But actually as a citizen of a country where gloves is a must a lot of the spring, fall and winter - FaceID would solve those times - I also play golf and can't unlock my phone with my hand in a golfing glove - Again would be possible with FaceID - so both have positives and negatives - best case scenario would be to have both as an option.

Don’t you still have to touch the screen to unlock?

Can we PLEASE be totally honest here.

There are those who hate the notch and can't imagine having a screen with this design.

And

There are those who put up with / ignore the notch due to the benefits that come from this design.
eg. You can see it as a bit of extra space either side, or it's worth it for face ID, or it's worth is for no home button.

But PLEASE let's be 100% honest here, people only are accepting the notch because of the compromise in order for other benefits in their eyes.

No one WANTS the notch to be there for visual reasons, and if you say you do, sorry, I don't believe you.

If you genuinely like/want the notch, then you would accept that dead area on the screen if there was nothing there.
If you took an iPhone 8+ and killed off the same area of the screen, so it had a notch which did nothing, then you would have to admit, you would still like it there on THAT screen.

So please be honest. It's just something that some/many are prepared to "Put Up With" and choose to ignore/get use to, due to other benefits such a design brings.

Like for example the battery life in iPhone. You would rather is lasted a month, than a day (or two) who wouldn't!
But you accept the compromise that to get the phone thin and light, you accept the limitation of a short battery life.

Apple had currently no other practical way of doing this.
So rather like a very fat person, trying to pretend they are thin, and squeezing into a thin dress, you go the other way, embrace the "Issue?" and try and market it, as a positive rather than the negative we all really know it is, deep down.

Put is this way....... Imagine 2 iPhoneX's for sale.

One with the notch
One with all the sensors and the camera that (somehow) worked from behind/thru the screen.

Or course people would all wish to have the latter version and have a full screen with no cut-out.
But we accept the limitation for the time being.

I suspect as years go on. Not right away, perhaps in another 3 - 5 years, Apple with narrow the notch down, as tech will allow them to get all the current items held within that area down to a smaller size, or various items combined as opposed to separate sensors/cameras and we'll see the notch shrink.

That won't happen for a while, but I'd say the notch will, in years to come, when they are ready, be shrunk down to impose less into the screen.

I had no intention of purchasing the X because of the notch. The 8+ was purchased instead.
I stumbled upon an X and did an in store pick up.
After picking up and playing with the demo in the store I was sold.

The notch, it's there. I groan a little bit when in landscape but the groaning is becoming less frequent.

Apple has the knack of molding us into using their designs and adapting to them.
An example, the elimination of the headphone jack - sure tons of griping however, I can't imagine using a wired set of headphones ever again.

I am kicking myself for purchasing the 8+. I absolutely love the X and the accept the notch

Obviously not all people are buying it to show off, but some people are. Comments on this very forum show that. Apple even wants to make it easier for people to do so, as evidenced by the transparent and laughable decision of an X exclusive ringtone. Btw, I and many others buy Apple products for the very reasons you stated. However, Apple makes more phones than just the X and they also work straight out of the box and have zero issues.

Hahaha. What are you talking about

The 'notch' is so overblown it's ridiculous. Imagine if the notch went all the way across the top, it would be a bezel. Think of the notch like a full bezel with more room. Jeez, this is the dumbest discussion so far about any iphone.

People are always desperate to criticise Apple, though. It's fine when Apple has done something wrong, but it's like the default setting for most people.

Face ID is the perfect example.

Some people feel Face ID is flawed. Not because of the false positives we've seen in the last week or so, but because you have to look at your phone to unlock it. I've read comments from people who are apparently in situations all the time where they must have quick access to their iPhones, but where it's impossible to look at the phone.

If you're worried about Face ID from a security perspective, then fair enough. Wait and see. But people are dismissing the use case of "look at your phone and it unlocks" as cumbersome / awkward / inconvenient... because it's Apple.

The notch is a non-issue if you actually own the phone and apparently a huge issue for those who don’t or the media that needs to generate clicks.

I own the phone. I hate the notch.

I played with it in an Apple Store. In portrait mode it’s mostly ok, but really bothers me in landscape, it’s very visible, and unacceptable while viewing videos in full screen. I’ll be upgrading my iphone 6 to a 7 or 8, and watch what Apple will do with this strange design next year.

For me, the most controversial design decision is the removal of Touch ID.

We see how Face ID is problematic in many cases. Touch ID has none of those issues. I want an iPhone X with both Face ID and Touch ID.

No, we don't see how FaceID is problematic. We see a bunch of people trying to prove it is, and absolutely nothing concrete yet.

Yes, but you can use capacitive touch gloves without having to take them off to scan your finger.

Reminds me of the headphone jack thing. So many bizarre situations (with solutions I might add, solutions that were subsequently ignored..) where the change was personally detrimental to the poster.

"But how am I going to charge the phone when I'm listening to classical music on the 8th night of the month when the North Star is 29.9857237 degrees to the horizon and I have gloves AND a helmet on and I flip a coin and it lands on it's side whilst dancing the fandango during a lunar eclipse??"

BTW the percentage isn’t totally gone (you’ll notice in your battery settings you can no longer say that you want to see the percentage) but rather, it’s a bit hidden in the control panel. Slide down and view your percentage. Yes, it’s not on your screen the whole time, but it’s not exactly gone.
it's in the battery % widget as well

They could also just show the percentage instead of a vague icon that can't possibly ever explain the difference between 82% and 81% as succinctly as simply actually saying the percentage. I gather the are some users who must not need it, but I basically always want to know specifically where my battery is.

Actually isn't that old battery icon a clear example of skeuomorphism that modern Apple hate so much? I know for a fact my phone doesn't contain double-A Duracell's...

Had the phone since day one. Never been the slightest bit concerned by the notch.

When they overhauled the look of iOS, the only skeuomorphism they threw out was patterns, designs, backgrounds and buttons. While the battery icon is technically skeuomorphic, it's not the same kind of skeu... (I'm not attempting to spell it again lol)

Due to the fact we are even talking about a Notch... means its an issue.
No threads about the OLED screen.. I have a X. Personally, i think its a design flaw.

Seems im the only one.

After seeing my psych for 2 weeks, now I am convinced Joni created the 9th World Wonder - the Icon of (Un)obtrusiveness.
I find myself cutting out taped notches for my TV, iPad, Photo Books, kitchen windows etc.

How many indications s necessary for the same thing. My car has a miles til empty and the gas gauge.
Which one do I believe more.
iPhone has a battery indicator. If a charger is available I charge it.
If there isn’t a charger available the % or battery meter isn’t going to matter.
I truly don’t see why the % is a big thing. Sure preference, I understand.

If it’s red it’s gonna be dead.

I’m not bothered by the notch. I seem to do well adapting to notch. I just need a plus size.
Same. I didn’t just adapt, I actually love it. I hope they keep it. I like the blank space more than a huge, boring status bar. Just enough space to display what needs displayed. I dig it.
