vast majority? i don't see it. comments and reactions to rumors shouldn't have to always be prefaced with 'well, i know this is a rumor but...." people just react, mostly with the understanding that a hypothetical 'X or Y would mean Z to me.' seems silly to jump into the thread and deride people as a precursor.

Look at the share price if you want an indication. Apple share always ramp up to the Keynote and then drop afterwards because people set these unrealistic expectations of what will be announced. Even the original iPhone wasn't good enough to meet expectations and thus saw stock drop. Sites like this lead people to believe the kitchen sink will be included with each new release and then they're let down when it's not.

Yes. Because the cost of losing customers pissed About the lack of a headphone jack PLUS the bad PR about it is less than what they would earn in...adapters.

Jesus man where do people get these ideas from? The 30 pin connector was old technology that NEEDED to be updated.

why would it need to be updated? also removing it all together isnt really an update lol

I agree. I don't get it either. I'm not all that fussed about the lack of a headphone jack. I just use Apple headphones anyway. Only problem is, what if I want to listen to music AND charge my phone?
I think there will be an adapter available for purchase from Apple, and other MFI adapters available from third parties for less.

I probably won't be getting an adapter. I seldom if ever use headphones while I'm charging my iPhone. If it came in the box it would just be wasted on me.

Wow, I thought I was the only one cursing to this stupid design for having the power button on the opposite side of the volume button. How many times I thought that Ive is either losing it or he simply doesn't use the phone he designs. He probably thought that since the 6 is taller than 5, people would have a hard time reaching the power button at the top, so let's move it to the side. Guess what? Every time I want to adjust the volume, I end up squeezing the power button. Failed UI designed by the world renowned designer. It proves that even the best can make mistakes.

You're blaming Ive because you can't learn from experience?

Since it seems that the iPhone 6/6S form factor and overall design is staying pretty much intact, Apple should call this iteration the iPhone 6SS and spare us a keynote.

I think the iPhone 7 will be different enough to warrant a keynote. The iPhone 5 looked similar to the iPhone 4S, but it was still different enough (larger display). This time it will be a missing headphone jack that Apple will have to explain to the masses why it's a good change as well as a dual-lens camera. That is if the 4.7" iPhone 7 gets it because it might be an exclusive feature with the larger iPhone Plus model, despite what this supposed 4.7" iPhone 7 case shows. Of course, missing visible antenna lines will also make a noticeable visual change. OK, if that's about it, then visually it can be seen as a disappointment by some, but maybe it's time that we value the substance of our iPhones rather than using it as some kind of misplaced status symbol that everyone and their mom now own. iPhones have joined the ranks of iPads, MacBooks, Macs and a lot of other smartphones, laptops, etc. as something we use to improve ourselves, not decorate ourselves.

so far zero rumours about this phone make it a tempting upgrade from my 6. but you what? thats ok.

contemporary smartphones are like, 100x more powerful than the first iPhone, which was impressively capable in its own right. modern hardware is already a beast. i'd like to see them put more focus on software efficiency.

that said, i think the 4.7" could use a 1080p screen bump as an intermediate step until they get OLED screens in 2018. the screen is the most showy part of these devices, and apple's offerings are more than decent, but lack the wow factor that pretty much everyone else is offering.

Think about Square, and all the other card readers, that will have to b updated. Though, I would assume, the readers would work better, and be able to do more, plugged into the Lightning port.

What will you use when Android phones drop the 3.5mm Jack too?

So you must have a 128GB iPhone now, and all of your music is in lossless file formats? Why would the elimination of a headphone jack prevent you from using headphones in airplane mode? Lightning headphones or an adapter wouldn't be affected at all, and I use my Wireless headphones in airplane mode all the time, with BT on. I also share my BT headphones with other people's phones, by simply and easily pairing it with their device. A simple an inexpensive adapter also allows any headphones to be used with the Lightning port, as well as Lightning headphones with 3.5mm jacks.

Don't really see a problem here.

The problem here is having to buy yet another adapter for a feature that used to just work with the phone. I'm not going to get too worked up over it until we find out this is real. But if it is real, and they are getting rid of the headphone jack that means I will need to spend extra money on an adapter I didn't need before, and I will need to carry that with me too for whenever I want to use my headphones with a normal headphone connector on them. Adapters suck, they are just one more thing you need to buy and keep track of. I don't get why people find this so hard to understand.

I'm still having a hard time buying into the idea of replacing the 3.5 jack with another speaker.

Maybe with the second speaker, the sound quality will be so completely amazing and remove the need for all bluetooth speakers?

If not, it doesn't sound like a good tradeoff. Losing something I use constantly (simple headphones) for something I use almost never (playing through speaker)

For the first time after I moved to Apple world, I am disappointed. This is a bad decision by Apple. No more 10-15 pound OK headphones. The other option will be to use Bluetooth headphones, requiring more charging.. This is so stupid by Apple. Sorry. I will consider not upgrading and then perhaps when my iPhone 6 gets old, might use a phone that has a real 3.5mm jack.

You're blaming Ive because you can't learn from experience?

No, he is blaming Ive for a stupid design decision. A design choice that is worse on the 6s+. Now, Ive will remove the earphone jack. Another dongle to carry (any maybe have to buy?) until such time as headphones offer BT 4 or a lightning plug. Why does Apple need to lead the way on this?

The media is going to go nuts if the design stays largely the same!

Four years is too long for the same design.
4 years ?
Current iPhone design is from late 2014...

Looks like it will have the same dimensions with the mega big top/bottom bezels and that odd home button parallel to the volume button. Featuring a thinner body and less battery life.
I still have to see an iPhone with LESS battery life than its predecessor ...

FUD spreaded on such a continuous way that people start believing it.

I rather have a headphone jack than a stereo speaker. I really don't use the speaker of my iPhone that often, so at least for me there is not point in this. Also I'm not a huge fan of the lightning port in general, the cable disconnects to easily and I have to clean the port every other month to ensure the cable makes a connection.

If they get rid of the SIM slot they can put the 3.5mm on the side. That way you could never put it in your pocket with anything attached. Finally! Apple obsoletes the pocket!
[doublepost=1457556912][/doublepost]
Stereo speakers on the same side of the phone? Well, that's pretty stupid.

Don't worry. Apple will use some insanely great DSP technique that will utilize the two speakers to trick your brain into thinking you are in front of a 10 meter high speaker stack - except with no bass.

I can tell you with certainty that the design has not been totally finalized. They haven't begun production on the external casing at this point (this from friends at Apple, though they're very close) and there's a reason you don't see the guys that made the case this article centered around, ramping up big production of it yet.
Well, I got friends (hard to believe, I know ;-) who build things for others. And since we are both talking out our hats based on anecdotes, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

"Stereo speakers" seems funny when they're so close
The Nintendo DS line does some neat things with sound from very small close together speakers. Maybe Apple has some algorithms that can give a unique positional experience. Or maybe they are just there for bedside mode, which is how I use my phone at night. Or maybe they are not both speakers. I just hope Apple isn't designing a solution and looking for a problem. Will be interesting to find out.

I really don't like the idea of Apple removing the 3.5mm headphone jack. I don't want to have to pay $30 for an accessory in order to listen to my music. Everything I own is based on 3.5mm. My car doesn't have bluetooth.

Apple isn't know for throwing in free adapters with their devices, so I expect this to be the same in the case of headphones. Sorry Apple, but I can't buy your phones any more if one of the most used features of the phone is taken away from me or begins to be treated like a luxury that only people who pay extra can enjoy.

I know it's still a rumor, but this removing of the headphone jack has been a persistent rumor for a long time and seems very likely that a near-future iPhone will ditch the 3.5mm jack.

Yes. Because the cost of losing customers pissed About the lack of a headphone jack PLUS the bad PR about it is less than what they would earn in...adapters.

Jesus man where do people get these ideas from? The 30 pin connector was old technology that NEEDED to be updated.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Omg, it is infuriating listening to the illogical ranting of every grumpy Gus with a five year brewing anger issue from having to replace their 30 pin, trying to pretend like a lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter won't be included.
OF COURSE it will be included. Sure as eggs. Duh. This one is a no brainier.
Many things can be said about Apple... but that they won't cater to musicians & music lovers ain't one of them.
There is not one single audiophile grade bt headset in existence.... meaning bt headphone music listening is DEFINITELY a subpar experience. Last I heard- not only was Apple NOT all about subpar product experiences, but also they had repeatedly taken steps to have iTunes music in higher & higher quality audio formats.
But now all these RIDICULOUS armchair analysts are so so so certain that Apple have lost their collective minds, & suddenly seemingly WANT to destroy their bread and butter.... 80% of their revenue, by making ignorant horrible choices on iPhone that could be abated with the inclusion of an adapter that at most would cost them $1.
This is NOT about promoting bt as "the future of headphones" (a laughable statement)... this is about Apple standing out as the unique design company. Future: one port MacBook, one port iPhone, one port iPad.
The 1st is already here! We'll see with the new regular size iPad update if they do it this year on that segment, & it's going down this September on iPhone. Finito.

Just thought I'd highlight another one not realising how audio works....

How is it that Audeze Sine headphones that have swappable cables (one cable for using with 3.5mm and one cable for using with Lightning that the user can swap out) sound dramatically better while using the Lightning cable vs when using the 3.5mm cable?

Lightning in the end will sound superior.

It's not like people will have to lug around some massive adapter to use their 3.5mm sets. Does extending the cable 2-3 inches with the adapter really inconvenience people that much? Just leave it permanently connected as if the cable was always that extra 2-3 inches longer, and remove when needed in another device. So hard!

Also, why have 2 ports on a phone that both output audio? Removing redundancy is pretty important when every mm is quite valuable.

thanks apple.
you could also just keep the adapter attached
