I could buy ten iPhone Xs and I would not even notice it on my bank account. I just HATE THE NOTCH.
[doublepost=1510718496][/doublepost]

So imagine the notch being on the side of the phone and someone makes the same case that is it just a reduced bezel - stupid argument. Screens have had 90 degree angles forever for a reason - because they look and work best that way. This is just apologism for Apple's crappy design by fanboys. Mind you, I am huge fan of Apple as well, but I hate the notch.
The notch area is there regardless, there are 8 sensors/transducers there. Apple had two choices: extend the bezel all the way across the top—even at the edges where there are no sensors—or add extra display area where they could, on the left and right.

They had to make a decision, they prototyped both, and went with the ears. Hate it all you want, but that’s the way it is and it’s not going change for the foreseeable future.

It's not(ch) what it looks like. And if you squint you can't even see it. And if there's a black background it's even better. Honestly the petty things people moan about.

"Ooh. Look. It's got a notch. It's not bezelless. There's no headphone jack. It's got that lightning connector/dongle arrangement thing. It's ugly. The design is two years old. It costs 30% more than its nearest competitor".

Yeah, yeah. So what. You'll probably be saying the once-intuitive OS has become an unnecessarily overcomplicated mess as well - which it most certainly isn't of course. So let's all just embrace whatever is there and get on with it. Surely.

And for any other moaning minnies out there Apple will get all these 'issues' sorted in the next two iterations definitely. Beat that!

However, Apple makes more phones than just the X and they also work straight out of the box and have zero issues.

They do indeed. And I have had all versions of them. Except from the 7 and 8 for which I though Apple was getting a bit too lazy on the design segment. I bough X for various reasons, screen to body ratio being one (like large screen but on a smaller body factor) also the OLED display (which is one of the reasons I went for Galaxy S8 on April) So none of these are on the previous models.
Obviously I don't appreciate the price being high but my initial impression of this device have been great so no regrets there.

I can't f***** stand it. It's hideous and it's the reason I'm switching to Samsung after 8 years of being a loyal iPhone customer. I don't want a notch eating into whatever I'm watching or doing, and I don't want to try and hide it. Honestly I'm fed up, calling the iPhone 8 "a brand new design" and even calling it the iPhone 8 is laughable, and the iPhone X which I had high hopes for has that stupid notch but MOST IMPORTANTLY it's the same width as an iPhone 7/8 so ....

Maybe you should buy the 8 after all. German consumer reports just called the X the most fragile phone ever tested (3 out of 3 didn't pass their break-test, while with previous iphones, all passed). They also criticized bad battery life and bad reception compared to the 8 (but liked the camera, faceID and display).

Makes me wonder how do they do these tests. Sure thing, I have not dropped the phone (and I hope I won't) so I can't tell how fragile it is but it is a glass I suspect it does break if you drop it. The battery have been nothing short of amazing for me, left with 30% before bed time at 11pm (ny Galaxy S8 would have probably been more or less about the same) and zero issues with reception (but that may depend on network operators as well)

I will never ever own this phone, so I ultimately don't care, however I do think it's a poor design choice by Apple. I'm very anal / borderline OCD, so every time I see particularly moving images of the notch, my brain just hurts due to the uneven nature of the screen.

For me, the most controversial design decision is the removal of Touch ID.

We see how Face ID is problematic in many cases. Touch ID has none of those issues. I want an iPhone X with both Face ID and Touch ID.

But actually as a citizen of a country where gloves is a must a lot of the spring, fall and winter - FaceID would solve those times - I also play golf and can't unlock my phone with my hand in a golfing glove - Again would be possible with FaceID - so both have positives and negatives - best case scenario would be to have both as an option.

Jony Ive Quote
"Our goal is to try to bring a calm and simplicity to what are incredibly complex problems (lots of sensors above the screen) so that you're not aware really of the solution (there is now a big friggin' notch at the top)."

The notch is a non-issue if you actually own the phone and apparently a huge issue for those who don’t or the media that needs to generate clicks.
Totally agree! I don't actually own an iPhone X, but I think that the only situation that might bother me is when watching videos full screen... but then again I hardly ever watch videos on my iPhone, so I don't think it would be an issue for me. The only problem, would be the price!

A wise Master once told me in a dream….. use the Notch….

Well if it's iconic and great design, would you like to see it on iPads ?

It's awful UX design , that screams of a compromise to hit a milestone deadline .

If only landscape mode did not exist....

Watch apple gloat and be proud of themselves how they managed to integrate the housing into future screens . Notch will be gone , for a UX company, its frankly embarrassing.

It will be on the ipads yes.

I don’t mind the notch at all, although, last night as I layed in bed with my 5 year old showing him a video, he asked me how I broke my phone, and pointed to the “notch”.

This made me smile. A kid was able to have one look at a design and say the phone is broken and yet most adults are ok with the notch. Some are even ecstatic.

as long as I don't watch video it's fine. It's the rest of the phone and iOS11 I hate.

There's a rumor that Apple is perfecting an anti-gravity app that warns the user with a pop-up when the device is in free fall...

I don't think those are the only considerations for designers. An app designer doesn't have a vested interest in making the phone seem more bezelless; that's a goal for the hardware designers. An app designer might, however, want to embrace the ears to make their canvas seem larger than the competition's, even if there's nothing meaningful on that extended canvas. It's little different than an interior decorator choosing colors and arranging furniture to make a small room seem larger.

Along similar lines, it's like an architect deciding how deeply-set a room's windows are - should they be flush with the inside wall, or be closer to the outside wall? This has no impact on the room's floor space, but a deep sill can accommodate potted plants that might otherwise be placed on tables that do clutter the interior space. Even sans foliage, the window panes, rather than surrounding walls, become the perceived boundary, generating the illusion of greater space. Conversely, a window wall or shallow-set windows add to the illusion of proximity to the outdoors.

I love this explanation and how well you've explained it. This is my view on how it actually comes across too - it isn't 'usable' space but gives the impression of more space.

The notch is there because it's necessary due to the the current limitations of technology. The ONLY alternative we have today is a bezel. That's it.

Will they remove it in future? Of course, when we can integrate the tech under the display.

Is that possible right now? No, it is not.

It's either a notch or bezel. Those are your only two choices as of today.

Will Apple gloat when they can give us a device without a notch or bezel? Of course, and rightfully so.

But as of today, that is not possible. The choice is a notch or a bezel, and Apple have both types on sale, so I don't see what the issue is.

BTW the percentage isn’t totally gone (you’ll notice in your battery settings you can no longer say that you want to see the percentage) but rather, it’s a bit hidden in the control panel. Slide down and view your percentage. Yes, it’s not on your screen the whole time, but it’s not exactly gone.
