Would there be a synced audio recording feature down the road? A very few apps have this but none have really nailed this feature. As a programmer myself, I can see this being quite complex and challenging (but not impossible). If this could be implemented, I wouldn't mind spending $10+.

It won't have audio recording any time soon, mainly because the current priorities are
  1. Auto advance and return
  2. Image annotation
  3. Overall experience (A new version with speed improvement will be uploaded soon after the app is released)
Audio recording will be challenging because embedding audio into PDF files is hard (if you want to export your notes to PDFs) and not many PDF viewers support audio playback. Also, it would make notebook files size huge. Not very nice if you want to email notebooks. I might add audio recording if I can come up with a simple and elegant solution.

I have been testing note taking with the iPad for a while and I find writing with the finger... dumb (not to mention that we are custom to write with a pen(cil), but well). The use of a zoom because our fingers are thick is imho counter productive to fast hand-writing. So I ask you why is there not a possibility of using a thin, I mean thin like a ball-pen, stylus to write on the iPad screen ? Is the touch panel not that sensitive ? Which is (as a developer) your instance, findings on this topic. (I wanted an iPad to replace a paper notebook... not possible, so far).
Edit: I'm getting an iPad 2 (I sold my iPad last month)... somewhere next month when it hopefully ships... and I'm willing to give the note-taking applications one more try (in the mean time I got a nice paper notebook).

I am not the developer of this fine looking note taker app, but....

A thin writing stylus for the iPad isn't likely to happen for either current generation. If it were possible, by now, either one of the many available capacitive touch styli (boxwave, targus, alupen, etc.) would have had a pointy one or an app developer would have worked some magic. All these people writing apps with zoom features or making a stylus with a fat tip are not doing so because they think that is the best user interface possible....they would make thin tip if they could.

My only guess is the iPad's screen, though precise, is tuned/meant to be used with the human finger...something that isn't pointy. Having the screen work with pointy objects likely requires a less optimized for fingers or additional tech, and with Steve Jobs saying if you need a stylus you are doing it wrong (to competitors) then it seems doubtful there will be a change, but you never know. If a change comes, it will be in a future iPad.

Tablet PCs of the last decade have had active and passive digitizers (vs the iPad's capacitive screen). These digitizers allowed for a thin tipped stylus, but also required horsepower to interpret those sensitive touches. And because they were tuned to interpret the tip of the plastic (or special) stylus, they were not tuned to be used with your finger.

I think they tech will be there for layered digitizers to get both worlds, but it isn't there with any manufacturer that I know of.

If you just want digital note take look to something else, or even a livescribe and have it both on paper and digital. Or "make do" with the iPad and zooming in.

That is because the iPad screen is primarily designed for fingers. Apple has filed a patent in 2008 for thin (iPad) stylus, so it is possible but no one has done it yet. If you need better accuracy, you may try the Dagi stylus.

Any update? The file corruption issue in UPad is killing me right now. It seems to happen to my longer docs so I'm writing in many small docs now.

I agree that you need to have the core functionality working before adding new features and I was just asking if you're thinking of doing that at some point in the future. I'm glad to know that you're considering it.

To my knowledge, other developers are approaching this issue by treating the audio and notes differently when it comes to exporting. The ones that have this feature keep the scope of this only within the application and export the files in two different format rather than embedding the audio to the PDF. (I believe this is only possible by using flash which obviously isn't supported by iOS)

Still waiting for it to be approved. I hope it will be up this week if nothing goes wrong.

Yes, I have tried some of them. But I think having the option to include the audio when exporting notes is a must. Exporting the audio separately is not ideal...

Hi Steven
Just watched the demo and I'm really impressed with the smoothness and how responsive the app is. Really looking forward to this being released! I know you can email the notes, looks like an embedded image, can the notes be exported and emailed as a PDF attachment? Or an image attachment?

Hope the review process goes well and quick for you.

Take care :)

The one shown in the video demo was actually a PDF attachment ;) The mails application will show the image preview if the PDF is a single page document.

Just gave it it's first test drive, very very smooth writing! Really like the simple fact that the pen icon shows you what color and thickness it is.

A few of the planned enhancements and it's all there,

I'm a winner!!! :) I'm gonna give it a try. This will actually be my first hand written notes app. I've been considering noteshelf and notes+ but this one looks pretty solid and I might be able to save some money!!

Oh and if I like it i'll rate it for ya too. I rarely write ratings (maybe done it 7 times out of several hundred apps over 2.8 years. )

I just had a few minutes to play around with the app but from what i've seen so far I may have a new note app for my first home page. Writing seems to be very smooth and the interface is very clean, and very intuitive. I'll post a review on the app store once I've had a chance to play with it a bit more.

Job well done.

Copy & email

Will we able to copy text?. Also, it would be nice if we could e-mail notes. So far This seems like a smoothe program.

i've been looking for a note-taking app for uni for a while now, however browsing at the options, none seem so great to replace the pen and paper so far.
i've been trying annotation for pdf readings, and the [only] main advantage is to not waste paper. i have tried upad, although it feels laggy and interface isnt so great.

it seems that iannotate is the most popular currently, and goodread in 2nd. however im not looking to waste my money to try these out.
this app looks like it has potential, can anyone compare this to iannotate and goodread?

First impressions after 10 minutes use.

The palm rest is giving me a slight problem. Because it can be moved up and down on any part of the grey area, not just at the top edge, for instance, my hand is moving it when I write. This is very distracting and annoying. Also, to turn palm rest on and off, you have to go through three presses. Personally, I would rather have the on/off button on the main menu bar. The other issue is with moving through pages. There's a delay while the content redraws at high resolution.

Very impressed with the clean, stripped down appearance and very easy to use.

But that also means that you'd have to use a proprietary file format which isn't ideal also, since you can't use Adobe's API for PDF with embedded audio. Wouldn't that be the only choice if one was to implement the functionality?
