but Wait There's more

Apple did ask the FCC to hold off publication of their approval for a month so there must be a bit more under the bonnet than has been revealed....

You know, after reading a couple of these reviews, and the associated user comments, its become quite apparent to me that android fan boys are, in fact, quite worse than Apple fan boys. I didn't think it was possible.

Yet these individuals drink more android cool-aid in a day than what Steve jobs dishes out during a year, and then go to these tech sites and harp and extol android like its the second coming of Christ. It's actually quite nauseating really, I mean the same goes for Apple fan boys; when are people going to realize its just a phone?

I can't believe anyone would become a fan or try to dignify or justify their purchase of a mobile phone through overzealous posting on the Internet... I mean, nobody really cares why you think your purchase is the greatest achievement of mankind, and why are you justifying the purchase of a phone in the first place? I find it all rather stupid really, it seems the concept of buying a phone for your needs suddenly became a pissing contest on who's phone is "best."

With that said, I must say, the new iPhone does really look nice. While there's a bunch of things Apple could improve, it appears as if Android is going to push Apple to release quality phone/software for some time (not that the previous releases weren't quality).

honestly, I was considering jumping ship to android, but after my g/f got an android phone, I was quickly turned off. The "apps" I saw for it were bush league at best, it was buggy, even after 2.1. I would pick my old and outdated 3g over it any day of the week, so the iPhone4 is really a no-brainer

Painful for many

1.painful for me 'cuz I ordered on the 15th but got bumped to July 8 delivery.

2. painful for the EVO-(EMO?)-kiddies and the fAndroids with all the attention this sick new iPhone is gonna be getting the next few weeks. :p

I noticed a trend in all of these media reviews...

All of the reviews say the iPhone 4 is clearly the best,
that Android isn't far behind,
and that the iPhone will never realize it's intended potential because the AT&T network is bogging it down.

It's not a smartphone if you get zero AT&T signal at home. This isn't the middle of nowhere, this is Pasadena. T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint - all full bars.

AT&T.

Nothing.

So sorry Apple - because you won't role it out with other providers - it's not even on my short list of possible smart phones.

Yup Apple will be really sorry for missing out on one sale.... They are really trying hard to sell these phones and no one is biting...

Wait a minute.....

I look forward to hearing more about the phone. But I have the same concern as the first review. If Apple keeps updating once a year vs several times a year from their competitors, they will be passed. The good news is that this pushes Apple to get better and better. Competition rocks. So glad we have it in our US carriers.....oh wait. ;)

but don't assume its like that everywhere.

I don't. I simply KNOW it to be like that here, rendering it worthless as a smartphone. I've not heard ONE person with a positive thing to say about AT&T in the LA ara. Most of the people I know with iPhones in this area are dumping them for Android.

Back in the UK - I had an iPhone on Orange. I refused to get one whilst it was O2 exclusive because I knew how bad their network was in the areas I'd be using it. Once it was opened up to many more carriers, I got one. It's now available on I think 4 or 5 carriers in the UK.

Why Steve will not do the same here I don't know. He IS losing sales as a result - that I promise you.

It's horrendous in Los Angeles and San Diego as well. It's so bad most people text or email, hardly any one uses their iPhone as an actual phone in SoCal.

I'm glad the entire world revolved around Southern California....

I for one. in the Southeastern part of the US, has great service with AT&T. Yes, the internet can be a tad slow at times, but I've used Verizon's internet before and it wasn't nothing to brag about. Although their 3G service was more widespread, it wasn't faster than AT&T's.. at least it sure didn't feel like it. The only time I have problem with my service is when I go into very rural areas.. and I am rarely in those areas.

I also just read a press release a couple months ago that AT&T is working on upgrading over 200 cell towers in my state alone to 3G in the 2010 year. So its getting better.

With 2 year contracts...does it even make sense to update several times a year? I would think that would piss off those with an outdated phone in 5 months.

I understand that people are pissed at AT&T. Heck, I see drop calls here and there. But, for data usage, AT&T seems to be better in the Bay Area (Northern Cali). I mean, when you get service :)

So, when the iPhone comes to Verizon, I'll be torned between wanting to make phone calls and getting good data rates.

So, why buy a phone that's a horrible phone?

Forget major diseases - science should look for a cure for the "I found something shiny on the Internet" problem. ;)

At least Fandroids have some valid reasons... but AT&T fanboys are the worst of all!

That really sucks. I can't say I'd be willing to buy an iPhone if my service was that bad. Good thing it isn't!

LOL true dat, true dat. I moved back east so it's not so terrible in NY. A lot of people just love the device, it's like crack. :)

From what I've been told by someone I met in LA who used to work for Cingular before AT&T took over, Cingular was leasing many of their towers to T-Mobile to stave off bankruptcy. Just before the deal with AT&T was finalized, Cingular renewed many of those leases, especially in the SoCal region. Couple that with an overloaded data and voice network, as well as many towns such as Beverly Hills refusing to approve additional towers, it became a logistical nightmare. You could literally walk a block and go from 5 bars, to no service, to roaming (the infamous "o" icon), to five bars, all in the course of a few minutes.

I know AT&T is switching over from 1900 MHz to 850 MHz, but it's been a slow process in certain cities. Some claim it's making a difference. Time will tell. Either way, having the iPhone on another carrier can only be a win/win. It would allow those to have the iPhone on their preferred network and the customers who may leave AT&T may lessen the burden on their system (and may make pricing plans more competitive).

That's the thing - I KNOW it to be that bad. I have an iPad 3G. No bars at all at home ( thankfully, I have WiFi here ).

I'm not willing to buy an iPhone when it's rendered totally impotent by an incompetent network.

I love reading the angry comments from Android users on all ove these reviews. Is it me or did Windows users buy Android handsets suddenly?!

LOL! I gotta say, Android has taken fanboyism to new heights. You can't find an iPhone story anywhere on the Web where the comments (if available) aren't filled with "EVO RULZ!" or "ANDROID FTW!!!"

People gripe about Apple fanboys, but the Android Army takes evangelism to infinity and beyond.

I can't wait to see the astroturfing campaign MS rolls out for Windows Phone Series 7 (or whatever they're calling it this week).

Funny you mention that as so many friends in LA, myself included, barely got a signal if at all in their homes. Most of us had to have a landline as many worked from home.

Question about activation;

My son will be in line early thursday morn at a smaller country walmart in rural east Texas. They said they will sell them at 8:00 am but will activate them at 9:00 am.

My question is; Can he purchase at 8:00 and bring it home and activate it? He already has a 3G and probably has iTunes 9.2.

Thanks, Mick

well crap

I hate to have to ignore this site, as I hit it multiple times daily, but as a Verizon customer who will not even consider switching, I cannot bear to keep reading all the iPhone reports. This is driving me crazy and Android looms large on the horizon...

I assume they mean THEY will activate the phone.

Activations happen in store now, unless if you ordered online.
