I still think they're changing the box name upon the next release, likely very soon.

"We just decided," he told host Matthew Belloni.

Seriously? They pay him and the other Execs at Apple how much? To be making decisions based on "We just decided?" Seems like "the best and the brightest" have left the C-Suite.

I'd have to guess that the next hardware that serves the same purpose of the Apple TV will be called something else. Perhaps a smart home hub, perhaps a games console/media console?

It just sets up the Apple TV box to be renamed to something else when the new one comes out. Makes a lot of sense.

This sounds like a way to confuse numbers announced to shareholders by saying Apple TV is on lots of devices. Essentially, the app install base combined with the streaming service to hide to the failing streaming service numbers.

How can you make the already horrible naming convention even worse?

Embrace the confusion.

Apple just keeps getting worse with their naming conventions.

I've never called it Apple TV 4K, as I figure that is a mouthful. I'm not entirely sure that's a great reason to clear up confusion.
Maybe they call it that internally, but I doubt the average non-Apple employee calls it Apple TV 4K, unless they’re trying to sound like a walking advertisement.

I guess on Apple devices, the app is just called TV. At least that’s how it’s labeled on my iPad. Maybe the next Apple TV hardware actually will be renamed, like some here are theorizing.

Call it the Apple Fun Box. lol

It’s astonishing that someone in such a position of power has never taken two seconds to consider the many contradictions in their TV branding strategy. He says that their app on third-party devices is already called “Apple TV” but that’s simply not true!

The app that provided access exclusively to their subscription service was called Apple TV+. This is what I had on my Xfinity set-top box. It doesn’t let you watch your purchased TV shows and movies.

The app that provided to all your purchased content, as well as the subscription service, was called Apple TV.

There was absolutely a distinction between the two and now it will be impossible to tell the difference without investigating whether the app supports your purchased content or just the paid service.

It’s just baffling that such a well-paid person can’t understand such obvious problems he is creating.
Spot on.

I don't think anyone ever calls the hardware 'Apple TV 4K' unless you work in an Apple Store or write tech reviews.
Quite.

The terms "Apple TV 4K" or "Apple TV box" refer to the hardware and are only ever mentioned once in the product's lifecycle - when a consumer buys one. After that, it's never mentioned again and becomes invisible in some hidden place behind or under the TV.

OTOH, "Apple TV" is used daily by everyone in the household to refer to the service that holds the content: "It's on Apple TV". Like a TV channel.

Don't know why anyone thought "Apple TV+" made sense. Good riddance!

Nonetheless, the new name may cause confusion, as there is now an Apple TV streaming service, an Apple TV app, and Apple TV hardware.
Honestly, I don’t think that “+” was doing much to avoid confusion.

Main confusions that I’ve come across are people thinking that:
  • they need to buy an Apple device to get Apple TV(+), and/or
  • subscribing to Apple TV+ gets you everything the Apple TV app advertises
I can’t imagine why Apple would want to allow those sorts of misconceptions, which could result in people giving them money unnecessarily. Oh, wait… :)

Pity, because Apple TV(+) is making some of the best shows on streaming, which deserve better exposure.

Honestly who cares … Apple TV is an eco system with a set up box, an app and a streaming service available … An everyone I know call those elements Apple TV …

I have never missed Jobs more than today, Apple is doomed to repeat the same mistakes by big fat executives and non tech guys at the helm. This time though, I hope they go bankrupt and a new company emerges from its ashes.
