A lot of over streaming services use + in their name also. I wonder if that contributed to the rebranding. Personally I don’t think it’s the big deal that do many people are trying to make it out to be.

You don't think calling two totally different things the same thing is a problem?

"I like Apple TV"

What am I talking about?

It’s astonishing that someone in such a position of power has never taken two seconds to consider the many contradictions in their TV branding strategy. He says that their app on third-party devices is already called “Apple TV” but that’s simply not true!

The app that provided access exclusively to their subscription service was called Apple TV+. This is what I had on my Xfinity set-top box. It doesn’t let you watch your purchased TV shows and movies.

The app that provided to all your purchased content, as well as the subscription service, was called Apple TV.

There was absolutely a distinction between the two and now it will be impossible to tell the difference without investigating whether the app supports your purchased content or just the paid service.

It’s just baffling that such a well-paid person can’t understand such obvious problems he is creating.
Wow so they don't even provide consistent app experiences. On my LG TV, there's a single Apple TV app which pretty much mirrors the older Apple TV app on the Apple TV box. It has Apple TV+ along with all my other content in Library and a separate Channels tab for other subscriptions.

And then there's the Android version of Apple TV which is limited to Apple TV+ and MLS.

I'm watching Apple TV (content) with Apple TV (App) on Apple TV (hardware)

What's all the confusion?

Did they hire the HBO Max/HBO team for the rebrand?
At least the HBO/HBO Max team had the time of their lives on social media with the changes. They roasted the change back to the correct name harder than anyone. And Twitter won’t let them change their handle back to @hbomax so they just retweet all the HBO Max content from the StreamOnMax account, which is also insanely funny and self-aware.

Meanwhile, Eddy saying with a straight face that anything other than the Apple product page or the Amazon listing calls it the Apple TV 4K is truly laughable in a very unintentional way.

More to the point, this problem was always visible whether it was Apple TV+ or not. Apple decided to name the service, the third-party app for other devices (which is mostly a front end for the streaming service but on select platforms also a way to watch purchased content from iTunes or I guess now, the Apple TV store) , the first-party app on macOS and iOS, and the set-top box the same thing. When the thing to do would’ve been to either rename the box or come up with a better name for the service.

Apple deserves all the jokes made at its expense here as this was a problem entirely of their own making.

I think this is foreshadowing a change in what they decide to call the hardware, or if the hardware will even move forward as the same thing. It makes sense to have the app and the service called the same thing. That's like having the Netflix service on the Netflix app. I wonder if the AppleTV hardware will take on more of a "home" branding.

I'm not convinced we've seen the last of the "+"

I think ADs are coming and the AD-free (or with less ADs) version will eventually be called Apple TV+

Nothing surprises me with Apple anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if they cancel the Apple TV hardware too.

(I would HATE that, to be clear ... LOVE my Apple TV hardware)
I hate my Apple TV hardware. The remote is such a huge piece of garbage that I had to buy a 3rd party remote. The only reason I keep my Apple TV hardware around is that Air Play works better on it than on my Roku hardware.

Exactly! And each TV or set top platform is different. LG and some Samsung's and offer the full experience, including channels. FireTV I think just does Apple TV content and purchases. The Xfinity app (or at least the one on my parents TV that my dad insists on using instead of the LG app or the actual Apple TV) is just Apple TV content, no purchases.

And there is no documented place that shows all the surfaces as far as I can tell.

Great news as this worked so well for Apple Music when Apple decided to neuter the iconic iTunes brand (and app).

Apple Music streaming service? Maybe. The Apple Music app for Mac? Sure. The Apple Music app for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS? Same thing, right? The Apple Music Store? No, wait, that's the iTunes Store, which is located inside the Apple Music app.

So much easier! Especially when Googling issues for any of the iterations of Apple Music since they all mean and pertain to the same thing, right?

Luckily, Apple's Music app, especially for Mac, is feature-rich, intuitive, has an amazing UX, and is so stable one would never have to do any kind of troubleshooting.

According to Cue, many people already referred to Apple TV+ as Apple TV, so the company finally decided to embrace the simpler name.

Cue argued that the Apple TV box is actually named the Apple TV 4K nowadays.
People still call the Movies and TV Store “iTunes.” They should “just decide” to restore the old name.

Generally, people only say “Apple TV 4K” when specificity matters. Usually, you just call it “Apple TV”—just as you usually say “iPhone” unless you need to specify a particular model.

It’s confusing either way. I talk to people about my love of the Apple TV hardware and many think that you have to pay monthly just to use it. I explain that Apple TV+ is a subscription and the Apple TV hardware is just a vehicle for you to stream content.

Now, you’ll sound more like an insane person. You can watch Apple TV content in the Apple TV app on the Apple TV device.

I guess if you explain it as clearly as I just did, it’ll be okay. Most people won’t explain it that clearly, though.

It is being renamed with the 26.1 release. I assume they will update their app on 3rd party devices and update the Apple website around the same time.
Even in the latest 26.1 beta with the new multicolor branding they still call it Apple TV+.
