Completely agree.
I think in Apple land it just confuses people.

The inside of the walled garden can be very comfortable (until it is not - and by then it's too late)

It also requires thought to recognize how much we don't get - what never gets thought of or made - due to monopolization, control, concentration of all talent, etc.
Yeah, just ask what those MacBook users would think if the macOS starts to ask “do you want to access the content of this folder from app xxx” every single time they open that app and there is no setting to get rid of that confirmation? This is what will happen with walled garden.

Yup m, we officially have an entertainment replacement in the absence of Intel :)
I’m glad Elon Musk decided to weight in on this, especially given how he’s about as qualified to comment on it as that bloke with the dreads what I met down the pub on stalwart night lol
This’ll make for some entertaining bollocks :)

Surprise, surprise--the guy who can't seem to figure out QC on his own products thinks he can run Apple better than Apple can. I guarantee you that if/when Apple ever does create a car, they will not use cheap-o paper thin paint or forget to bolt things together. For example--like, the entire top of the car, Elon. You forgot to screw on the entire top of the car.
Handle the car doors with care. I've seen better plastic on ****** Coby Radios from the early 2000's

Apple Maps is poop though. I'm driving on the free flowing freeway cities away from my destination and it keeps directing me to take surface street so instead of 20 minutes it'll be >1 hour drive.
Yes it does that on my phone as well - when I have selected "Avoid Highways". You might want to check your settings....

The more I hear from Mr. Musk, the more I wonder how a person with such terrible business sense has been so successful, and the more I dislike him.

Let's be honest, Steve Jobs was hardly a voice of sanity. This isn't about personalities, it's about innovation. It takes a different kind of person to innovate for the masses. It's not an excuse for their behavior just an acknowledgment of their contribution to industry and humankind.
Not all people who’ve contributed to innovations actually benefitted human kind, this includes radical ideals.

Last I checked I could if I wanted buy a second hand iOS or Mac device I could use as it comes. Unlike Tesla whom whom remove features purchased by the previous owner only to try and charge for those same features again for the new owner.

Apple allows Amazon to sell products through their app, because it was a good business decision to do so given the wide variety of products they offer that fall far outside of the tech sphere.
Amazon as a general sales portal is not comparable. The Amazon app that is downloaded is not a product, and physical catalog items don't connect to the app in any meaningful way. Also, they are mainly physical items that need to be inventoried at great expense, and carry entirely different margins from software. Kindle and Spotify are more comparable, where the orderable digital items are essentially in-app purchases that plug into the base app.

The Epic trial started in May, but the case started last summer — why is he making these comments now?

Both companies reported earnings this week. AAPL has a P/E ratio of about 28, whereas TSLA is about 170. Both companies will become competitors at some point. Which company is in a much stronger financial position?

I believe the true motivation behind his recent comments comes down to one word — envy.

Android reaches a higher percentage of the population than iPhone. It just happens that those that actually buy apps instead of pirate them tend to be in the iPhone userbase. Businesses want that paying customer base for free so of course they are going to complain and call it a "tax"

Businesses can choose to not support iPhone. It's not required by law that everything supports iPhone. Everything is a choice. Support iOS. Don't support iOS. Support Android. Don't support Android. or Support both. Its all a choice just like the choice users make when they decide which device to buy.

I'm tired of people trying to force their choice as a business onto Apple and have it override my choice (and a billion+ other users choice) to use a walled garden OS.

Eliminating Apple's walled garden is the anti-trust/anti-competitive move as it will just make iOS the same as Android and everything else out there. Apple's competitive advantage is its closed secure system.
I love these generalized comments about Amdroid users. No facts to back it up, just some cat on the internet. There are plenty of Apple users running pirated apps.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter today to criticize Apple's App Store fees in a tweet that sides with Epic in the ongoing Epic v. Apple dispute.

app-store-blue-banner.jpg

"Epic is right," wrote Musk, before going on to call Apple's App Store fees a "de facto global tax on the Internet."

Musk earlier this week made veiled comments about App Store fees, but today's statement is a much more direct criticism.

During Tesla's earnings call, Musk said that Tesla was planning to let other companies use its charger network because Tesla does not want to "create a walled garden" and use that to "bludgeon" competitors. Musk said that this is a tactic used by "some companies," and then he fake coughed and said "Apple."

Epic Games launched a major dispute with Apple in August 2020, defying the App Store rules and getting popular game Fortnite removed from the App Store. After that, Epic Games launched a planned lawsuit to call out Apple's App Store fees and restrictions.

Apple and Epic Games went to trial earlier this year, and we're waiting to hear the outcome. Epic Games is aiming for alternate app store or app loading options, while Apple wants to maintain the status quo.

Musk has clashed with Apple over the years due to employee poaching issues, but this is the first time he's directly spoken out about Apple's App Store policies. Tesla does not have a paid app in the App Store and is not impacted by fees.

Musk also took to Twitter today to deny claims that he'd once asked to be the CEO of Apple. A new book says that Musk once called Cook about a potential Apple acquisition of Tesla. The book claims that Musk asked to be CEO of Apple, at which point Cook said "F-- you" and hung up the phone.

According to Musk, he has never spoken or written to Cook, and while there was one point where he requested a meeting with Cook about a potential acquisition, Cook refused to meet. Cook has also said that he has never spoken with Musk.

this clinches it for me that Cook told Musk to f**k off. Musk is obsessed like a grade schooler over Apple.

Never liked Musk - greatest conman of 21st century, Tesla cars are garbage as are all EVs, it’s simply an agenda to earn brownie/political points with Greenies and SJW latte sipping eco activists who don’t understand or refuse to understand the environmental long term damage EVs cause compared to ICE cars. Musk’s time will come soon enough and the world will see him for a fraud that he is. Trying to deflect attention from the scam he’s running by attacking Apple won’t change things in the long run.

Its a fee for services rendered not a tax.
Exactly. Developer here. I’m quite happy with what Apple’s 15% (I don’t earn millions…) gives me - legal, tax summaries (for all countries), a comprehensive back-end to app analytics, a secure App Store (preventing malicious apps which might compromise mine), iCloud server integration & data storage, payment system for customers, app review process as well as technical support.

It’s a fee for service… and we should stop listening to the multi-million dollar companies (and individuals) who think it’s a ripoff, while they pretend to care for the ‘little guy’. It’s that very thinking that’s put the USA in the terrible position it’s currently in (and other countries want to follow). The likes of Bezos, Musk, etc. are repulsive. Stick that Epic guy up there too.

Thank you... I wish more developers would chime in on these topics here.

Do you develop exclusively for iOS? Or do you develop for Android as well?

What would Apple (or Google) have to do to make you leave their platforms altogether?

I'm not a developer... but it seems like getting 85% of something is better than 0%

:)

I think a lot of people have missed an important point: Musk has this ability to make things "trending" just by talking about it. I think this will bring further scrutiny to Apple's practices by the general public.

If that's a good thing or not, idk.
