The only announcement I could find is Dell's XPS 13 2-in-1, and they've announced neither pricing nor availability. Probably won't ship for a while. Until then, vaporware.

These new MacBooks? Their prices are known. And they ship within one business day.

Wake me up when someone can ship a 10nm Intel laptop at all, much less in volume.

Here are four laptops with Ice Lake that have been announced with Acer, HP, Dell and Lenovo.

Announcements of Ice Lake release in 2019 by Intel at CES and during an earnings call. During the earning call the CEO, Swan, said, "We remain on track to have volume client systems on shelves for the holiday selling season."

Despite Intels constant delays in the past I'd be very surprised if they don't start delivering mobile 10nm processors this year. Another delay would be disastrous. With the improvements that Ice Lake will bring in things like wifi, graphics and hopefully battery life, it's hard to imagine Apple not upgrading the Air and Pro along with their competitors this year.

Do you think Apple will update the Air/Pro 3-4 months down the line again? Wouldnt this be unprecedented and kinda a slap to the face to customers who will buy the latest models now?

Aaaaaand the article provides zero details on any of those, so I’m not sure why you would link it.

They also shipped Cannon Lake last year.

The key part is in volume. I wouldn’t be surprised if they can do it, but my guess is Apple felt once burnt (or really, severe times burnt these past few years), twice shy.

If those laptops you’ve listed only ever ship a few hundred thousand units, there will be no mention whatsoever in the press.

But if Apple has gone with Ice Lake already and they wouldn’t be able to ship several million MacBooks in the holiday quarter as a result, you can bet there’ll be a huge story, and part of the blame will be laid on Apple.

So they’re not gonna do that.

Another delay would be disastrous. With the improvements that Ice Lake will bring in things like wifi, graphics and hopefully battery life, it's hard to imagine Apple not upgrading the Air and Pro along with their competitors this year.

I’d love to live in a world where we could have Sunny Cove today, but I don’t.

Are you expecting Apple to make another upgrade in November? That seems unlikely to me.

There is precedent. The Intel iMac shipped just three months after the iMac G5 with iSight.

But… unlikely.

That’s only your opinion. I have an iPad Pro and it’s amazing, I can’t imagine myself going back to TouchID on an iPad. The iPhone though I’m not sure, maybe the best of both worlds? TouchID and FaceID. Anyway, an iMac with FaceID would be amazing.

Ok- I’ll agree with you there. It is much better on the iPad Pro than it is on the XS Max.

I've not used a Touch Bar MacBook Pro yet but I read a lot about the lack of a physical Esc key. Must admit, I don't recall ever using my physical Esc key - in what scenarios is it used?

It would be unusual, for sure, but maybe there’s a reason why it would happen:

Ming Che Kuo said recently that Apple will be replacing the keyboards in all MacBooks with a new model that’s cheaper to produce, has more key travel, and less prone to errors than the current butterfly keyboard. Kuo predicted the Air would be the first Mac to get this new keyboard and would come out later in the fall, with a spec bump.

It’s possible that Apple still plans to do this but wasn’t able to get these machines ready in time for the back to school period, so they released what they could have ready in time, with a price cut.

in Computer sales you can't really worry about "slapping" your customers on the face when you refresh / upgrade internals. as a consumer, we all know that anyday could see a new release of products that are faster or better than the ones before.

if you're buying any computer. Whether it's Apple, Dell, Acer, etc. you have to expect that a refresh of internals can happen almost anytime. Apple is actually a bit of an anomoly in this industry as their previous "once year" refreshed tended to leave products on shelves for far longer than their "current" timeframe.

how many times on these forums do you see people claiming Apple is still selling "old" parts in their computers. If Apple is speeding up refreshing to a more frequent cycle of 6 or so months on internal upgrades, this is a good thing to ensure that the current available products are up to date for new buyers and new buyers aren't buying 1+ year old tech

HOWEVER. Is this a new trend for Apple or just an aberration and they have no future plans for more frequent updates? I dunno. Only Tim Cook can probably answer what their plans are.

I beg to disagree. I EE members of my team with touch are macs and none of them use them for anything useful that the function keys didn't already do
“People”... When are MacRumors users going to realize that the echo chamber on this forum isn’t necessarily what mainstream Apple customers think?

The TouchBar is a great idea whose potential hasn’t been entirely realized. Now that every MacBookPro has it and it’s been added to every other Mac through Sidecar on Catalina, I can see developers taking deeper advantage of the TouchBar.

I’m guessing the 99 cent FaceTime cameras they put in these things suck so badly that FaceID wouldn’t work.
Which is why I think they will redesign the iMac in few years with smaller bezels, FaceID cameras and like 5x the price! One can dream.

For me in Linux shell's that I administer. I do all my text editing within Bash via VIM. "ESC" is absolutely crucial to function changing between entry and command parsing.

removal of a physical esc key is a significant change to my touch typing when I am working within shells

Another thing about the touch bar - It's been around for four years now - has it improved in any appreciable way? (I ask this as a non-touch-bar user)

No. Still nothing more than a frippery at best, and an active distraction at worst.

Also wanted to mention that this is the least expensive MacBook Pro ever released at $1,299USD in 2019. The closest is the 13.3-inch June 2012 release, which was $1,199 at the time but adjusted for inflation is ~$1,335.

That may be the case, however considering the 2012's base configuration included a 2.5 GHz i5, 4GB RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, it was a lot more of an attractive and useful offering at the time. Albeit, slow storage, but people didn't care as much at the time. 500GB for a primary drive is plenty.

I have and still use that machine (upgraded with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM) today. The optical drive has long been replaced with a 1TB HDD, soon to be an SSD. Sadly, stock dual internal drives is something that has never been seen as an option for a newer MacBook (that I am aware of). Obviously very well worth the price at the time, and still getting macOS Catalina.
