Unbanning Trump is huge. There is a huge difference between Trump with or without a Twitter account running in 2024. That could even decide the election. It likely did in 2016. That is the reason why Twitter banned Trump. They wanted to make he runs again in 2024. If a private company has so much power, that is a thread to democracy.

That seems impossible in today's society. Everyone has to go out of their way to verbalize and nitpick everything. People can't just be an adult and ignore the comment, nor can they take it with a grain or salt, nor can they understand someone's opinion that differs from theirs and respect it.

Call me old fashioned, but I don’t think holocaust denial is an “opinion” that deserves “respect”. Nor should it be ignored.

I think that Musk is one of the most intelligent and creative people in history. Of course his personality disorders sometimes get in the way, but things eventually get done. I have a twitter account that I rarely visit but I wish him well in his attempt to affect social media.

You can fix twitter with one change.... remove anonymity to accounts. Require verification that its a real person and make their real name visible.

People will still be clowns and hate mongers, but at least everyone will know who they really are so they'll have to finally deal with the consequences of saying hateful things.

Interesting statement considering all the things he said and how hard he tried NOT to buy them. Not sure why naive people are throwing roses at the feet of someone who was forced to do something.

When this makes people feel liberated to post racist stuff, it’s not a great start. Hard to feel positive about the future of the platform either.

If it follows the usual pattern of this stuff then it's probably 20% edgy bois saying it just because they can and 80% leftists trying to sabotage twitter now that they wont have the complete run of the place.

The demand is always higher than the supply. See Jussie Smollett, Bubba Wallace, and tons of leftist college students caught on camera painting the N word, swastikas etc. on campuses.

“Leftist”

I want to cry. Just stop it.

"That is why I bought Twitter. I didn't do it because it would be easy. I didn't do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love. And I do so with humility, recognizing that failure in pursuing this goal, despite our best efforts, is a very real possibility. "

It's true. When I think of Musk, I think of humility.

Don’t have to respect an opinion, just the right to have and voice one

Musk didn't buy it to protect your free speech. He bought it to protect his free speech.

Watch what happens.
No, he has a genuine commitment to the concept of the global 'town square' and it is conspiracy and paranoia to cynically and without foundation cast aspersions on Musk.

I don't think this is about allowing hate speech. It is clear that free speech does not automatically equate to hate speech or the encouragement of violence, as much as it is convenient for the Left to trumpet such an equation. The Left has to accept that many people, probably the majority, do not subscribe wholesale to Leftist ideology but that is not the same as saying they subscribe to something equivalent to the 'far right' as Leftists fear (or as Leftists lie about).

With people on the Left, it is easy to guess their opinions on almost every topic. However, it is difficult to know precisely what people on the Right think because it is a much broader church. Moderates probably also support Musk. It remains very curious to me how in the US, and increasingly in the UK, Leftists think that anyone not in alignment with their ideology must automatically be labelled 'far right' or some subtle equivalent.

Numerous studies also show that Leftists are far more likely to have a policy of avoiding any friendships with those who are right of centre or Right, yet those on the right are predominantly open to friendships with those on the left.

Not really sure WHAT I expected when I clicked to read the comments in this thread but....

WOW!

I don’t understand why so many people have such strong feelings about Twitter. I joined and quit a few years ago and none of my friends or family belong. Neither do My college aged kids. It just seems like a place for people to act out their worst instincts.
