Every time Elon does some stupid **** like this, people swear they’re deleting Twitter but they don’t. The only way Twitter will fail is if people stop using it. If you’re really going to delete your account, do it. Don’t just talk about it. Simple as that.

No it's not. To prevent someone from stalking you, get off public social media. Unless only your friends can follow you (whattsapp) block does not deter stalking.
Right. And a restraining order does not deter stalking either, since friends can follow you around. Might as well end those too and let the victims of the harassment simply pack up and move to the other side of the country if they really want to avoid it.

Just stop while you’re behind. What you’re saying is ridiculous. It isn’t thought through. It’s asinine. You’re letting perfection get in the way of good.

Block will be reintroduced as a paid feature o_O

I bet his friends and accolades will always have the block feature.

Ok so the first 5 comments are hating on block remove.

He said - the feature makes no sense, and indeed, it doesn't so let's analyze:

A - I don't see their content anymore - same as mute. Mute already does that, check.

B - They can't see my content anymore - except if they log out or open a private browsing window, meaning, yes everyone can still see my content if it is a public feed.

C - If I have a private feed - they can't see my content anyway.

So yeah, block is redundant and actually makes no sense at all.

I think Elon wants to remove it because of B - people who block other people may believe that these others then can't see their account anymore and may not realize that the public at large including any blocked person who just logged out or uses a private browser window can still see their feed. So it's misleading.

So Musk wants to do that so people are not misled?

You forgot that if they are muted and not blocked, they can comment on your feed all day long and you can't see it. They can say whatever they want about your tweets and harass and bully you on your feed. All your followers would be able to see whatever nonsense they want spew, and you wouldn't even know. So, it's not the same. It's not redundant, it's an important tool to keep people from harassing and bullying.

Just gets dumber...and dumber...and dumber. What a crock.
Nooo. Musk is right.

Mute and block are almost identical. They only need one of them. I could never figure out which one to use.

Also like and retweet. Both show up on my feed to others. Why select one or the other? And when should I do both?

The only interface weirder than Twitter is Snapchat. That one’s truly bizarre.

Then keep block and drop mute. You don’t really need both.

This is not true. They are very different. Blocking is like getting a restraining order against a stalker. Muting is like getting ear plugs so you can't hear their footsteps.

Why get rid of either? They both have a function. Maybe you want to not hear everything someone spews on their feed, but you still think they can contribute to the conversation. Musk is just upset that people are blanket blocking blue check marks and annoying advertisements.

A few months ago I started to receive push notifications for tweets from Musk’s account. While I didn’t even follow him. So I blocked his account…

No longer. Guess the next stop is to delete my accounts.
Same here. I have never followed or interacted with his account, but suddenly one day Twitter was pushing his account at me as "suggested," and it continued. Either he told his team to boost his account, or his team took it upon themselves to do it as a way to kiss his butt. Either way, it's the same result. He was all over my feed and I didn't want to see his tweets, so I blocked him.

I just checked, and once again he wasn't blocked. 🤬

I know there are some people who have serious issues with stalkers and privacy, and they need to have tools to prevent certain people from following them on social media (making their profile private, blocking, etc.). I only use the block ability to prevent bots and spammers from interacting with me, so the issue is restricted to the platform itself, and not my safety. But it still is a feature that people need to have, in order to be in control of their experiences online.

Musk's latest move is about him wanting to make the platform more profitable by expanding bot and spammer content, and to make sure we have fewer tools to moderate the spread of disinformation on the platform, which he seems to delight in.

if he does this - I will... I'm done.

It's a bit more complicated than that.

Mute is the equivalent of pretending not to notice when a loan shark comes to your house and sprays threatening message on your front wall. Just because you choose not to see it doesn't mean the hurtful messages aren't there, or that they don't do any harm.
No need for analogies. I'm well aware of how blocking and muting works.

For example, a muted account can still dox me by say, giving out my home address to other haters in your replies who have expressed an interest in murdering me and my family. They can still see what I post, and respond accordingly.

It's not so simple as "out of sight, out of mind".

Blocking an account means the person can switch to a different account and still dox you. If I was a troll and I found I was blocked, I'd just switch accounts and say "hey, it's me again" and proceed to harrass.

Also, did you know that if that person doxxed you in the replies and then blocks you, you cannot hide their reply in the comments or report the particular post to get it removed?

Blocking doesn't solve anything and only makes things worse.

Absolutely has to be out of sight, out of mind. There's no way around it.

You're simply ignoring the things that blocking does solve because there are things that it doesn't. There is absolutely a need for better blocking tools in social media. Removing the block function doesn't fix that.
