So here's there crack... Spore for the iPod Video/Classic is a little buggy (I think we've all come to that conclusion) hence the withdraw of the game from iTunes. In the meantime, for the lucky (or unlucky!) people that have downloaded it, I suggest the following steps to at least make it playable... (note, I've been using a 5th Generation iPod Video - 30Gb)
1. Play your own music (i.e. something from your Library) before you load up Spore
2. Save the game at the end of every level
3. If your own music is coming to an end (i.e. you're coming to an end of an album/playlist), then save the game before the music stops! The game will continue to the next level if your music continues to play...(weird I know...)
4. Even if the game crashes and you have to hold down "Menu + Center Circle" to reset the iPod, the last saved games should still be there.
5. Be patient with the game transitions, sometimes if it looks like it's crashed, it's actually just thinking (very slowly).
I know we shouldn't have have to put up with these workarounds. We've all paid for this game with our hard earned cash. I'm going to submit a "Report A Problem" query on my iTunes purchase and see what I get back from them... I'll provide you an update if I hear anything!
From what I've played so far (I'm on level 8) it's quite addictive and keeps you busy. Really good for the commute to work and when you're waiting around for the bus. Controls are very easy to use and frame rate is very smooth. Battery Life is a big downer... (though I've had my iPod for 3 years now). I fully charged my iPod for the morning and played about 30 mins of Spore + music in the background, battery is now 1/3 full...
Update: I've just sent the following "Report A Problem" on the iTunes Store (UK Version)
Hi,
I downloaded Spore last night and have encountered some issues while playing it on my 5th Gen iPod Video (30Gb):
1. The game does not play if I do not play my own music
2. The game very unstable if you try to save it
3. The battery life is severely affected with this game - after 30mins of gameplay, my battery life is reduced from full to 1/3.
I have to carry out the following steps to make it playable...
1. Play my own music (i.e. something from the Library) before laoding Spore
2. Save the game at the end of every level
3. If my music is coming to an end (i.e. you're coming to an end of an album/playlist), then I have to save the game before the music stops!
4. I have to reset my iPod if the game crashes and then I have to hold down "Menu + Center Circle" to reset the iPod. So far I have done this 5 times in the last day.
When I make any purchase (especially from the iTunes Store and EA), I expect it to meet the minimum standards to which I have agreed to purchase that item upon. So far, I see this as a sub standard product and I recommend that you carry out further functional and product testing before releasing an updated version. I expect that for customers that have already purchased the item to receive a free upgrade and compensation for buying an item that you thought was ready for public release. We are not your Guinea Pigs/Test Rats, please do not treat us like Microsoft treated us before... I am glad that you have withdrawn this from the iTunes Store but I would be grateful for a courtious message for all the customer that have bought the product to receive some information on what actions you are taking to resolve the issue. If no actions are taking place, I would be grateful if you would provide me with a full refund of the purchase.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to your response,
Regards,
Sil-Mon Li
