anybody else out there not buying the new MBP just because of the reflection issue?

Yep. Went to my local Apple store over the weekend to check out the new 'books. They were worse than I imagined, worse than I remember my day 1 blackbook being before I sold it in early '07.

I noticed, too, that all of the 17" MacBooks Pro on display had the glossy screen option. It seems Apple is trying to make casual visitors forget that there is or ever was a matte option.

Apple is really playing with fire here, in terms of their pro customer base.

It's clearly possible to take spiffy packaging too far, to the point where it becomes a usability deal-breaker. Glossy screens on the pro gear are a deal-breaker.

Gone are the days when Photoshop was faster or more featureful on a Mac compared to Windows. Fortunately, I'm happy enough with my Santa Rosa MBP for now. Maybe Apple will wise up next year so I don't have to start researching non-Apple laptops when this one's approaching depreciation.

:p

yes, it is the glass that is the problem not so much so that it's glossy.

Glassy is the issue as it causes the reflections. The old glossy screen same one on the macbook air now does have some reflections but not on the same level as the glassy screen.

Very much so you are correct. I got one of the Apple guys to put the 17in glossy next to the new MBP glass and there was a considerable difference and not just the glare but on a black screen I could make some detail in my reflection on the 17in but on the new one I could make out every ugly detail of my mug on that thing. (I never said I was pretty)

This issue is sort of a blessing in disguise for me. Whereas I would have ran out and blown two grand on one of these puppies already because it's otherwise such a sexy machine and the unibody almost made me drool on and short out my current MBP, due to the glassiness I can wait and keep using my MBP Classic, which is still of course a respectable machine. I'll save some €€ plus I already have a mirror in the bathroom.

Cute kitty Blue Velvet! I think Apple's competition could make a funny commercial by having a dog bark at itself in the reflection of a new MB.

Hey, btw do ya think this could have been Apple's strategy to attract new users while helping to minimize the number of existing MB owners flooding the preowned market with MBP Classic machine bargains? Think about it. In my case, I know that eventually I will buy a new MBP. In the meantime, one less MBP Classic is on eBay.

That's funny. That would be a lot better than their lame attempts to rival the terrific Mac ads.

Bring back matte!

Does this mean the previous gen MBP with glossy screen is less reflective than the newer model?

I just ordered a new glassy MBP... Tried to hang in their with you matte guys, but in the end was too weak. The unibody. Must...have, must......have. Shiny, sturdy. Help!
