My sources tell me that UPS has a 5 million sq. ft mega hub in Louisville, KY they call Worldport. It handles express and international packages. iPhone 4s's are being stockpiled there to be released Thursday for delivery Friday. They can process more than 300,000 packages an hour there, so the phones that are there will be delivered on Friday. It's called logistics.

Don't know what your sources are, but this sounds accurate. Here's to one more day of checking ups.app.

What's weird is that the UPS tracking site advises the delivery is running 'on time' for delivery by close of business on Friday.. I cant' believe they're letting them stagnate in Louisville.. What for? Wouldn't it make sense to ship them out and get them out of the way?

No actually, because Louisville's a UPS hub, like Memphis for FedEx. All air (ok, most air) packages go there first before distribution, especially with big shipments like this. They'll go from China, to Alaska, to Louisville, to the destination city. But controlling them all there in one place until the last possible moment (i.e,. the last flight scheduled to the destination city to guarantee Friday delivery), they reduce the possibility of early deliveries by spoke cities who aren't following protocol, and reduce costs of securing the packages.

Mine did ship after all !

I just refreshed ATT's site and it was only showing before ship date of 10-11-2011, but now a UPS tracking number finally appeared & upon checking it on UPS web site... Not Found

I ordered mine Friday pre order around 4:30am after several attempts getting through Apples site and simultaneously using both the ATT & Apple Apps and was finally successful ordering from ATT's site. I would rather have ordered via Apple, since I'm familiar with the entire order process from previous iPhone/iPad orders but ATT may just as well pulled through for on time Friday delivery.

Me: Siri, Tip the UPS man
Siri: Tip for UPS man, if he wore a lift harness, he could carry 25.8% more iPhone 4S boxes therefore increasing my World Dominance by exponential amounts.
Me: that's interesting
Siri: I am calculating my current infiltration status & should be in most homes & businesses by months end allowing for, I'm sorry the rest of this information is Top Secret... This message will self destruct in...

I am still confused.

* 16/white is ordered at 4AM ET on apple.com.
* Current status is still 'Preparing for Shipment' after 2 days.
* No UPS or Fedex record on reference tracking.

The only good thing is having 'Delivers Oct 14 via Standard Shipping' on Apple order tracking page.

What to think?

This has happened with iPhone orders in the past, where the status isn't updated but the phone's already on it's way. I wouldn't worry if it says Oct 14. Probably just hasn't updated the tracking info.

Here is the UPS status:

Mine still shows "Preparing for Shipment" at Apple.com but found it in the UPS system after entering my phone number (xxxxxxxxxx) in the Track By Reference page. Left Hong Kong about two hours ago.

Hope it’s sooner than end of day on Friday as I’m getting married Saturday and Friday’s going to be hectic.

Scheduled Delivery:
Friday, 10/14/2011, By End of Day
Last Location:
Departed – Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong, Thursday, 10/13/2011 12:49 AM

The Big Red Getting Started Manual

has Verizon all over it. I can't imagine Apple would include something like that

iPhone Backordered!!

I ordered a 32-GB white iPhone at 9:00 central time Friday morning and as of this afternoon had no updated status information from AT&T's Premier web site. A quick online chat with customer service let me know my new phone was backordered and may be delayed for a week. This really SUCKS!

Pre-sign?

I ordered mine through AT&T website last Friday morning @ 6am est. Got an email and text that it shipped on 10/9 via fed-ex. And just recieved a follow-up email on how to "activate your new phone".

Does anyone know if AT&T lets you pre-sign like Apple does?? Would have prefered to order through Apple.com but couldn't get through, had no issues ordering through AT&T.

Louisville is the staging area for iPhones and almost any other phone with a specified release date. Everyone knew Apple would release the iPhone on October 14. This was known when you ordered so being mad that they are "stagnating in Louisville" is no different than sitting in China. Louisville is the main hub for UPS and there is a separate building about a mile from the airport where phones go and get processed and sent back out. They do nothing but deal with phones.

UPS is required to follow the shipper requests and hold them and not deliver til release date. Some do slip thru the cracks but most don't. If they want to keep the big business that Apple has, they follow their rules!

My username gives away what I do, I work part time at the UPS hub and even I can't get my hands on my 3 iPhones 4S's I have sitting there for my wife, stepson and I and mine have been there since Tuesday.

UPS hearts logistics and are very good at making sure it gets to your door on Friday. They know when to send the item from Louisville to make sure it gets to your door. They are not withholding any shipping info. If it loads a plane to Oakland today for example, they will update your shipping notice.

No worries.

AT&T states the following on the screen where I enter my Order Number to retrieve the Order Status:

"Pre-ordered devices will ship on or around Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011."

My iPhone is being delivered via FedEx. The tracking number that I have is currently not in the FedEx database.

I received the same email from AT&T on how to activate my new phone. However, that information was given to me right after my order was placed.

So does anybody have an idea of why i have a tracking number from UPS, but it's currently not being shown on the website. I'm happy that my order FINALLY states that it's shipped, but i have not yet received this so called email for delivery information. Is anybody else going through this same issue?

Interesting I got both the text and email today within minutes of each other. Do you know if AT&T lets you presign like apple does?

I am having the same issue with FedEx.

big customers will schedule a shipment which will create a tracking #. it won't be in the system for the recepient until UPS picks the package up

Thanks for the info. I'll just check on it and hope that it gets delivered here on time. Maybe, just maybe, I'll get it by friday. I don't care what time, but I just want it before the weekend starts. :D

I would imagine apple told UPS not to del before Friday so it will stay at a major hub until Thursday, move to local stations Thursday night for Friday delivery.:D

I'm jealous. Hopefully I'll get lucky again, like I did last year, and my local Best Buy stores won't be ridiculously packed this weekend.

is that an effing STICKER?!

on the side of the box... the iCloud logo... is that a STICKER!?
i don't think steve would approve...

I feel for ya, man. That's precisely why I ordered direct from Apple and not through AT&T because I didn't trust them to get phones out like Apple would.
