Funny comments. Obviously, Musk is going to have to say something and like a lot of high-level thinking people and successful innovators, he has an ego. Not a bad thing... it's what made Steve Jobs the powerhouse he was.

Anyways... this is all good no matter what. Apple will bring innovation to this space and by Google, and Apple getting into this space, it's going to accelerate the innovations. Good for all.

I like both Apple and Tesla and I agree with Musk on this one. I'm surprised so many people are ruffled. I would also bet money that Tesla is going to be much more successful in automotive business than Apple 10 years from now.

Apple Watch hasn't been revolutionary and no watch company is going out of business because of it. I might be wrong but I believe that Apple Watch will die just like the iPod in a few years.

Try reading his words one more time.

As an Apple fan and Tesla admirer, I welcome his comments. Competition will be the best thing for us as consumers.

Not sure everyone would agree that Tesla is the most innovative company of the second century. Maybe that's what it will become but right now it's just selling expensive EVs to wealthy hipsters. I'd love to see Musk's reaction if Apple decided to partner with BMW.

Saying Tesla cars are just expensive EVs and omitting important factors like the amazing range, expanding network of super chargers, 3G with free roaming and OTA updates is like saying iPhone is just an expensive phone and ignoring its internet connectivity, App store and ecosystem.

Wow no fury like fanboys insulted. I'm a fanboy of Apple big time, but I think Elon is stop on, I think people are so pee'd because he hit a nerve. I honestly think he is totally right - have you seen the Apple Watch?! Seriously, it has the potential to chance medicine, to improve people's lives and help people live longer. Right now though, it's a piece of cr*p that's simply an extension on an iPhone screen with a heart sensor stuck on (which does nothing by the way - does it pardon the pun 'watch' your heart for arrhythmia? Does it tell you if a heart attack is imminent? Does it tell you anything about your heart? It does nothing!! It does one thing you can do with your finger - check your pulse) the Apple Watch is a disaster of a product, it's a blatant show of money grabbing Tim Cook pandering to millionaires who want to get richer. All the stories before the watch came out about it checking for heart problems, having blood pressure and oxygen saturation monitoring, hydration levels blah blah blah THAT STUFF, that is what could change the world that would change medicine not this rushed out insanely overpriced piece of garbage we have now. Elon you are officially my hero after that comment! Tim Cook needs to leave Apple, plan and simple! Maybe hire Elon? That would rock!

That apple watch that is selling really well. What a horrid analogy he made.

With that statement, he should be worried.

I think he was talking more about talent and true innovation, and he hit the nail right on the head. The stuff Tesla is doing is incredibly revolutionary, truly something that will change the world, and they are doing it completely against the grain having to fight against opposing laws, carmakers, politicians, etc. While Apple has.... made another larger iPad, lol. Once again this is besides sales, both companies need sales and need to make money obviously, but I don't think it was the focus of his comments.

Well it's not like it's rocket science... oh wait it is.[/]

Lol ya an electric car. Just like rocket science! The folks at JPL are rolling about now.

Yeah you sound less like a "fanboy" and more like someone who has an odd chip on their shoulder over the Apple Watch. Really. Apple Watch is classic Apple. Not sure where you got these ideas that it was somehow going to save the world. I can promise you that it most certainly has helped people even without all of the things you apparently believe it must have to be relevant. It wasn't marketed as the end-all of health monitors: it was/is marketed as a fitness device (among other things). It works really well in that use case. I know, I have one and bought it specifically for that purpose. Is it perfect? No. Will it get better? Yes. Just like with any of the other recent Apple 1.0 devices. They still did it better at 1.0 than anyone else has.

And you gave me a good laugh continuing with that silly thing about "you can track your heart rate with a finger". Well no ****. Theoretically in a hospital they could do the same thing but they put those silly clips on your finger instead because it's automatic. And how exactly would the Apple Watch do blood pressure monitoring? Anyone who claimed it would do that was smoking something *really* good.

Musk wouldn't be talking **** if he wasn't concerned about Apple's potential car. Makes me think he might know something that the rest of us don't about Apple's plans.

I don't get it. How did you turn the idea "Someone has something negative to say" into "Because this guy has negative comments, it means he has insider information about something he is very jealous about, that's coming down the line"?

I personally think his comments are very in touch with my own opinions about apple's last few product releases. You know that feeling you get when apple releases a minor update, that is generally just specs and hardly any new innovation? Like you know they're just doing it to "update" the product. That's the feeling I've gotten from pretty much all their products for the past several years.

The products which haven't given me that same feeling have been: the new apple tv (despite the negative opinion of some), 4k iMacs, and maybe the 12" Macbook (because the design is simply phenomenal).

He makes it seem like Apple is going to pull their iphone engineers and programmers and task them with making a car lol. He's absolutely right its a whole new ballgame than making electronics... But he's smart enough to know that a company with Apple's resources will have the best auto industry people working on this. His words definitely show that he's worried about having Apple enter his business. Even if the Apple car is not as good as a Tesla, Apple has a cult following of loyal consumers, many of which have a lot of disposable income, since Apple products are certainly not cheap.

Lol ya, just like rocket science. The folks at JPL are rolling about now.

Actually it is, look up the SpaceX program. Musk is a guy trying to push space travel and colonization of Mars. Odds are he is going to get to Mars before NASA anyway, so yeah the folks at JPL are probably indeed rolling around, in agony.

I don;t know why so many are getting bent out of shape, Musk was asked an inflammatory question and he answered honestly. Every other word that came out of Jobs mouth was inflammatory. Heck look at the stupid comment Cook made about refrigerators and toasters and see how Microsoft came back to bite him just a few days ago. What's the big deal?

He said it like a jerk, but he's right that electric cars are much more meaningful than iToys. Though Apple makes a lot more profit... infinite times as much profit.
I agree with everything you said, but Musk didn't start Tesla to make money. His entire business model is not a money making one, and he knew that. He started it to revolutionize the car industry (by adding a legitimate electric car to the line), and bring the future a little bit closer to us.

If you look at which is going to help humanity more:

1. Electric cars should eventually replace gasoline-powered cars, thus reducing energy usage and pollution. They are also more reliable, so if the high costs of electric vs gasoline are overcome by the industry (ICE cars have been refined and mass-produced over many years vs electric), they should cost less in the end. Lastly, they're safer, again because they're more reliable. I'm only worried about ICE cars dying off because they're way more fun. Same with self-driving cars; I acknowledge that they're better, but there is definitely culture to be lost.

2. Smartphones are useful for communication... which dumbphones could already do. They don't really replace what a PC can do for creation. They just make apps of all sorts more accessible to people. I would argue that they cause more harm than good in the end since so many adults and most of the kids get addicted to using them for silly purposes, and people use them while driving. I often wish they never existed as I get stuck behind some idiot stopped at a green light or see my friend glued to an iPhone screen instead of talking to me. And all Apple does is improve the user experience of smartphones over the years. An iPhone 4 or some crap Samsung phone from 2010 would have been good enough for all utility purposes, and the new "health" features are all bogus. Meanwhile, Tesla tries to improve car technology, which actually means something in real life.

Point 1: Some really big assumptions there especially about electric cars replacing gasoline-powered cars. Maybe someday. Maybe not. It certainly isn't going to happen in your lifetime. And really...they're safer because they're more reliable? The quantum leap in safety will be if self-driving cars replace manually driven cars. Has nothing to do with the reliability of electric.

Point 2: You write like someone who has a chip on their shoulder about mobile devices. I always love when people make the claim that something old should have been good enough. Yeah and 640k was enough too.

I can also assure you that for many the health impact of these new devices is quite real and tangible, much more than your assumed future where electric cars replace all regular cars and the world is somehow safer.

This would have more of a bite if Tesla actually made a profit. But when Apple makes huge profits and Tesla makes none and only exists because of government subsidies and zero interest rates, it's hard to take the comment seriously. (Note: I am not saying profits are all that matters.)

It's precious how people here are calling Musk classless for these comments yet Steve Jobs himself carried the exact same tone for his entire life.

And who here didn't think that Steve Jobs was also classless ? Steve Jobs was admired for what he did at Apple and not necessarily for the person he was.

Apple has no pedigree for automotive innovation. The fact of the matter is, car enthusiasts are a bit different than the Apple ones.

Oh man come on. They didn't have a pedigree for mobile innovation either. Nor for the personal computer or tablet. They seemed to have succeeded in all of those areas regardless of pedigree. They have more money than God and can hire whomever they want and give them however much money they need to succeed in that area.

That apple watch that is selling really well. What a horrid analogy he made.

With that statement, he should be worried.

It really was a bad analogy. Sure, he might not like the style but the Apple Watch is the best designed smart watch and one of the better designed watches in general (meaning the amount of careful effort put into the design). With the Apple Watch, Apple jumped into first place for sales of smart watches. Yes, it was a new field so it's not comparable to cars but what Apple did with the Apple Watch is very similar to what Tesla did with cars - jump in and make the best one. The Apple Watch is not for everyone but neither are Teslas vehicles (I'd buy one if I had the money).

What Apple could or might be able to do with a car won't worry Tesla - there's a lot of room for multiple companies - but it's something Tesla needs to watch closely.

It is obvious Musk would be concerned about Apple becoming Tesla's competitor. If Apple starts making vacuum cleaners James Dyson would be concerned too.

Whenever a company with the size of Apple enters the market, it is not something you can scoff at.

With that said, Elon Musk is not like Ballmer. He is a visionary with amazing drive. It would be an uphill battle for Apple to go against Tesla.

His drive hasn't translated into profits.
