I think people are calling it the wrong thing. There is no notch. There are two ears which are used to get the status bar out of the way of the display. I love it, it makes apps feel much more immersive.

The problem is that the notched area is not treated as a separate display that is reserved for status bar. Instead, iOS treats everything as a single canvas so it is possible for content to be occluded.

I keep seeing everyone say they get used to the notch, or it’s not that bad. But I don’t see anyone saying they LOVE the notch.
hmm.
are we reading the same thread?

that said.. lots of people simply don't use words like love or hate when talking about this type of stuff.. they'll say like or dislike instead.. or some other pos/neg which doesn't go extreme on the emotional scale.

(or, at least me.. like- i would probably never use Android.. but i wouldn't say "i HATE Android !!1!")

Can understand the complaints, but it’s simply not an issue to me. Control center and multi-tasking took some time to get used to. Really tired of Apple removing features (3D Touch app switcher on X doesn’t work), but overall I’m fine. Status bar could use some innovation, have to use control center to see info that used to be readily available. Maybe some new icon indicators would solve that.

I don't love it, I don't hate it and since video is in a 16:9 ratio watching things full screen on the phone cut out content from the top and bottom of the video so I'm usually going to have bars with no notch watching videos anyway. I more would have liked the screen built with a 16:9 ratio and make it less long but I guess the extra screen is useful in some situations and apps?

For me, the most controversial design decision is the removal of Touch ID.

We see how Face ID is problematic in many cases. Touch ID has none of those issues. I want an iPhone X with both Face ID and Touch ID.
I'm assuming future software updates will fix most of the face id problems? It's better to wait for the successor model, after brand new tech has been introduced, until they iron out the kinks. That's why I went with the 8 model.

Having zero issues with The Notch or using Face ID here on my X. I forget to think about either one. What am I doing wrong?

I disagree that Touch ID has no issues. My girlfriend can’t even use Touch ID on 3 different phones as it doesn’t recognize her fingerprint after she registers it.

Does not bother me in any way, shape, or form...OTHER than videos. Watching in full screen with notch is kind of bothersome, but when the video fills up screen right to the start of the notch..the screen looks amazing.

Ex: Captain America Civil War on Netflix. It looks phenomenal on the iPhone X.

My experience with Touch ID was not great. I had to retrain my fingerprints every so many months. My experience with Face ID has been flawless since 11/3 when my X arrived and I started using it. I now grimace when I have to use Touch ID on my iPad Pro.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that my screen protector is shaped wrong (the curves at the notch are steeped than on the phone and have sharp corners) and it makes it look weird. But that’s not the phone’s fault, it’s the poorly designed screen protectors.

Let’s not pretend that Touch ID has no issues. It clearly doesn’t work if your fingers are wet. It doesn’t work at ALL if you’ve been working hard and your hands are abraded — and needs to be retrained daily for weeks afterwards.

And it can completely not work for older people. So, no I don’t think Touch ID is better than Face ID.

But back to the Notch:

Couldn’t it conceivably just be all black background with the status icons in the foreground?

I don’t have an X yet, but for me, the loss of the VPN status icon will be very annoying.

The notch is a non-issue if you actually own the phone and apparently a huge issue for those who don’t or the media that needs to generate clicks.

Well... almost true. I am bothered by it but not nearly as much as the non-owners are, clearly since I do own one.

When I’m at home I use my Pixel 2 XL for videos and things like that to avoid the notch.

The comments on this thread make it easy to identify what people from Macrumors I would enjoy hanging out with.

I don’t even notice the notch. I guess your brain just adjusts.

Hate the notch (and faceid)

Waiting for the iPhone X2 (or 3) where Tim will announce it has more then 15% usable screen size and the notch is gone

It doesn’t bother me one bit. It was either one large top bezel, or extend the screen up into the corners. I’ll take the extra screen space for the status bar icons any day.

So I guess I love the notch. Sue me.

Having both would seem a bit redundant. I like the simplicity of touch ID but unless they can build into the screen I'll take face ID over it.
