Musk subsequently told users they can block any user they want by simply deleting their Twitter account.

I don't think you understood what you highlighted.

"the ability to block abusive users from the service"

that's not the same as blocking a user from interacting with you. 🤦‍♂️
Google’s seems pretty unequivocal that users are able to block each other, though.

You do know that most people have multiple accounts where they can switch and see your content after being blocked, right?
If someone wants to go to that trouble, sure, and I can block those too. My main goal in blocking someone isn’t so much that they’re not able to see my content — my main profile is public so all it takes is switching to a private browsing window, not even a second account — but that they’re not able to interact with it. I block, mute, or both depending on the account.

I’m no celebrity, so I’m not worried about people profiting off the back of my content (which is how Blue payouts work and why a good chunk of the content in the “for you” tab is now obvious engagement bait from “verified” users), but rather as a person I’d rather someone who dislikes me simply not be able to spew garbage in my replies unchecked.

I mean the accounts are practically unlimited.

Also neat trick: set account to private, post a nasty reply, and unprivate the account. That way the user like you never sees it in notifications but it is listed under as a reply. So unless someone else interacts with it and unless you're checking your content daily, you won't know it happened.

And *even* then, someone can still link to your content as a quote post and people who follow that account will click on the post and start writing nasty things at you.

Blocking only encourages trolls to work extra hard into making it an unpleasant experience for the person they're attacking. Muting doesn't let them know you're not reading and it wastes their precious seconds on earth writing things you won't ever see. Possibly a win win situation as you dont see their content and they think you saw their content.

not unequivocal but closer.

one can argue blocking from seeing particular user generated content which a mute can achieve.
Google specifies that users must be able to block UGC and users though. Muting and blocking have existed on social media platforms long enough that if Google viewed muting as sufficient to “block” a user, they presumably would have said so.

Use other social media site and I'm blocking the founder. Option is needed.
Have phone numbers blocked on my phone app. o_O Crazy if you couldn't.

Muting for me is largely for the purpose of keeping up appearances where I need to continue to follow someone I don’t like for the sake of not starting drama among mutual friends or at work. That’s fine, doesn’t mean I need to deal with seeing their content.

Blocking is “I want absolutely nothing to do with you” or in a select few cases “I need absolutely nothing to do with you.” The latter case is as in, there’s someone against whom I have a permanent restraining order. That kind of thing.

Why buy a company just to destroy it?
Verizon has completely ruined Yahoo Finance with their ludicrous censoring of simple comments
Every food company that bought another destroyed it, such as Dreyers ruining Haagen Daz
It doesn't even say tweet anymore, just Post. Good lord

Stupid name change. Bad rollout. A new name plastered all over the classic design. Knee-jerk reaction changes to rules and policy. Increased threats and hate-speech.

It’s a plaything for a billionaire, and it shows. Any merit-based arguments he has about his vision for Twitter - or X - are not going to be taken seriously with the way the platform is being managed.

I’ll give Musk credit if he can turn it around, regardless of whether it’s luck or skill. But if this is part of some brilliant strategy, I guess I can see why he’s a genius and I’m a rube, because it appears to me just someone with a lot of money buying a company because he can, and doing whatever he feels like with it. Which is fine, but I’m not seeing the business strategy or vision here.

A few months ago I started to receive push notifications for tweets from Musk’s account. While I didn’t even follow him. So I blocked his account…

No longer. Guess the next stop is to delete my accounts.

So when someone claims their mental health was impacted by all the hate people send then Elon will be responsible for the legal risk. Clearly no one is using that other product threads.

I deactivated my account last month. It’s becoming obvious to me that he is hell bent on killing off the platform one moronic decision at a time.

Same. I deleted my account the day after Threads launched. I had lost all interest in Twitter by that point but every decision Musk makes seems geared toward turning Twitter into a new version of 4Chan. My only use for it by that point was staying on top of breaking news but it wasn't worth wading through the cesspool of right-wing neaderthals.
