Let me explain something about English and "opinion". "He sux I hate him" is one statement of opinion, and one statement of fact based on your own personal emotion. Those are acceptable, and no one can argue with them. "He has no talent" is not an opinion, it's a statement of fact as "talent" is not a subjective thing. "Talent" is based on some sort of average or surrounding.
Nobody that has ever professionally analyzed talent agrees with this. 100% subjective.

Claiming someone's opinion has been "stated as a fact" ought to be a bannable offense. What ****.

This kind of music is why REAL people hate nitwit teens and 20-somethings running around blasting their garbage ringtones. Lovely.

Because Postal Service is already terrible. I've never heard of Owl City, but if that's true, he must reek.

i'm sure you just forgot to add "in my opinion" at the end of your statement there...

and in my opinion.. you are so wrong about the postal service.. please do tell why you believe they are "terrible"? and what are some of your favorite artists.. just out of curiosity...

Steve had an affinity for analogue devices, machines, textures, etc.

[snip]

The new synthesized ringtones pretty much encapsulate everything I find wrong with iOS7. I understand most people couldn't care less, but I hate to see a company that was once truly inspirational to myself and other designers create mundane experiences.

This is why you don't run Apple. Apple has successfully executed a total revamp of one of the world's most popular operating systems without shooting themselves in the foot (like Microsoft has, with Windows 8 and Metro). You might think that the rich Corinthian leather texture on the Calendar app is awesome, but that's not the point. The operating system needed a change, and that's what happened.

But, I'm sure you don't get that.

And for the rest of you Owl City haters, please go ahead and post a link to music you've composed and performed that's better. I'll be looking.

Grandeur of Apple? Apple sells their iPhones in Walmart and RadioShack now in case you haven't noticed. They're in the business of making money.

my point is, the sounds don't fit the aesthetic. i'd be embarrassed to have most of those alert sounds go off in public. thank god i can make my own.

Sorry to the fans out there but that song is auto-tuned to death. Apple is using this guy? What has happened to Apple's integrity?

Good find! I was always surprised that with Steve Jobs's aesthetic taste that the notification sounds were so bad on iOS (and the Mac for that matter). The iOS 7 sounds are MUCH improved.

I disagree. Prior to iOS7 ringtones were distinctive and sometimes even funny (Robot). The new ringtones all sound like the same "We take ourselves serious now, you know?" new age noise.

Agreed. The sounds on iOS 6 and OS X suck. Especailly compared to Windows / Windows Phone.

I think you'd be surprised at how many artists use auto tune these days, if only slightly since they can't hit the notes.

I don't care for his music either. I could barely finish the album because it was so monotonous, and I think in general most people thought it was too. Haven't listened to his new stuff, besides that one with Carly Rae Jepsen, for that reason either.

But I like the sounds in iOS 7. Some people are throwing out names of better people to do it... Apple had a deadline, and this is a finished product that is going into millions and millions of iOS devices all over the world. This isn't a project you give to a DJ to finish out in the middle of Australia during a tour. And you couldn't give it to an indie who had little knowledge of the mainstream. You don't want someone who's completely burnt out either.

So I think Adam was their best shot, especially as they were scrambling to get iOS 7 finalized. It's so refreshing to hear something other than the Marimba ringtone.

Guy is a complete 'The Postal Service' ripoff and disintegration at a terrible level. This is probably his most notable work I actually think is credible. :apple:

I think it’s funny that they use Adam Young for the sounds, but for the icons they choose the marketing team :p

So the iOS7 mention has gone from his website. Do we think Apple didn't like the fact that he was taking credit for his OWN work , when they wanted it all?

I think the tones are a vast improvement over previous iOS tones BUT Fireflies by Owl City really makes me want to punch someone. I listen to pretty much only dance music in its various guises but this song will never have a place in my music library. The lyrics are just appalling - sounds like a nursery rhyme.

Well color me surprised. I'm certainly not a fan of Owl City, yet I've always praised the iOS 7 ringtones. The iOS 1-6 ringtones were absolutely terrible.

Ideal for insomnia sufferers out there. Sheer dirge. Cheeky sods paying this "artist". Good bluffing there, mate. If you can get paid for farting about on your dad's keyboard. Do it!

I don't understand why people are upset with Apple because Owl City is autotuned.

They used Imogen Heap before and nobody complained about that.

Those are acceptable, and no one can argue with them. "He has no talent" is not an opinion, it's a statement of fact as "talent" is not a subjective thing. "Talent" is based on some sort of average or surrounding. You can say a kid on the high school soccer team has a lot of talent, and he will as a matter of fact have more talent than those around him, or at least be above average. People may hate Kobe Bryant for many reasons, and may hate him as a player because he's a show off, but you can't make an argument that he has no talent. People just don't like how he uses that talent.

You say that an artist (that I don't like but have knowledge of) has no talent and of course, you are wrong. You also confuse synth sounds with "auto tune", which is ridiculous given the amont of synth in voice and sound in many of today's genres. You may not like it, or understand it, but the fact is that the dude has a lot of musical talent. And if you can't accept that and stick with a real opinion like "he sux" than it is not us that needs to "grow up".

I'm sorry but you're wrong. Perception of talent IS opinion just like I stated. Some of my friends think I'm super talented at painting, I know I'm not and so do some other friends. Right there I just proved your theory wrong.

When someone writes lyrics like "Case I'd get a thousand hugs, from ten thousand lightning bugs as they tried to teach me how to dance" I don't consider them lyrically talented.

When someone creates melodies that are barely hummable, I don't consider that talented.

When someone writes songs that sound EXACTLY like all of their other songs I don't consider that talented I consider that a one trick pony.

Why is it so hard for people to see that we all have varying perceptions of talent?

Again, I will reiterate MY perception: The guy is not talented.

It is all nice, but I wish they would come up with a ringtone named "Silent." Starting with my mortgage bank where I have never been late but robocalling me 2 weeks before overdue, and a rash of other spam calls from other marketing companies, I have added them to contacts with a special z- so they stay buried at end. Have to give them some ringtone, but there is no such thing as a silent one, so I elect the least obtrusive. Perhaps I have to make one.

It's all a matter of opinion on whether you like him or not, but again, you can't say he has no talent simply because you personally don't connect with his style of music.

+1

I can't understand how anyone with a basic grasp of English wouldn't get this point. But then, this is the internet...

I'm sorry but you're wrong.

No, they're not.

Again, I will reiterate MY perception: The guy is not talented.

He can play a musical keyboard, therefore he is talented.

I hate Owl City so bad. That guy doesn't have an ounce of talent in my opinion. (Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's successful and lots of people like him) but I personally can't stand his autotuned garbage.

Would you care to send me a link to some of your music so that I can compare?
