferrari. It has a big engine, all the creature comforts, too much weight and the rich kids buy them. Apple actually sells nothing for F1 drivers (thin, light and optimized for applications used by professionals).

Loved this update...

The only two faults I find is that I think—especially with a pair of TB ports—that HDMI was kind of a lame inclusion. In general, another USB port would have been more practical. The other fault is I would have loved a 13" model. I'm hoping that's coming, either that or the new 15" Pro is going to be the only Pro book.

Of course, stuff a retina display in the Airs and I'm there too.

I'm curious to hear the fans and if it's as quiet as they claim. If it works as advertised, that's a great bonus.

This was an exciting update and with the two TB ports plus a couple TB adapters, it looks like the port is picking up some steam. Good stuff. And I'm so glad to see optical drives going away too. I'm considering pulling mine out to put a second HD in this laptop.

Looks like next release is finally going to produce the laptop I've been waiting for. Woohoo.

Big thumbs down to this upgrade

To those that say 17" MBPs are not necessary, I am a programmer, and, YES, I need more screen space, so no 17" models comes as a big disappointment. What am I going to do, use a magnifier, or those special dentist glasses? No, I have to spend another 1K to buy the Apple display.

Next, there seems to be no way to upgrade the SSD. I would be curious to see how the speed of these flash drives fares against the latest SSD models.

And using "retina" for a display sounds like an unpleasant medical procedure. I refuse to play the marketing game. It's a higher resolution display. The difference is not even that noticeable. I checked an IPad 2 and an Ipad 3 side by side and I couldn't tell the difference when I browsed to the same pages on the internet.

The "retina" display is a marketing scam. In the end we all like the text to have a certain size no matter the resolution. If I were to change the display to the highest resolution, 2880x1800, I would probably need a big magnifier to see the letters so the text size would have to be increased (we'll be paying the hidden costs of upgrading the software to support a higher quality scaling to lower resolutions). I can see the benefit for watching HD movies, but let's face it, the human eye can detect so much and in the end I use this for work not for watching movies.

In other words, we are being offered nothing.

If they were offering one, I'm sure they would have mentioned it.

I'm just guessing here, but I would say that the Intel HD4000 isn't powerful enough to drive a high resolution display and there isn't space for discrete graphics.

It's unfortunate too, because I was waiting for the 13" model as well.

WHAT??? no 13 inch? thats sad cuz i want the 13 inch model. but will it come a few months later ( august)? cuz it is rumored that the smaller models have heat dissipation issues. after all, its the macbook pro, i think they will offer the 13 inch model soon.

Hell, now I wish I waited for this instead of getting an iPad.

In invalid comparison, considering the differing prices and intended use. I use my iPad all the time, for classroom use, reading/research, and some gaming. I

I'd replace my aging iMac with a $2,200 MBP, which has the power of a consumer desktop and flexibility of a portable. But the machine that gets lugged around the city and opened anywhere (standing, sitting, lecturing) is a $600 iPad.

My beef about the new 15" Pro is:
...
3)The Macbook became the Macbook Pro and the Retina Pro is a new model. Talk about mucking around with branding.
This a million times over.
The new MacBook Pro models have features that belong in a base model MacBook, yet Apple seems to think the iPad meets the needs of all would-be-users who are unwilling to spend $1500+ on a laptop.

When ssd hard drives are as cheap as regular drives apple will have a laptop thinner than any pc, cheaper to build than any pc and it will be 300 to $600 cheaper than it is now from the lower ssd price alone. The MacBook airs of the future should be incredibly cheap. And both the air models would be under $1000. SSD prices are the only things keeping thinner less upgradable MacBook costs high. No pc maker will make money selling non upgradable machines and that will end up being apples advantage eventually. Selling cheap non upgrade able systems across the board once ssd prices are dirt cheap. It's actually crazy enough to work.

Not really. See, I've been using my iPad as a glorified netbook, rather than, to abuse an old phrase, media consumption device. It's been a long fight, but I've actually succeeded in getting it to do all the things I want it to do (jailbreaking really helped out here).

I've got my little flippy foldy smart cover thing, an Apple wireless keyboard, jailbroke it so I'd have access to the file system, got it set up with remote desktop. I've got it doing all kinds of neat stuff.

...and then a thought occurred to me. "Why the **** did I go through all this trouble, when I could've just grabbed a laptop that does it all right out of the box"?

Now don't get me wrong, I love my iPad. It's lightweight, easy to carry around (when I'm not dragging the keyboard around with it anyway), and great for quite a few things. But when all is said and done, I'm using it for stuff that it isn't best suited for. Sure, I can get quite a bit done on an iPad, but I could get it done better, quicker, and easier on a laptop.

I'm thinking I should've used the cash I spent on a nice Macbook first, then picked up the iPad later.

So you suggest that people rather spend another $99 on an Apple TV instead of $5 on an HDMI cable? Maybe you should apply at :apple:, you seem to have great ideas on how to make even more profit with a $2199 device.

I remember a great many people on this very forum complaining about the lack of an HDMI out.

I do think it makes my AT3 a bit redundant, but it's small and always hooked up, and always available. I don't have to plug anything in. Plus, I could use my MBP while watching AT3 :)

At least, the next gen Macbook Pro is advertised with pro stuffs. Video editing, science and engineering.
Drafting is not engineering; it is a necessary step in communicating engineered designs to clients, governments, machinists/installers, etc..
AutoCAD is a drafting program.

Lucy, 'splain something:

SD card slot. Why?

Probably because it does. As a consumer/home user, between my cheap refurbished iMac and my iPad, I don't *need" a MBP. "Want" is a different matter.

If you look, they still offer the current style of unibody MacBook Pro, with slightly upgraded hardware. They just don't offer a slim 13" model(yet). I'd really like to see one with discrete graphics, but honestly with the amount of space the battery takes up in the 15" unit, I don't think it'd fit.

It sits nervously in my cart.
It appears to be everything I wished for.

....It costs 8 iPads.

And for christ's sake why does it not come in BLACK?

I just broke down and bought one with the 2.6ghz processor, I think a made a good move being a graphic design student. I hope the year and a half of saving pays off for it being my first Mac. :) so stoked.

You mean you *saved up* for it and didn't just take a giant student loan to pay for it? What kind of student are you? :)

New MacBook Pro looks great but I gotta say I really enjoy watching DVD movies on my current MBP and I'm not sure about no disk drive in the new MBP.

I know: I need to get up with the times, CDs and DVDs are so yesterday, but I still use mine everyday!

Looks like I'll stick with my current MBP for a little while longer....

With high failure rates for internal optical drives and the added weight/size, an external makes a lot more sense. Unfortunately, it does add another peripheral (and expense) to the machine.

Seriously? Not being snarky here, just really surprised. It's night and day difference to my eyes.

The 'blocky' text on my iPad2 is hands down the thing I dislike most having being spoiled on an iPhone 4.

Estimated delivery is 2-3 weeks in the online store for Australia, for the New Macbook Pro 15 with Retina.

I went to the Apple store, they have no idea when are they getting new stock. But their allocated stock has been shipped from China as they say.

Anyone else noticed the pentalobe screws? That ought to piss off some upgraders. I may be wrong considering I don't have my MBP right in front of me, but I'm pretty sure the 2011's have regular phillips head screws in them.

I believe they were more interested in the fact that more web page area was not displayed but it is much sharper. Time to queue up Anandtech's pictures...
