Why would anyone want a white one? - looks like a heart monitor, or they're the same people who think white limos are cool (they aren't).
:D:D:D But they were very cool in 1985!

I like this quote from Mossberg's review:

"I don’t know how it compares with the human retina, but I do know that, just as Apple claims, text on the screen shows no jagged lines, even when expanded to giant size."

How can this guy can make a living reviewing tech for WSJ and still write something this stupid?? Did he get jagged lines when he zoomed in text on his 3GS? This is as bad as when people confuse RAM and hard drive space. With his job he should know better. Much better.

Can't wait for July when I get my (black) iPhone4!!

It's not a smartphone if you get zero AT&T signal at home. This isn't the middle of nowhere, this is Pasadena. T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint - all full bars.

AT&T.

Nothing.

So sorry Apple - because you won't role it out with other providers - it's not even on my short list of possible smart phones.

I'm so sorry you get awful service where you are at, but I'm in 3G everyday all day in Southwest Florida. AT&T is by far the best carrier out here. And when I lived in Utah I had 3G all day everyday. It's a little strange that the service sucks in Cali and NY, but don't assume its like that everywhere.

Haha, I noticed that part too and wondered if he was high or something. Then I actually zoomed some text all the way in on my iPad. Whoa, it was jaggy as heck, especially italics. You have to squint a bit, but especially on italic "l"s, it's like there's a hill of marching ants crawling up the letters.

Seems he knew what he was talking about after all. :)

I stand corrected! :D;)

I get a bit iffed whenever people complains about that the iphone "drops calls" as it were a flaw in the design of the iPhone.
I live in sweden and bought the 3G 2 years ago when they first got here, and in that time I've had 1, maybe 2 dropped calls.

A large swedish newspaper sent the iPhone to a well respected research firm that specializes in measuring cell phone radiation and signal strength, and their verdict was that signal wise the iphone doesn't fare any better or worse than other phones on the market.

Dropped calls is a problem that stem from high volume of subscribers per cell, building occlusion and signal backtalk in city areas, when I was in NYC with my 3G I experienced what many US users has experienced from the get go, it was terrible to stand in the middle of Manhattan and see "no signal" on the display.

Anxious After These Reviews

I loved Walt, Xeni and Joshua's reviews. Walt's video review was fantastic. Xeni's humor and amazing photography with the iPhone 4 was fabulous.

Joshua's is the one I bookmarked. His really made me anxious about the iPhone 4, whereas before, I wasn't. Now i am salivating.

Joshua is the only one who took pics of the 3GS and 4 to demonstrate the difference in thickness. He also details the screen resolution in photos. But the best part, and the reason I bookmarked his review to share is because of his Face Time demonstration with Ed. Oh - my - Goodness!

We saw it demonstrated by Steve Jobs, but this was a real-world demo. To see a real conversation, bumps and all, allowed me to imagine doing that with my friends and family or business associates far away. I loved how Ed's kids were able to speak to Joshua, and how Joshua could see them.

I always call my mom and hear people in the background, but only see these people about once or twice a year. To be able to call and see them as I speak is going to be awesome.

I also like that the reviewers say it feels like quality in your hands. I haven't been impressed with the new design, as to me it looks plain, but via these photos and reviews, I'm understanding now. I have a Xootr kick scooter, which is the luxury Mercedes of kick scooters compared to the Razor scooters. So I take it the iPhone 4 is just that - the Xootr :)

I can't wait for the 24th now...of earlier if I'm one of those lucky ones.

I like android and the iPhone. To me, it doesn't matter what the reviews say on any phone because I know what I'm getting. With android, you get a phone that integrates flawlessly with google stuff (gmail, maps, navigation, voice, etc). With the iphone you get great integration with apple stuff.

The iphone 4 does nothing to sway would be android phone users away, and the people who want an iPhone were already going to buy this anyway.

Anyone doubting the poorer performance of iOS4 vs iOS3 on 3G iPhones should check out the vid on Daring Fireball. Safari was snapper though! 37% faster. Everything else took a huge hit in performance.

After reading Pouge's review, I didn't get any sense that he actually had a preview phone to review!

Pretty good reviews; still the AT&T issues are troublesome for me, though I don't experience them at home, work or here in the San Francisco Bay Area, I have experienced dropped calls, slow 3G and slow WiFi connections, and the occasional dead spots at other places that I travel to or visit with my 3GS. I'm going on vacation for one week to San Diego/Trabuco Canyon beginning July 1st - July 9th; and again at the end of the month in Palm Springs. I'll keep everyone posted as to my findings...

You are right this is a problem specific to the US. I am a Swede but live in New York since quite a few years now. It is astonishing how much mobile phone networks suck here compared to Europe or at least Sweden. Even on a good day far away from NYC call quality is nowhere near as good as with my ancient Ericsson phone back home 15 years ago. From what I read they seem to get it right in densely populated areas in Asia so my guess is that the companies here are just cutting corners with their tech.

In short: Anybody outside of the US can probably safely ignore all this talk about iPhones and dropped calls.

I agree with you. I didn't experience dropped calls at home, but while I'm at work or other places, I dropped calls all the time. This is on my iPhone 3GS and Nexus One. It's part of the reason why I'm planning on switching to Verizon here soon. Their android phones, while not up to the quality of the iPhone, are good enough for me, as long as I have phone that works as a phone.

i have a feeling people who ordered black ones are gonna be disappointed.
apple is clearly making the white one if walt already has one.
im willing to bet lunch day it'll be out.
and kinda squashes the rumors of a verizon white one.. thats clearly an iphone 4 on at&t

i'm sorry but i do not understand anything you said...

excellent reviews overall but i also welcome the haters - you really need to feel confident using whatever "smart phone" or device you wish.

as for me, i both personally and professionally find the iphone the most effective and pleasurable for me.

our differences are what makes life interesting and so i hope that android continues to do well and drive apple to continue to technologically innovate.

less than 18 hours until i and my wife have our new iphones!

I live in NYC, and with one exception, my 3GS reception has been fantastic.

For one year, around the entire 2009, my calls started dropping a lot when I was home. I'd lived there 3 years prior without any issues. It was so bad that after I moved, I got a LAN line. But in my new place (lower floor, same area), I haven't had any dropped calls.

The problem is all the real viable competitors, pre, evo etc, come out on a second tier network, Sprint.

Verizon is such a hostily run company that their whole culture is bad for users, so they just end up with a subpar experience from a smartphone standpoint point no matter what they do.

That is why it cracks me up when people bag on AT&T. AT&T may have issues for some people with coverage, but Verizon has core and fundamental business policies that are flawed and continued to be flawed. These same policies are the reason why they did not get the iPhone in the first place, and why they may never get the iPhone, at least until their is a massive change in how Verizon is operated.

Verizon is happy to confuse the customer with the android commodity clustereff. They have no care or consideration about providing the best hardware or best experience...

Well it not California but San Francisco. I live in Northern California in the Central Valley(about 2 hours east from San Francisco and 45 min south of Sacramento and I have no problem.. The only place in my city that has a died space but it happens to ALL cell providers... I been to the bay area and I had 4/5 bars every where I go.. I have friends that gone all day and was all over San Francisco without a problem..

I glad Florida is good because I plan to move to Clearwater area...

This is always strange to me as well. I live in NJ, and I am regularly in NYC. I have not had any problems that derail my impressions of the iphone. I think in an megalopolis there will be some issues with network...hell with that many people there are issues with everything.

I have my phone reserved for store pick-up...had to do my phone and wife's under separate apple ids. She received a reminder email where I did not. I have the confirmation email, but no follow up. I BETTER GET MY PHONE. I have been chubbed since pre order day

While I agree Verizon's coverage may be better, I have had nothing but misery with AT&T recently, especially with regards to the iPhone monopoly. AT&T knows they have a hot product that most will own despite extremely spotty coverage. As such, they've become very arrogant and cocky with their contractual agreements, lack of decent customer support and an overall disinterest in investing the billions from selling iPhones into a better network. I used to defend AT&T as I had a nightmare experience with Verizon which prompted me to leave to Cingular after almost a decade with their company.

In the end, they're all companies who are in it for the money. Customer service has become a thing of the past. Having worked in retail for years after college, I know all too well that some customers may be arrogant, but that doesn't give a company the right to treat their client base with such blatant disregard for their services.
