huh? what's so hard?
when will they offer more color side pieces?

I'm just saying, "Less is more."

You could have just said.

"Are they planning on selling different colored caps separately."

Instead of,

"Does anyone know what colors they might offer for the side piece that is colored now when you get a case like my red/ black?

In other words, the red piece - what could I swap to and how much? Have they released their plans for this addition?"

I've been lurking this thread as well as the first one that was closed since the first part of August when I first saw a picture of this case on a tech website. I have been coveting this thing ever since. I put in my pre-order request shortly afterward, and have heard nothing yet, but that is another issue. I know alot of folks would like this thing to work right out of the box and I totally agree. For something you pay that much for - it should. So I just want to put that out there right away.

With all blame, conjecture, what ifs and should haves aside, I really think that what archrider has touched upon here is the answer to about 95% (if not 100%) of the problems most have been seeing with the Vapor 4. I believe that a full insulating barrier around the inside of the case - and what it would do to alleviate signal issues for most, if not all radios on the iphone 4 - would be enough to convince a lot of people to keep it. Of course their willingness to modify the case themselves will factor into it until Element realizes (if they haven't already with version 3) that this should be integral to its design, so if you don't even want to consider trying to mod this thing, by all means, send it back or sell it on eBay. But to me, it sounds like such an easy fix for such a major issue. Of course this is all speculation on my part, but it's based on comments from people like archrider and the fact that in the many pictures I've seen of the thing, the padding appears to be way too sparse as well as way too compressible, that I really do think this is a fixable issue for the consumer - if they're willing to give it a try.

With that said, and the fact that I don't yet have a case to try it on, I've done some research on what I thought could be used on the inside of this case. The criteria I used was high impact, compression resistant, non-conductive, one sided foam tape that had to come in a 1/4 inch width (the width of the antenna on the iphone) and be no more than 2mm thick. What I found was 3m Urethane Foam Tape 4116. It comes in the quarter inch width and is 1.6mm thick. With that thickness there will be some compression to get the case on, but I believe if you remove the "high tech" stuff before you apply this, it should compress just enough to provide a nice, tight - but still cushioning - cradle as well as enough standoff between phone and case to prevent any contact between the two. The nice thing about this stuff is that both Home Depot and Lowes carry it - at least they do in Albuquerque.

So, barring me from receiving a third version that addresses this issue, I'll be doing this to my case when it comes with a high level of confidence that it will fix most if not all of the reception problems being seen now.

So now all I need now is someone who already has a case to use as a guinea pig - lol!

I think you'll notice a great deal of improvement in the reception performance of the Vapor if you do use the foam you're talking about. I wish I had known about that foam when I had mine..it sounds like the perfect solution, and one that Element should have implemented from the start. They really tried to take the cheap way out with the minimal foam they used. I noticed it collapsed and that my Vapor touched the metal antenna early on (talked about it way back in post #620 or so of this thread). And with the emails I've received from Element regarding "future versions of the case" (I quoted them back in the thread as well), I'm betting we see that as one of the next versions they release.

Be assured it will-be after White/Rhino receives his long awaited Vapor Case ;).

Haha. Thanks for the good wishes Zornet. But I fear I'm the last priority on Elements list. We might see version 4 in purple and bronze before I see the Black/Black I ordered. I hate bashing them dispite all my colorful comments. I really wanted to like element but I'm getting the feeling they don't like me. Friday is my two month anniversary for paying for sometime I still don't have.

W/R didn't I see you had posted that EC finally had given-up a bonafide new and improved tracking number? Its gotta be on your door step this week .

I've got to tell you, that tape's not easy to get. I went to Home Depot in the San Francisco bay area. Three of their experts never heard of it and couldn't find it. same thing at Goodman's lumber. Internet search usually ends up saying not for retail sale and comes in 36 yard rolls.

I'm considering two sided foam tape with lint proof cloth or the paper on the side touching the phone.

Yeah..... my bust on that. What I saw at Home Depot was not what I thought. On top of being only in 36 yd. rolls @ $22 apiece, I could only find them for sale online in a minimum of 6 roll packages.

the same wider 1" tape is avail at any home depot/lowes - or even grocery stores - look for 3M exterior mounting tape. I buy it all the time for marine projects. lay it out and zip knife it....

They sure did. It doesn't work though. It seems that a lot of their tracking #'s don't work. I find that really weird. They really need to update their shipping system.

Sounds like a great business opportunity. Buy 6, 36 YD. rolls for 22 bucks Ea. Set up a fancy high tech web site. Advertise it as "secret high tech lining" for the wildly sought after Element Vapor 4 case that will actually increase reception. Sell each liner for say $40.00, a steal at only half the price of the case to make it work. Send people an untrimmed foot of the stuff. Retire on the profits.

This reminds me of Kramer and Newman running the pop bottles to Michigan....

I just used this stuff around the inside from the grocery store -

got one more bar at my desk and GPS works slight bit faster acquiring....slit between phone and case a bit wider but still looks fine...

Do you expose the adhesive on both sides of the tape? Does it leave residue on the phone if you remove it? I've used that kind of tape on painted surfaces and just about wrecked the surface trying to remove it.

exposed adhesive on just the case side and goo gone or your finger gets it all off of aluminum (hard surfaces) easily....

Not quite the 4116 stuff, but close. It's a little bit thicker, and the addition of the adhesive cover still in place on one side is probably why you're seeing some gapping. I would just really like to find the one sided stuff so I don't have to deal with that. I will be on a quest next week to find a roll. If I do, I will probably pull a yard off of it for my own use and offer it to someone else interested in using the stuff on their case. And maybe that person could pass it on as well. Aside from running the super high tech lining website that archrider mentioned, I just don't know what I would do with the other 35 yards of the stuff.

This is what the tape looks like, albeit in a 1 inch wide roll.

yeah... try some body shop websites - the VHB tape is actually called "bumper tape" in some circles as it is used to attach car trim....

Maybe we're trying to hard to approximate the "high tech" material used by Element. If we leave their pads to cushion we probably don't need the same thickness. We could trim to size common fabric (upholstery tape) to fit between the Element material. It has decent thickness. It has any color including gray to approximate silver. Cloth next to the Iphone will protect and not damage. I'm pretty sure it will insulate.

Yeah, sorry - that's just the military/engineer/perfectionist in me. Have to have everything up to spec.

For crying out loud why isn't Element Case doing this????? For $80 + they can afford it! Not to mention the money they are making from people like me who funded their production outlays via preorders that they never sent out and never refunded!!!!

After a couple days of use, I've seen absolutely no drop in signal. In fact, many times I have seen 4-5 bars. I am using a luckylabs decal around the edge and don't know if that makes a huge difference.

As far as signal goes, I have seen no change. GPS takes a minute, but it works too. No issues here as described in Larry Greenberg's review (whom I respect). Maybe the insulation inside is very important? lucky labs decal works for me. I have not used it without.

And here's proof!
