So, my girlfriend is a civil engineer for the federal government. Do you think they would look kindly if she just said she was an engineer, despite having never went to school for it? He's not an engineer.

This is all off-topic anyway. He can do what he wants with Twitter; I don't use it, I know no one that does, and I don't care if he burns it to the ground. The Internet would be better off without Twitter.

are you saying nikola tesla is not an engineer?

my friend never went to college, yet earns 6 figures at Google as a software engineer. he's absolutely an engineer. going to college isn't the only way to be an engineer.

you were the one arguing that he's not an engineer.

He can give himself the title of Chief Engineer at his company without having a degree in engineering if he wants, its the perks of being in charge of the company.

You're confusing Musk with a Kardashian.
Only gotta look at his wikipedia to see he was one of the innovators in the early years of the internet. Co-created one website Compaq brought for $300 million then co-created PayPal & sold, that to eBay for $1.5 Billion. That's literally NOT nothing. Yeah didn't found Tesla, just used his own money to keep the company alive since 2004 before it became profitable (from a stock perspective) in only the last few years. Geez not even Warren Buffet would've stuck with a low performing investment that long. Again NOT nothing. As for something he did found, SpaceX. The Space Shuttle cost over $50,000/kg to launch into space. The SpaceX Falcon Heavy cost $1500/kg & the future Starship rocket will be $200/kg. Does that sound like "nothing" to you?

Let's get it right here... he didn't do anything really. He bankrolled the huge swathes of people who did that. It's disingenuous and dishonourable to associate anything past the financials to him.

The space shuttle was a "moonshot" project designed to get wheeled out and shown off which is why it was expensive. That was until a couple of them blew up which was bad PR. The real work was being done by other launch vehicles which were far more economical.

$200/kg is another classic Musk over-promise. Starship hasn't flown for over a year now. There are some serious problems there.

No, I'm saying Elon musk is not. Not in education and not in practice. He claims to be an engineer, yet doesn't do any engineering.

Look at Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla never had a degree in engineering. Yet, it's universally agreed by well respected engineers around the world that Nikola Tesla is an engineer.

Just attending an engineering school for a bit doesn't automatically make you an engineer. I don't know what your point is.

I personally know someone who never went to college, yet is making six figures as a software engineer at Google. Is he not a software engineer?
As an actual qualified engineer (MSc Microelectronics) who now works in the software industry I would suggest at this point that calling anyone in the software market an engineer is a complete joke. It's a fashion show cargo cult, not a discipline which should be adhered to. In maturity terms we are still in the pre-victorian industrial era with exploding steam engines crashing through stations onto the street, people jumping off the Eiffel Tower with a blanket attached to them and giant airships turning into fireballs. There is a very long way to go before it could be considered anywhere near engineering.

This denigrates some of the academics from the Bell Labs, Berkeley and theoretical computer science side of things so I would like to entirely exclude them from this comment.

This is false, goes along well with the consistent lie about billionaires not paying taxes.
The guy commits SEC violations, comes to an agreement with them, and ignores those agreements. What other explanation is there than billionaires are subject to a different set of laws then us regular people?

Notably with SEC investigations, they usually let people get away with a promise because it's a lot more rope to hang them with next time.

Insider trading and market manipulation are so so so so so easy for them to tear a new ****** in someone with.

You can quickly see who enjoys echo chambers. They put a disagree on anything against the narrative and ignore any facts presented to them just to spew some more childish nonsense. Those are the people against Elon owning Twitter, they don't want to lose Echo Chamber #4000 on the internet.

I'm quite happy with him owning twitter. It's a craphole and completely pointless investment which will be dead in a few years or replaced with some other social media platform.

But I'm not happy with market manipulation.

'Literally' can be used to mean 'figuratively'. So yes, the definition has expanded and you've taken the post at literal face value and missed the point.
Just to be clear - the definition has expanded because you’ve decided it has, right? Because before the definition was expanded literally and figuratively were antonyms. Or the joke went over my head. Wouldn’t be surprised.

Same idea though. Those same "outraged" celebs and also non-celebs are saying they will quit twitter.

It's a little easier to quit twitter than movie countries. In addition, the US and Canada matter; Twitter doesn't. If it makes you feel any better, I quit the day he originally said he was going to buy it...granted I hadn't logged in for a couple years.

If it disappeared tomorrow, everyone would be just fine.
