This is false. Google Sync will only work on existing devices. If you get a new device or a new account, then you're SOL.

At the time that I wrote that post, it hadn't been confirmed either way - and reading the documentation regarding the change, it specifically mentioned 'new users' not 'new devices', so to outrightly claim it as false when obviously the playing field has changed since I posted is a little unfair - you probably should have opened the post with 'this is no longer true' rather than 'this is false'.

starting on January 30th, you won’t be able to sign up for a new Google Sync account. Existing accounts will trudge through unaffected, and Google Sync will also still be available for Google Apps for Business, Government and Education.

The reason why your device works after restore is because it still has the same device ID.

I know...

I have been using Google and exchange server..love how it syncs email, contacts, and calendar. I'm definitely going to have to look into using their email app (although I hate how long it takes to load/open) and need to figure out how to still sync contacts and calendar. It would be nice to have the additional battery life from dropping exchange.

I got my iPhone 5 in December so I'm in the clear with my "free" Google Apps accounts...for now.

For those getting new devices and wishing to jailbreak, I'm hoping someone will write a jailbreak tweak that will open the stock Mail app from a Gmail app notification.

There's another service that has been cut off with all these Gmail changes. In Snow Leopard, you can no longer set up Address Book to sync contacts with a free Gmail or Google Apps account.

Use cardDav to sync contacts...works like a charm

Do you know if in order to use card dav do you need to have a business google account or a free one would do.

Need more than a charm to get it to work in Snow Leopard. It doesn't.

If all a person needs is contact syncing between multiple Snow Leopard Macs or a SL Mac and iOS, they can still do it via a Yahoo! account. You don't have to have any of the other services (Mail, Calendar etc) switched on with your iOS device.

CardDav sync works fine with free gmail accounts for Mac OS 10.7 or higher, I believe.

I don't know if anyone has some this, but I restored my phone as new and was able to keep my sync calendar and contacts. Push email is still working.

Was this on the same device? It didn't work for me when I went from an iPhone 4 to 5 this past weekend.

It worked fine when I did a restore on my iPad but I didn't upgrade or switch devices.

I farked up and updated to 6.1.2 and of course push on the native mail app died.

I tried the gmail app, its just OK, but I much rather have the native mail app. I have other email addresses and Its a big hassle not having them all combined in one app.

From my understanding the only way to get it back is to buy google apps for business, which is $50/year (or $5/month)

Is that really the only option??

What? If you're on the same device a software update won't affect your eligibility regarding active sync support on GApps...

I'm with you on labels but not the other things.

Speed: Why Gmail app cannot load new messages in the background (like the default app does)? It knows that there are new messages, but loads them only a moment after you switch to the app. And sometimes, I actually have to refresh manually to see new messages.

Smoothness: I don't understand why it shows only 10 messages. If I scroll down too fast, I have to wait for it to refresh to show the next batch.

Lastly, I don't like that swiping by archives messages instead of deleting them: I delete way more often than archive.

Still, I have switched to Gmail app after Google killed Google sync for push and labels.

I switched to the gmail app. OMG! Very user-friendly compared to the crappy Apple-default mail app.

Love:

The notifications on Lockscreen
How I can "label"
Love priority inbox
Love the speed
Love how smooth it feels compared to default mail app.

Mainly it's because the Gmail app doesn't have offline mode. Apple's Mail app on the phone simply stores most of the stuff on the phone, thus giving you quick access to messages and ability to scroll through a lot of them (depending on how you set up the account).

Also, as far as I know only Apple apps can multitask, which would allow it to download new messages in background. Do any 3rd party apps download new email in the background?

I was not aware of that. So I can't use the Gmail app in the Airplane mode to browse all my emails! It looks like the Gmail app is still pretty far from completely replacing Apple's Mail app.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I just forward my gmail emails to my iCloud account to get push (gmail auto archives its copy). My gmail is sync normally to my iPhone so I can still send outgoing messages via my gmail account.

Exchanging a phone does. Needed my phone replaced and just found this out. Bummer. Just makes my transition to my .me account that much quicker. Good riddance Google.

Seriously. I just ended my Android experiment (good riddance Google), and found I couldn't push my Gmail onto my new iPhone (now REALLY good riddance Google).

VERY VERY annoyed by this latest development.

I still have two of my gmail accounts pushing via exchange but I had to add a third email today for work and there is no way to make it push for me. The best I can do is have it fetch every 15 minutes. Not ideal and definately will be a dealbreaker to continue to use gmail when I get a new device later this year.

I tried to configure it as "gmail" from the options (fetch), exchange (doesn't work following the late jan deadline), and other using imap settings (fetch)

I tried and HATED the gmail app for iphone/ipad. Very sub-par compared to the native app & fetch is BS in this day and age.

This is an annoying development. I was using Activesync Gmail on a grandfathered IPhone 5. Tis weekend the device was replaced under warranty. The replacement device doesn't support activesync with gmail (or rather google wont offer activesync support for gmail on my new device).

I don't view icloud as a substitute for 2 reasons:
1) limited storage of 5gb
2) lack to a quality webmail interface for accessing from PCs and other devices.

I'm leaning to outlook.com mail instead.

I have a feeling Micrsoft is going to be the winner from Google abandoning its iOS customers.

The Mailbox app just removed their reservation system if you're looking for an alternative to the Gmail app.

I went with Outlook.com too. Of course, it doesn't have IMAP but its EAS is top notch.

Oh, Microsoft is supposed to be adding IMAP in the near future. And my Mac's copy of Mail tries to set up Outlook.com as IMAP. It times out while testing "imap.live.com", so I guess IMAP is not quit ready yet.
