I don't get it. Why hide a beautiful design with an ugly cover? Why is it important to prevent scratches if you won't be able to see the phone anyway?

I totally agree with Erwin.. it's just sad that Apple go to great lengths to make the iPhone 4 thinner and just as light yet people are determined to transform it into an unidentifiable brick.. some cases are pretty sleek like the Vapor but 99% just don't do the iPhone justice

That Vapor looks nice!!! I hope people do come out with different backs because I would hop on that pretty quick. That would be an awesome addition to the iPhone 4.
And yeah I went with some thick cases on my 3GS, not to bulky but it was my first iPhone so I was alil scared to drop but then I got comfortable and rocked only slim cases or naked. And that's how I'm doing the phone. It's way to nice to have big bulky thick brick cases on lol

never understood the point of a case and I still dont. you dont go buy a BMW only to have it covered up when its sitting around or driving around.

lets get real here, you do pay more for apple products and part of the premium price is the nice-looking aspect of the product. why cover it up?

just watch what you do with it. very easy to keep it in perfect shape.

I don't want a case but if I plan on making any phone calls that don't drop or not go through at all I need one. At least until Apple does something about the antenna issue.

The Vapor is pretty expen$ive for what it is. I am going to be using an old (and very nice) case I got for a G3s until I find what I want. Going to be using the Exacto knife to make the holes what they should be for the new phone. So far, the only case I saw which was nifty and functional was the one the guy made out of the clear one with the image of the camera on top of it. Very clever.

no bumpers

Lessie - 30-dollar bumper from Apple - which won't work with their 30-dollar dock. Unless I want to remove it and put it on again every time I want to use the 30-dollar dock.

Wow - that's elegant as ****.

have an ifrogz case. Needed a case that was at BB.

Already cracked near the power button at the top left hand corner.

I got a Rocketfish charcoal grey gel case at Best Buy, about the only decent-looking case out of the handful they had. And it was only $20. The Apple store had none at all, just their bumpers. And no screen protectors. So far the Rocketfish works fine. The flash doesn't seem to be affected at all. For the first time, I'm not using a screen protector (I used to have the anti-glare film) and I'm loving it. The oleophobic coating works great, and there's much less glare than I expected.

As someone who owns a white 3GS I find the white front of the new iPhone rather ugly. When the time comes for me to upgrade I'll be buying either a white phone and replacing the front screen or more likely a black and replacing the back with a white one.

Guess I wasn't the only one who thought this.

Grip & Protection

Well, for me a bumper or a case is as much about grip as it is about protection. Better grip means that the phone is less likely to slip out of my hands. I picked up a Sonix hardshell at Tekserve for $20 last week, and I'm quite happy with it (covers back and sides, and is protruding slightly around the front edges). It also came with two screen protectors, which I'm not using, though.

This really bugs me why people bother with cases.

Apple spend millions developing a beautiful looking, slimline iPhone with scratch resistant glass, and the first thing people do is slap it in a bulky, ugly case effectively doubling the thickness and weight and hiding the design Apple spent so much R&D on.

People always bang on about how Apple products are beautiful etc, and then hide them away.
I personally would get a case not to prevent scratches but in case of accidental drops. We're all humans and make mistakes, and I personally don't want a single mistake to shatter a $300 phone. With the iphone4 shattering so much easier due to the hardened glass on both sides it just makes sense to a lot of us. For a lot of people like myself, it's function over form.

Yeah hea! Why get a case that covers your phone? How the heck can people see you have the new iPhone if it's all covered up? What are you embarrassed by it's well publicised lack of functionality or something?

If removing two screws means the back slides off.

Then why not just make the battery user replaceable?

Well it kinda is... Should you need to replace your battery just order one online, pop out 2 (well 3 with the battery screw) screws, pull out old battery and slap in the new one. (It's no longer soldered in there)

It's not convient enough to do on a daily basis but at least you can replace it without a $99 fee should it die. And I suspect in a year they will have longer lasting batteries that fit right in there for 3rd parties, or even larger ones with custom "bubble-backs" to use.

While I never had my 2G or 3G in a case, I have a invisible shield and a bumper on the iPhone 4.

Was having antenna issues and this has solved that, and also am afraid of scratching the glass, but I guess it's shattering that is the problem now as scratching is really hard to do it seems :)

Love the bumper... I have black/black and it adds a nice "grip" to the phone.

Jury is still out on the Zagg shield. I had to order a new set (free just pay shipping!) as my back got messed up. It has a very "orange peel" look and feel to it, but I can definitely see it helping prevent damage as it is very strong.

The free replacements (minus ~$4 shipping) is very impressive as I've never had a product offer that before... It was also the easiest shield/protector to install with the spray/squeegee combo.

Ironically I found the opposite to be true. I at the wife's family reunion last weekend. The emergency Rocketfish case made my iPhone 4 look like everyone elses. But when I pulled it out of the case to take some pics (and not worry about the flash), suddenly EVERYBODY with a 3G and 3GS wanted to play with it.

I'll have to admit I was pretty nervous about a group that had been drinking beer at a cookout all day passing it around a patio deck like a hot potato playing with it.

My case is all about protection over form. It's a tool, not an accessory.

is your shirt made of diamonds?

Ha! No. Just a nice soft business shirt. Two light scratches - I couldnt believe it. They are hard to see in certain light but they are still scratches. My 3G never had any. I wonder if the wife would notice if I switched our backs. Hers is in a case all the time. heheh. :D

This thread has turned into another in fighting fanboi vs reality argument!!!!

I love Apple products and have owned many from desktops and laptops to ipods and iphones but i still use a case!

Yes I think the design of apple products is fantastic... but i want to protect that design from accidents, so i use a case!

The phones are not 100% scratch resistant, apple couldnt possibly test EVERY situation that your phone could come into, and sometimes even what they have tested would still result in damage, may it be a scratch or worse, in the real world.

Stop flaming users for having a case and leave this thread for those who wish to discuss the benefits and their opinions on cases available!

Is anyone considering The Vapor by Element? It's the only one I'm liking so far here are some pics.

It's a little pricy at $79.95, but it's frakin sexy!

They are taking pre-orders here if anyone is interested. It will be available July 12.

Sexy, but over-engineered and $80 for a phone case. Bahahahahahaha. I'd rather go naked and spend $199 on a replacement phone if it comes to that.

See, I'm the exact opposite. I like to go camo b/c I don't want everyone palming my toys w/ their unwashed hands. If a case makes it look like I have a boring phone when I pull it out, job done. :) People can get their own damn iPhone or iPad...arguably iPad a little harder to camo.

I don't need a case I just think something to help with a positive grip while taking photos and videos could be good. I could see myself dropping it with sweaty hands or something.

What do you guys think about the invisi shield? --> http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield/apple-iphone-4-cases-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php

anyone have the full body cover up? Is it worth it? Does it make the iphone feel plasticy?

Thanks
Rioch

I got the full body invisibleSHIELD. The holes seem to not be cut very well.

On the back, the camera hole is huge, but the bottom of the hole touches the outer lens of the camera. The rest of the back shield is perfectly aligned.

On the front, I could never get the huge gaping hole for the home button to line up properly. I ended up pulling it on and off so much that dust finally got behind the shield. I set up an RMA for it since it wasn't necessarily an installation issue, but rather a manufacturing defect.

It does add a little bit of a 'plasticy' feel to it, but I like it. The back of the phone is now rubberized and won't slide around as easily if you're crazy enough not to have a bumper or some type of other case. It looks like it has an orange peel texture to it, but I can't feel it with my fingers.

The only other issue is there are bubbles forming around the edges of the back shield. They weren't there to begin with, but are now appearing 5 days later... I may end up replacing both the front and back when I get the replacement kit in. I think it may be due to the bumper case rubbing it, but I'm not entirely sure.

For $25, it should certainly be better, but on the other hand, you do get free lifetime replacements (but must pay for shipping).

-----------------------

On another note... I really want to get rid of this glass back. I hope that some company will make a new, rubberized back for the phone that screws in place of the old back. That would be awesome!
